Kats’ Korner: The Stormy Spring

This has been a spring to remember. Not fondly though.

Many people have lost their homes, possessions and jobs due to the wrath of Mother Nature.

We know tornadoes and flooding happens. We endured a flood in 2011 that did much destruction.

Tornadoes happen all over the country. Until they hit close to home, I doubt many give people give them too much thought.

The day Craig, Uehling, Blair and other areas were hit with severe weather was a memorable day as well.

It was the first bad storm in the area. My mom and I were sitting at my house, worried about what may be coming our way. It did storm hard, pounding rain and wind, but small hail here. The only damage in Oakland was a few trees down in the park and some branches elsewhere in town. We were lucky. As the storm passed, it intensified and did damage in the other areas I mentioned.

I have to admit, I was scared. The clouds looked very ominous, dark and green. I was glad mom was here.

Jeff works at Craig Cattle Company and was caught in the storm in Craig driving home. He had to stop because he couldn’t see in the pouring rain. I am just grateful he was able to get home safely.

I kept having a feeling that day. I thought we were going to be in for a miserable spring. I listen a great deal to the weather and have learned a bit about fronts. When the front was just to the north of us last week, storm predictions started occurring. What I learned is storms erupt along fronts. I am sure that is common knowledge, but I had never paid attention before. I watched the radar throughout the day. I started paying more attention as the storm developed by Stanton. It was getting larger and larger as time went on. It was quite alarming. As it began to take shape, one could tell, this was not going to be good.

It was so hard to believe that Pilger was hit by twin tornadoes! I was in shock. It wasn’t just Pilger that was hit. The tornadoes kept going, destroying homes, farms, anything in its path, all the way to Wakefield!

The pictures were shocking. I felt so guilty for being safe. I knew if the front had been further south, maybe Oakland or any other community, would have been destroyed.

Losing everything in the blink of an eye would have to be so upsetting! I just can’t imagine!

It is wonderful to see everyone stepping up and assisting all of those in need! Nebraskans are so loyal and caring about their neighbors. My prayers have been and will continue to be with all of the victims of the storms. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Life is precious, and can change, or be lost in a heartbeat.

We have all seen that in the last couple of weeks.

Isn’t the spring weather we are having wonderful? I have enjoyed it as much as I can. I love to be outside, walking and soaking up the sun.

We took a drive this past Sunday, enjoying the beautiful day. We drove throughout the lovely countryside of Burt County.

We especially enjoy Summit Lake. We camp and fish there as much as possible during the summer.

There was still some ice in the lake, enough to allow for safe ice fishing. There were also hundreds of Canadian geese on the lake. What a wonderful site! I have been sharing the pictures I took so my readers may also enjoy the beauty of Summit Lake.

Spring is just around the corner. But, winter could still give us a last blast or two to remind us where we live.

There is no place like Nebraska!

I found out the most exciting news Monday. We are going to be grandparents again! We are so excited!

Our daughter Whitney and her fiancé Tri Tran are expecting their first child in November.

I already have started crocheting a baby blanket. Once we know if it is a girl or a boy, I am going to make a bigger, crib size blanket with blue or pink yarn. I am also going to try my hand at making baby booties and a hat. I haven’t crocheted those before, so this will be a challenge.

I plan on shopping until I drop for baby things! It is an exciting time at our house!

Today is Girl Scout Day. The Girl Scouts were founded on this day in 1912. I was a Girl Scout. I was also a Brownie.

I earned several badges and thoroughly loved it. It was a very educational experience that I believe every young girl should have.

I believe being in the Girl Scouts taught me many things and helped me become a better adult.

Who doesn’t love Girl Scout Cookies? Show your support and purchase cookies to assist the Girl Scout organization in teaching the young girls of this country the necessities to assist them in approaching adulthood.

And, your taste buds will be happy!

Until next time, hold each other close. Never take life for granted, or your friends. Both are precious and irreplaceable.

Kat’s Korner: It is a Beautiful Day!

I am writing this while enjoying the sunshine streaming in through the windows. It is so nice to have a sunny day with the temperature above freezing, or at least above zero!

I have spent most of this day catching up on house cleaning and laundry. I have fallen behind lately.

As like many of you, I haven’t felt too well lately. I had a touch of the flu. I have also had a cold.

I feel much better today. I do believe the sunshine and warmth is helping.

We should all count our blessings though. The bitter cold days we have endured are nothing in comparison to what those in the south and east of us have had to deal with.

The snow and ice seem to be endless for them. I am hoping there is an end in sight for them as enough is enough!

Spring is just around the corner. I can’t wait to see green grass and flowers in bloom again!

I had to sign us up for health insurance the other day.

It took all day for me to do so. Not because it is a bad thing, as many people insist it is, but because I had many questions to ask and much research to do.

Negativity is very annoying to me. I find it shocking how people are so eager to see the bad in things while ignoring the good.

There isn’t one person that can positively say the Affordable Care Act is bad or a failure.

It is like anything else, only time will tell.

Instead of saying negative things, have faith that it will all work out for the best.

What is your favorite Spring/Summer outdoor activity?

I have several. I love to go for a walk. I enjoy walking in different areas when I can, taking in the views from all over the countryside.

We take our dog Tucker to the Logan during the summer. He loves jumping in and cooling off.

I also like to jog and walk in the park. Outside activity is fun and energizing!

What I enjoy the most is lounging on the deck or patio, sipping on tea, reading a book, or grilling and enjoying the evening with Jeff.

I am getting more anxious for warm, outdoor weather the more I write this!

I am going outside now to soak in some sun and get Vitamin D!

Until next time, enjoy the sunshine, and when all else fails, make your own sunshine! Smile!

Other than a very cold day or two, hasn’t January’s weather been wonderful?

It is so nice to go for a walk, or enjoy any outside activities when being inside is the norm for January.

As unpredictable as Nebraska weather is, who knows what is next? I am not one to look at a seven or ten day forecast, worry or dread, what a meteorologist has predicted.

I believe in taking it one day at a time.

Last year, it snowed on May 1st! Not a big snow, but still snow. One can never tell what the weather will bring.

When morning comes is the best time to determine if the weatherman is right or wrong.

Spring will be here before we know it. I am envisioning hot July days lounging in our pool!

Are you a blood donor?

January is National Blood Donor Month.

I have donated blood only one time. I was a senior in high school. The students, only those being of age to give blood, challenged the teachers. There wasn’t a prize involved. The goal was to see who had the most individuals donating blood, the students or the teachers.

Truthfully, I don’t remember who won the contest. It wasn’t about winning. It was about doing the right thing for those in need.

I felt horrible after I had given blood. I went home and slept for three hours! I sadly admit that I haven’t given blood since.

I try to convince myself to do so, that I will be fine. I know it is the right thing to do.

Maybe I will get it done this year.

The one resolution I made. I hope I accomplish it!

We went shopping the weekend after Christmas.

I was shocked to see summer clothes already! I know that is how the retail world works, but I want to buy sweaters!

I found a gorgeous one on a clearance rack. That is the kind of shopping I like! Sales, clearance, anything that isn’t full price!

I will be in the mood for summer clothes when it is summer!

I hope your New Year has had a great beginning.

I also hope the entire year, and all the years to come, find you happy and healthy.

Happy January! To me, it is the longest month of the year. If the weather continues on this path, I could change my mind.

God Bless you until we meet again!
