4-H Week Wrap-up

By Mary Loftis

Extension Assistant

Last week was Burt County 4-H Week and several of our 4-H Clubs were spreading a little 4-H green as they promoted the good word of 4-H through various mediums and activities.

The Argo 4-H Club had their organizational meeting last Sunday. They voted to donate a scoop and push broom to the Burt County Fair Foundation Fundraiser and then went down the street and chipped out space on a dirty snow and ice pile to create a 4-H promotion sign.

The Logan Valley Clovers 4-H Club got together and created a tied fleece blanket to donate to the Fair Foundation Fundraiser as part of their 4-H week activities. They also had 18 of their 4-H club members prepare a meal for their families and then served 47 family members! Their meal consisted of Salisbury steak, mashed potatoes, steamed broccoli, rolls and hot fudge sundaes. Yum! The group also decorated the windows of the Lyons Public Library and had 4-H projects on display in their display cases.

The Flying Needles were busy as usual as they mixed and baked apple and banana muffins to deliver to the Golden Living Center, the Methodist Church coffee hour and the Extension Office. They were delicious! They also donated a chocolate cake baked by Dorothy Fleischman to the Fair Foundation fundraiser.

Not to show favoritism, Grandma Dorothy Fleischman also made a pie for the Lucky 13 4-H Club to contribute to the fundraiser.

The Clover Stars 4-H Club got together Monday and Tuesday after school to mix up and bake sugar cookies…with green sprinkles of course! It was quite interesting having 9 batches of cookies being mixed at the same time by five to 16 year olds. On baking day they learned the value of a good cookie scoop in making uniform sized cookies as well as making sure the cookies had enough space to grow…otherwise they “kissed!” One seasoned 4-H member explained that using a cookie scoop is the secret to a purple ribbon at the fair!  Over 300 cookies were baked as part of the group process, or at home by members who could not attend the baking day. The 4-H club members delivered these cookies to their classes at school, the Extension office, Tekamah City Office, and their grateful families. Thanks to the creativity of Heidi and Greta Lindberg the Clover Stars 4-H Club also donated a decorative flag holder and 6 creative 4-H and county fair flags to display to the silent auction.

The Burt’s Best 4-H Club donated a bucket of show supplies to the fair fundraiser to show their support of the event.

It seemed totally appropriate to finish Burt County 4-H Week, which also coincided with National FFA Week with the Burt County Fair Foundation Fundraiser Event on Saturday evening at the Tekamah Auditorium. The event was a great success with great food, fun and fundraising! Burt County 4-H & FFA members got the chance to serve as waiters for the five reserved tables as a special opportunity this year.

It was a great Burt County 4-H Week, and the best thing about it was having several new families come into the extension office to get information on 4-H! That’s what 4-H Week is ALL about!

4-H On-line Enrollment – Don’t Put It OFF!

The Nebraska 4-H program has gone to on-line enrollment for all 4-H members. This will make things better for some and worse for others. It is not a complicated process, but it does take a computer with internet service. A step by step instruction sheet is available on the www.burt.unl.edu website under the “Burt County 4-H” header and click on: Online Enrollment. A 4-H project list is also there to help you plan your project enrollment.

If computer skills and/or internet availability are a problem we welcome any 4-H members and their families to come in the extension office and use our computers to get this job done. Just call Nebraska Extension in Burt County at 402-374-2929 if you want to come in and enroll. I’m sure most of our 4-H members will find this a breeze. If you have problems, please call for help.

The initial enrollment deadline is May 1, 2015; however, changes to your enrollment account may be made until June 1st.  After June 1stne.4honline.com WILL NOT accept changes to project lists, family info, etc.  If you have questions please contact the Burt County Extension Office at 402-374-2929 or email: swimer2@unl.edu, or nick.bohannon1@gmail.com.

4-H Week Greens Up The Horizon

Burt County 4-H Week is March 2-8 and it will start off with a bang on Sunday, March 2 with the 4-H Achievement Celebration/Kickoff afternoon of fun. The family fun will begin at 3:00 p.m. at the Tekamah Auditorium with a variety of fun activities including nerf kickball and bingo.

At 4:00 we’ll shift gears to recognize our 4-H award winners and present pins to our 1, 5 and 10 year 4-H members and our senior 4-H’ers. In addition we will honor our 4-H leaders who have served 2, 5, 10 and 15 years.

Then we’ll shift into eating mode with pizza and pop followed by a movie with popcorn.

We’ll make sure everyone heads home in time for the Oscars.

Make sure you and your family are signed up for the fun so we know how many to plan for. Call the UNL Extension Office by Friday noon at 402-374-2929 to say you can make it. And make sure you invite anyone who might want to become a 4-H member. It’s a kickoff event, but could also show someone new what there is to do and win in 4-H also.

With 4-H Week on the horizon I want to remind all our 4-H Clubs to make plans to celebrate it with a 4-H store display for the week. Remember the Burt County 4-H Council is offering $50 for each club making a display in a store window. Please send me a picture of your window display so you can show your display and we can promote them during the fair too! You can email them to me at mloftis2@unl.edu

4-H members are also reminded to plan some type of promotion in school for 4-H Week. Make arrangements to visit elementary school classrooms and tell them about 4-H, what you learn, what you do, friends, etc. Also, Thursday, March 6 is “Wear your 4-H t-shirt to School Day!” If you can’t find yours or need a new one for the fair we have them in the Extension Office of course!

Keep in mind the 4-H Snow and Snowless Sculpture Contest…as it’s snowing as I write, hopefully we’ll have a few entries in the Snow categories…otherwise, you’ll just have to get more creative for the snowless ones! Remember to send a picture of you with your creation to me at mloftis2@unl.edu or to the UNL Extension Office at 111 N. 13th Street, Suite #6, Tekamah, NE 68061 by April 1.

East Oaks 4-H Pancake Feed

Although the East Oaks Pancake Feed isn’t “officially” part of 4-H Week, it’s an annual tradition I know the club members look forward to each year. Mark Sunday, March 16 on your calendars and make plans to eat breakfast or lunch with the East Oaks 4-H Club at the Vet’s Building in Oakland from 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. It’s always a great time to see the 4-H members in action!
