Humphrey Saint Francis Flyers Dominate Lyons-Decatur Northeast Cougars

By Clare Wiltse, Sports Contributor

Number one rated Humphrey Saint Francis came to town and showed the Cougars that they were worthy of their pre-season rating.   The Flyers pounded out a 64-6 win in the home opener.

After the Flyers opened the game with a scoring drive, the Cougars came back with a drive of their own.  With 8:26 left in the quarter Montana Riecken teamed up with Jon Christiansen for a 20 yard touchdown pass.  HSF would score three more times in the quarter to take a 30-6 lead.  Three second quarter scores put the visitors up 50-6 at the break.  A running clock speeded the second  half.
The HSF defense limited Northeast to  272 yards.  They had 186 yards rushing and 86 yards passing.

QB Montana Riecken headed the running game with 102 yards on  19 rushes.  Marcus Hegy gained 56 yards on 21 tries.  Jon Christiansen got 8 yards with 3 attempts. Benny Estrada ran 6 times and gained 20 yards.

The passing attack saw Montana completed five of seven passes with one interception.  Jon Christiansen hauled in three passes and gained 79 yards while scoring once.  Jayden Vetick caught two for 7 yards.

The defense was not able to stop the Flyer’s power running game as the secondary was forced to make many tackles.  Jon Christiansen topped the Cougars with thirteen tackles, 7 solo and 6 assisted.  Dustin Burgett had; 2 solo and 5 assisted while Montana Riecken had 3 solo and 3 assisted stops.  Linebacker Bren Shatto had 8 total tackles with 2 being solos.  He had 2 TFLs.  Marcus Hegy recorded 5 solo and 2 assisted tackles.  In the line, Jayden Vetick had 1 solo and 1 assisted and Tyler Kroger had 2 solo and 2 assisted with Tyler Hardeman and Cole Christoffersen each registering a solo tackle.

Cougars Season Comes to an End

By Clare Wiltse, Sports Contributor

The Northeast Cougars went into  the sub-district tournament having faced only two D-2 opponents during the season .  Playing a C-2 and D-1 schedule as a part of the EHC prepared them well for the play offs.  “We faced some tough teams during the year,” said Coach Lahm. “Three are going into district finals this week.  There aren’t many D-2 teams in this area, so we have to take on bigger schools with more depth, but it helps us a he season goes on.”

The Cougars took on (17-8) Wynot, a D-2 Top Ten team in the first round game at Ponca High School.  The contest went down to the final seconds with the Blue Devils winning by 51-48.  The coach said he was really proud of how the team played against the Blue Devils.

“We had the chance to take the lead in the minutes of the game,” said Lahm.  We blew two open lay ups when we were down by just one points.  After first the miss we played tough defense and got the ball back.  The second miss with 17 seconds left put us into a must foul position,”

Things did not look bright for the Cougars in the first half.  After falling behind 14-8 with eight minutes played,  Wynot’s lead expanded to ten points in the second quarter.  Then Chevy Henneman had a one man rally.  He personally had a 12-0 run and Northeast moved to a 20-18 lead.  Chevy had 17  of his game-high 25 points during the period.  Fifteen of his points came on three pointers.  His seven threes for the game ties a school record shared Jeremy Krumwiede and Jeremy Phillips.

Northeast took a 32-31 lead to the lockers after Wynot beat the buzzer for goal in the final seconds.

Northeast switched out of their usual man-to man defense to slow down the Blue Devils.  A 1-3-1 zone disrupted their shooting game as the teams battled in the second half. Wynot gained a six point advantage in the fourth quarter, but the Cougars did cut it to one point with the two chances to take  lead.

The season ends with Northeast sporting a 8-14 record.  Dylan Hardeman and Chevy Henneman are the two senior members of the squad.  Five sophomores and two juniors were in the rotation this year gaining experience to build on.

Lady Cougars End Season Tying School Win Record

Northeast went into the sub-districts with a number two seed and a tough team to take out in round one.  Bancroft-Rosalie despite their 10-13 record were going to be a tough draw.  The game went into overtime with Northeast on top 51-48.

The Lady Cougars started the game in a rare attempt of zone defense  to combat the double post offense of the Panthers.  “We did a good job of stopping their offense with the zone,” said Coach Rex Haskell.  “We did not do a good job of rebounding though. The ball kept going to them as they had a 33 to 8 led at half time.  The second half we went back to man and out rebounded them by three rebounds.”

After a tie at 10 in the first period, the Panthers gained a 22-17 lead at half.
The third period was a defensive period with Northeast gaining back one point.  Northeast took the lead in the fourth quarter and looked to have game won before misfortune hit in the closing seconds.

“Our full court press got us back into the game and we had a three point lead with seconds to play. B-R was in a forced to foul situation, but the foul was not called,” stated Coach Haskell.  The Panthers got as steal and a three and the game went into over time.

“It was a game of free throws,” commented the coach.  We made ours in the overtime and they didn’t.  Lexie and Abby came through with some big shots.  We needed them because Brianne and Darcey had fouled out.”

During the game LDNE shot 39 free shots and made 23 for 59% accuracy.  The Panthers had 22 tries and converted just 9 for 41%.

