Two From Burt County to Receive Good Neighbor Award


ASKARBEN Foundation and the Omaha World-Herald have announced the 73rd annual Good Neighbor Award recipients. The Good Neighbor awards recognize Nebraskans who have performed unselfish acts of kindness.  Receiving the award this year are 13 individuals and groups representing eight Nebraska counties. Award winners will be recognized at their local county fair with a certificate and a Good Neighbor lapel pin.

Burt County

Jeannine Batie Nelsen, Lyons, NE

At her own expense, Jeannine created 25 full size personalized quilts for the veterans who graduated from Lexington and St. Ann’s 1966 class. The surprise quilts were distributed at the 50-year reunion. Jeannine personally delivered to those who were unable to attend the reunion.

Mary Alice Pearson, Oakland, NE

Mary Alice Pearson is an active hospice volunteer who works countless hours helping those in need at a very difficult time. She spends hours visiting nursing home residents.  Mary Alice volunteers at the Burt County Fair, is involved with the school mentoring program, drives people to church, doctor appointments, and wherever they need a ride.

Nebraska Pioneer and Heritage Applications Now Available


AKSARBEN Foundation is currently accepting applications for the annual Nebraska Pioneer and Heritage Farm Awards.  Sponsored by AKSARBEN Foundation and Nebraska Farm Bureau, the program honors farm families in Nebraska whose land has been owned by members of the same family for 100 years (Pioneer) and 150 years (Heritage). To date, more than 9,000 families in all 93 Nebraska counties have been honored at their respective county fairs.  Each farm honoree receives one engraved plaque and one gatepost marker as permanent recognition of their milestone. 

Application details must be verified by the county fair board in which the land is located prior to submission to AKSARBEN Foundation.  The 2017 Nebraska Farm Award applications are due to county fair boards no later than April 21, 2017.  Application forms can be obtained:

AKSARBEN Foundation is currently accepting nominations for the Good Neighbor Award, an annual award exemplifying the organization’s mission of giving back to the community and moving forward Heartland prosperity.

Sponsored by AKSARBEN Foundation and the Omaha World-Herald, the program recognizes individuals or groups nominated by friends or neighbors for performing unselfish acts of kindness without the expectation of compensation or personal gain of any kind.  In the last four years, more than 150 individuals or groups have received this recognition.  Commemorative certificates and lapel pins are awarded at the honorees’ summer county fair.

Completed nominations are accepted from organizations or individuals throughout Nebraska and western Iowa and are due to AKSARBEN Foundation by May 2, 2016.  Nomination forms can be obtained:
