Merle J. Schwarten, 86, of Wakefield NE


Merle J. Schwarten, 86, of Wakefield, Nebraska died on Friday, August 14, 2015 at the Wisner Care Center in Wisner, NE. Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, August 18, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at Salem Lutheran Church in Wakefield; Pastor Barbara Hansen will be officiating. The visitation will be held on Monday from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m, with a brief prayer service at 7:00, at the Bressler – Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home in Wakefield. Burial with military honors will be in the Wakefield Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the family for future designation.

Merle was born on August 6, 1929 in Wakefield, Nebraska, the son of Charles and Anna (Gradert) Schwarten. He attended Wakefield High School, graduating in 1947. On August 17, 1951, he was united in marriage to Lois Stipp at Papillion, NE. In 1951, Merle entered the United States Army serving during the Korean War. Merle and Lois lived in Wakefield where Merle owned and operated a gas station and a tank wagon service, delivering fuel to farmers. He later drove school bus, worked at CVA, Salmon Well, helped many farmers, and was the church custodian. On September 13, 1996, Lois passed away. On November 14, 1998, he was united in marriage to Mae (Salmon) Pearson.

Merle was an avid fisherman, hunter, bowler, loved to play baseball in his younger years and watch Legion baseball. He enjoyed baking and was known to have the best rye bread in town. He enjoyed traveling, watching Husker volleyball and football, spending time with family and friends, visiting and playing cards. He was a member of the American Legion Anton Bokemper Post #81, a lifelong member of Salem Lutheran Church, and an active community member.

He is survived by his wife Mae of Wakefield, sons, Randy (Christine) Still of Denver CO, Doug Schwarten of Lincoln, NE, and a daughter Kathy (Randy) Bird of Wayne, NE, seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He is also survived by a daughter-in-law, Vickie (Mike) Loofe of Wakefield and sister-in-law Betty Schwarten of Wakefield.

Merle was preceded in death by his parents, wife Lois, son Brad Schwarten, granddaughter Megan Schwarten, and his brother Weldon Schwarten.

Sandra was born August 4, 1946 in Elkton, MD to Marshal and Pauline (Miller) Armstrong. She married Lewis Barlow on May 22, 1965 in Elkton, MA. The couple had one daughter, Carmen, and were married for 25 years before Lewis passed away in 1988. Sandra worked as a waitress, nurse’s assistant, and as a lead person at Michael’s Foods. She moved to Pierce in 2010. Sandra enjoyed bingo, word searches, and spending time with her family. She is survived by her daughter; Carmen (Gene) Wriedt of Norfolk, NE, grandson; Doug Phipps and his fiancé Jenny Holloway of Norfolk, NE, granddaughter; Crystal (Joseph II) Spell of Norfolk, NE, great grandchildren; Ryder Phipps, Joseph Spell III, Louella Spell, Autumn Holloway, Leanna Holloway and Landon Holloway.

Sandra was preceded in death by her parents, husband; Lewis, and brothers; Marshal Armstrong, Jr., and Buster Armstrong.

Elaine Marie Ida (Hitz) Holm, 93, of Wakefield, Nebraska passed away Wednesday, July 15, 2015 at the Wakefield Health Care Center in Wakefield. Elaine was born on October 4, 1921 to Erie and Ella (Pittack) Hitz in Pierce, NE. She was baptized on October 16, 1921 and confirmed in her faith on Palm Sunday 1934 at St. John’ s Lutheran Church in Pierce, NE, by Pastor H. A. Hilpert. Elaine moved with her parents to Wakefield in November 1936 and graduated from Wakefield High School in 1939. On November 16, 1942 she was united in marriage to Harold Holm at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wakefield by Pastor W. A. Gerdes.

Elaine was active in St. John’s Lutheran Church, helping with the Ladies Aid, Ruth’s Bible Study, Lutheran Women’s Missionary League and a Bible School Helper. She was also involved with Club 16, the V.F.W. Auxiliary, Rural Letter Carrier’s Auxiliary. In her spare time Elaine enjoyed quilting, crocheting, sewing and crafts. Elaine is survived by her daughter, Cheryl (Dennis) Evans of Bennington, NE; son, Charles (Cecil) Holm of Depoe Bay, OR; four grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

Elaine is preceded in death by her parents, Erie and Ella Hitz; husband, Harold Holm and a brother, Alfred Hitz.

Shad was born on January 9, 1980 in Pender, NE, the son of Vern and LeAnn (Salmon) Miner. He attended Wakefield High School, graduating in 1998. On May 2, 2009, Shad was united in marriage to Tara McKay at Salem Lutheran Church in Wakefield. To this union one son, Weston, was born. Shad was currently employed with Michael Foods in Wakefield as a warehouse supervisor. He enjoyed many things in his life including golf, fishing and hunting. He was an avid Nebraska Cornhusker and Indianapolis Colts fan. Most of all he enjoyed the time he spent with his family and friends and playing with his son Weston.

He is survived by his wife Tara and son Weston of Wakefield, his mother LeAnn Miner, sister Shanda (John) Geiser and brother Brady Miner, grandparents Dean and Phyllis Salmon, his aunt and uncle Bennett and Kathy Salmon all of Wakefield, NE, and many nieces . nephews and cousins.

Shad was preceded in death by his father Vern and his paternal grandparents Robert and Betty Miner.
