Northeast’s Cougars rolled to a 84-60 win in their first game of the 2015 season.  They jumped out to a 28-6 first period lead an stretched it to a 30 point lead by half time.  A couple of long scores by Jon Christiansen in the fourth quarter sewed up the win.

“There were a lot of positives that we got out of this game,” said Coach Dan Maresh.  “Montana Riecken did a great job of running the offense in his second start. He had 433 totals yards with 304 yards rushing and 129 yards passing.  He hit Jon Christiansen with two TD passes.  Jon had a good all-around game with 97 rushing yards.  Marcus Hegy got back into action after being out last season and rushed for 138 yards and scored three times, once on an interception.  I was pleased how the offensive line played.
They were very physical.”

The defense was led by their line backers, Bren Shatto and Marcus Hegy. Shatto had 8 solo and 2 assisted tackles, one sack and a TFL.  Hegy had 6 solo, 2 assisted tackles to go with an pick-six.  Tyler Hardeman topped the line with 3 solos.  Montana Riecken has an interception.  Jayden Vetick had two sacks in his four stops.  Benny Estrada had 3 solos and a sack.  Jon Christiansen recorded 4 solos. Tyler Kroger had 2 solos and teamed up with Nick Ronnfeldt on a TFL.

The coach was pleased how they D held their ground  game in check.  The Patriots only gained 150 rushing yards. “They gave us some problems with their passing scheme.  They have some tall athletes and our corners did well, but the third receiver gave us problems.”   Parkview had 5 TD passes and 388 receiving yards.

For the game LDNE had 550 yards on the ground.  Riecken carried 23 times for 304 yards and 6 touchdowns.  Marcus Hegy  had 138 yards and 2 TDs. Jon Christiansen carried 9 time for 97 yards. Jacob Whitaker and Benny Estrada each gained 5 yards while Dean Gibbs added 1.

Riecken passed five times with four completions and another 129 yards.  Christiansen caught 2 for 102 yards and 2 scores, while Whitaker had 1 for 21 yards and Vetick 1 for 6 yards.

The Cougars will have a home game this week.  They will take on pre-season number one rated Humphrey Saint Francis.  The Flyers will have a new tailback this season, but Coach Maresh expects them to continue their brand of power football.

Cougars Season Comes to an End

By Clare Wiltse, Sports Contributor

The Northeast Cougars went into  the sub-district tournament having faced only two D-2 opponents during the season .  Playing a C-2 and D-1 schedule as a part of the EHC prepared them well for the play offs.  “We faced some tough teams during the year,” said Coach Lahm. “Three are going into district finals this week.  There aren’t many D-2 teams in this area, so we have to take on bigger schools with more depth, but it helps us a he season goes on.”

The Cougars took on (17-8) Wynot, a D-2 Top Ten team in the first round game at Ponca High School.  The contest went down to the final seconds with the Blue Devils winning by 51-48.  The coach said he was really proud of how the team played against the Blue Devils.

“We had the chance to take the lead in the minutes of the game,” said Lahm.  We blew two open lay ups when we were down by just one points.  After first the miss we played tough defense and got the ball back.  The second miss with 17 seconds left put us into a must foul position,”

Things did not look bright for the Cougars in the first half.  After falling behind 14-8 with eight minutes played,  Wynot’s lead expanded to ten points in the second quarter.  Then Chevy Henneman had a one man rally.  He personally had a 12-0 run and Northeast moved to a 20-18 lead.  Chevy had 17  of his game-high 25 points during the period.  Fifteen of his points came on three pointers.  His seven threes for the game ties a school record shared Jeremy Krumwiede and Jeremy Phillips.

Northeast took a 32-31 lead to the lockers after Wynot beat the buzzer for goal in the final seconds.

Northeast switched out of their usual man-to man defense to slow down the Blue Devils.  A 1-3-1 zone disrupted their shooting game as the teams battled in the second half. Wynot gained a six point advantage in the fourth quarter, but the Cougars did cut it to one point with the two chances to take  lead.

The season ends with Northeast sporting a 8-14 record.  Dylan Hardeman and Chevy Henneman are the two senior members of the squad.  Five sophomores and two juniors were in the rotation this year gaining experience to build on.

Cougars Down Logan View in Overtime, End Losing Streak

By Clare Wiltse, Sports Contributor

The Northeast boys ended a five game losing streak with a 42-37 overtime win over Logan View in an EHC consolation bracket game.  They have a 7-10 record while Logan View falls to 3-16.

“It wasn’t pretty, but still was a win,” joked the coaches after the game.  Turnovers and missed free throws marred the offensive efforts by the team.  The defense adapted after the first period and held the Raiders to twenty-four points the rest of the game.

Dylan Hardeman got the Cougars off to a fast start with a trey and deuce as they moved to a 5-2 lead.  The Raiders’ zone trap defense limited Northeast to just one point while they rolled up eleven for a 13-6 first quarter lead. Eight turnovers limed the Northeast team to just four shots during the period.

“Their height advantage made it tough to run our offense,”  said Coach Lahm.  “Our guards are short and they could not see over the Logan View defenders.  We could not get the ball into the posts.”