The Cougar had three in double figures. Darcey Simonsen topped the team with 14 point,; Lexie Bacon had 12, and Brianne Haskell had 11. Vicki Gatzemeyer had a game-high 26 points for B-R.

Perennial basketball power Wynot took on the Cougars in the sub-districts finals.  The (18-5) Blue Devils have been the State D-2 Champions for the last four years after taking runner-up in 2010.

“They pressed us the whole game full court.   It  took us a while to adapt to it and we did get some easy points.  You had to attack their press because if you ever picked the ball up they would trap you,” stated Coach Haskell.

Wynot jumped to a 17-8 first quarter lead.  Northeast cut the lead to five in the second quarter, but scores in the late period gave the Blue Devils a double digit lead at half.  Wynot came out with an 8-0 to start the second half and it was now a twenty point game,  Northeast was not able to mount any comeback until Wynot subbed out.   LDNE lost 65-49.

The Lady Cougars end their season with a school record tying fifteen wins.  They  lost nine times.

LDNE Boys and Girls Lose Tough Games in EHC

By Clare Wiltse

Sports Contributor

Being the smallest school in a sixteen team conference has its problems like trying to get respect from the big schools.  When the brackets are drawn up for the annual EHC basketball tournament, L-D’s wins over small schools does not rate too high.  They ended up with a 12th and 14th seed.

The two teams showed that they can play with the top teams as it took four quarters to decide the winners in the East Husker tournament.  The girls lost to third seeded Howells-Dodge 44-35.  The boys’ game went to the last minute before fifth seed, Twin River, assured themselves a 59-53 win.

Dodge-Howells got off to a great start on their home court.  After Haley Bacon opened the scoring the Jaguars made three of their next four shots.  The Cougar hung in their with Darcey Simonsen and Vanessa Peterson scoring.  An 8-2 run made for a 16 to 8 lead for  H-D at the quarter.

The next two quarter saw the Cougars outscore the Jaguars 21-16.  Lexie Bacon’s five points in the second quarter made it as four point game, 15-19.  After her sister, Haley, made a free throw it was down to three points.  Howells-Dodge rallied with eight points to take a 27-20 half  time lead.

The Cougars outscored H-D  by 7 to 2 when the second half resumed.  Darcey Simonsen ‘and Vanessa Peterson  scored goals before a trey by Tessie Collins pulled the Cougars to within two points with three minutes left in the quarter.  Vanessa Peterson added two free shots with 40 second left in the quarter.  A late free shot gave the Jaguars a 32-29 lead.

H-D created some breathing room early in the fourth quarter.  They made only two of ten shots, but used their height advantage to grab four offensive boards with two going for put backs.  Northeast struggled to put up points as six turnovers hampered their offense.  Darcey Simonsen got them going with six points, but the Jaguars relied on six free throws to claim a nine point win.

Darcey Simonsen and Vanessa Peterson led the Cougars with ten points each.  The Jags were led by Faith Molacek with 12 and Leah Grovijohn with 9.

“You cannot find any fault with the effort tonight,” said Coach Cronin.  The girls played their hearts out.”

With four senior starters back from the Tournament Runner-up team of 2013, Twin Rivers was a very creditable opponent with a 14-4 record.

The Titans opened in a zone defense as they tried to neutralize the offense of Cougar post man  Dakota Riecken.  They succeeded in slowing Riecken, but the Cougar guards made them change their minds.  Simpson and Henneman found openings to launch threes while Alex Brehmer and Marcus Hegy slashed the lane for deuces.  Twins River made 9 of 12 shots and led 19-17 at the end of one period.

Twin River went to man-to-man defense in the second quarter.  Brehmer tied the score with his patented floater from the lane.  Riecken used his spin move to answer a Titan score and keep L-D and TR even at 21.

Twin River used a 6-0 run to put a clamp on the lead.  Scores by Riecken, Hegy and Brehmer could not match the Titan’s output as the half ended with the Cougars trailing

34-26.

Northeast found themselves down by twelve points early in the half. After an opening basket by Riecken the Titans ran off six straight. Dakota scored two more times to bring the lead down to eight, 40-32.  Brehmer’s leaner with 4:15 completed a 6-0 run as the Cougars were back to a six point deficit. Another 6-0 run by Twin river was ended by a Taylor Fuston put back.  The Cougars trailed by ten with a quarter to play.

Northeast’s never say die attitude kept the Titans on edge during the fourth period.   An opening score on a put back by TR’s Crowell would be the Titans last basket.  Brehmer had two scores from the lane and Simpson found his mark from outside the arc.  Free throws kept Twin River alive as they made 5 of 8  to lead by ten.  The Cougars made their charge in the last four minutes as Hegy and Riecken were perfect from the line and Chevy Henneman hit the trifecta to make it a 54-50 game.

Forced to foul,  the Cougars gave back four points  before Henneman connected again with 18.2 to play.  A quick foul and two misses gave the Cougars life, but there was no more magic as Northeast could not connect on two three pointers and Twin River escaped with a 59-53 win.

Northeast had three in double figures.  Dakota Riecken had 14,  while Chevy Henneman and Alex Brehmer had 12.

“We re playing really well right now,” Said Coach Lahm   “Twin River has a nice team and we gave it  our all; we just came up a little bit short.  Lahm said he is  looking forward to playing Scribner  who has won only 2 of 9 games since Christmas.
