Another Scam, Be Alert!

It was recently reported the lifeline/grocery coupon scam is making the rounds again.
A lady in Red Cloud, NE received several calls and finally gave in to the pressure. The caller was offering a lifeline and $3000 worth of grocery coupons. She gave them her name and bank account number.
After she thought it over she called them back and was told they had already processed her first month’s payment but would then cancel. She called the bank and police department and asked for the number of the BBB to report there also.
It’s hard to say “No” but if you didn’t call them, you don’t have to be polite or buy anything from them or even listen to their pitch. When they keep “sweetening” the deal after you first say “no” it should be another sign to hang up. When they ask for your bank or credit card account number that’s your final red flag and you should say you changed your mind and hang up. If they call again…HANG UP!
If you do give in and give your account number, don’t be afraid to admit you might have made a mistake. Be proactive before they can steal your identity and make lots of purchases you may end up paying for. Call your bank or the credit card customer service number on the back of your credit card to explain the situation. They will help protect you from any further charges and will help you change your account or issue a new credit card number.
Also call the Senior Health Insurance Information Program at 1-800-234-7119 or your local SHIIP volunteer to report the incident so alerts may be shared to help protect others.