The Cougars cut the deficit to just one point during the second quarter.  They got the ball into Alec Anderson, who made five of six free shots and added a goal, and Cole Christoffersen .  The Maroon turned the ball over just once.  The defense turned up the heat and LV made only two of eight shots.  A Raider basket at the buzzer gave them a three pint, 20-17 half time lead.

Logan View got the first four points of the second half.  Northeast turned to its backcourt to close in on the Raiders.  Chevy Henneman started the rally with a three pointer.  Dylan Hardeman  connected on a two pointer and followed with a shot from behind the arc.   Henneman second three of the period gave Northeast the lead with 3:50 left in the period.  The Raiders used a 6-2 run for 32-30 advantage at the quarter.

Alec Anderson tied the score in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter.  Logan View responded with three pointer.  Cole Christoffersen made it a one point game.  Northeast went back on top with an Anderson bucket with 4:40 to play.

The Cougars had chance to put the game away, but suffered six turnovers during the period.  Their free throw shooting was also suspect during crunch time.  Henneman  missed the front end of one-and-one and Christoffersen failed on a three-point play while going 0-4 during the period. Alec Anderson missed the first of two with 2:22 to play.  He made the second for a 37-35 lead.

“We have tried all sorts of  pressure free throw tactics in  practice,” stated Coach Lahm.  “They just are not converting over well to game time situations.  Luckily it did not hurt us tonight.”

The Cougar defense did rise to the occasion.  They kept the Raiders from scoring as they missed nine straight shots.  Logan View tried to pound the ball inside, but Christoffersen stood tall and denied them a good shot in the paint as he blocked a shot and got four defensive rebounds during the period.

Logan View managed to tie the score with 25 seconds left when Jacob Polk made a short jumper to send the game to overtime.

The overtime saw Northeast out score Logan View 5-0.  All the points came from the free throw line.  Montana Riecken gave the Cougars a 39-37 lead with two free shots.  Andersonadded one and Cole Christoffersen closed the scoring with a pair of makes.

The defense kept up their play as the Raiders went 0-6 from the field.  For the game Logan View made thirteen of forty-four shots.

Alec Anderson Led the Cougars with 14 points.  Dylan Hardeman  had 10n points before fouling out.  Cole Christoffersen had eight points and twelve rebounds and drew praise from the coach for stepping up his play.

The Cougars have home games against Wisner-Pilger and Logan View this week.

After the games Coach Lahm commented, “I have been extremely proud of the way our kids have responded to adversity in each and every game. The kids are still excited to be around each other, and they are working to get better every day. We must continue to learn and play the game the way it is meant to be played and part of that is learning how to maximize every possession on the offensive and defensive ends.”

Cougars Took on Fifth Ranked Flyers

The Northeast Cougars took on fifth ranked Humphrey Saint Francis in their second game of the season.  The young team was not up to the big challenge as the perennial power, Flyers, ripped them 70-14.

JJ Oltmer played a major role in the rout as he scored three times.  Last season he carried 35 time for 198 yards and score three TDs as the Cougars suffered their only district loss to the Flyers.  Last Friday, Oltmer needed only eight carries to gain 132 yards.

Northeast found themselves down 32-0 after one quarter.  HSF opened with two drives with 6 and 9 yard scoring runs. The Flyers’ Damien Baumgart returned a punt 43 yards and Oltmer broke loose for 31 yards.

The Cougars gave up three more scores before halftime.  Oltmer broke a forty yard run.  A Flyer interception gave Colton Engle a 42 yard return.  HSF’s final score came on a three yard run by Kyle Wemhoff.

After intermission the Cougars regrouped and  mounted a drive.  Chevy Henneman hooked up with Dylan Hardeman for a 30 yard scoring pass.  The duo clicked again on the PAT.

In the fourth quarter, Chevy Henneman took the ball over from three yards out.

Coach Maresh was pleased to have Chevy Henneman backing the lineup. The senior was cleared for play after missing the first game because of mononucleosis.  “Chevy played real well for us against such a good opponent.  His passing was really sharp.  He completed 14 of 18 passes.”

Besides passing for 120 yards and a TD Henneman ran for 69 yards on14 carries.  Jon Christiansen continued his role as the running back.  The sophomore carried 21 times and gained 93 yards.  Montana Riecken had one carry for 6 yards.

Dylan Hardeman was the Cougars’ most productive receiver.  He had 8 catches and gained 98 yards.  He had 8 of the team’s points.  Jacob Whittaker had 4 catches for 7 yards and Jayden Vetick caught 2 and gained 15 yards.

The defense found defensive back Dylan Hardeman as their top tackler.    The senior recorded four solo and three assisted tackles.  Jon Christiansen had five total tackles from his line backer slot.  Tyler Hardeman continued to be the top lineman with three solo and one assisted tackles.  Others listed on the tackle chart were Jayden Vetick with 4, Montana Riecken with 3, Joey O’Connor with 2, and Chas Webb with 1 stop.

The Cougars take to the road again this week.  They will take a 1-1 record into a contest against  Osmond.  The Tigers are coming off a 44-12 win over Winside.  Last season was a disaster for Osmond as injuries and youth cost tem in a 1-7 season.  They should be a tough challenge for Northeast this year.
