Janice M. (Kind) Konicek, 82, of Bancroft NE


Janice M. (Kind) Konicek, 82, of Bancroft, NE passed away Saturday, October 22, 2016 at Legacy Garden Rehabilitation and Living Center in Pender, NE.  Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, October 26, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Bancroft, NE; Fr. Paul Ortmeier will be officiating.  The visitation will be held on Tuesday from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the church with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.  Burial will be in the Bancroft Cemetery.  Memorials are suggested to the family for future designation.  Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home of Bancroft is in charge of the arrangements. 

Janice was born on May 16, 1934 on a farm southwest of Wisner, NE, the daughter of Helmut and Alvina Kind.  Jan attended rural school southwest of Wisner, and graduated from Wisner High School in 1952.  She worked at Hoover’s Café in Wisner, taught rural school, and attended Norfolk Junior College in the summer.  Janice and Donald were united in marriage on January 29, 1955 at St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Wisner.  They lived on a farm northeast of Wisner for one year until moving to a farm east of Bancroft in February, 1956.  Together they farmed, square danced, and showed cutting horses.  In December of 1962 they moved to the farm west of Bancroft and Janice continued to teach country school and graduated from Wayne State College in 1969.  In 1973 she began teaching 4th Grade at Bancroft Elementary School.   In 2000, Janice retired from teaching along with building and moving into their home in Bancroft.  She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church where she was an EME and reader, and also a member of St. Mary’s Altar Society.

Janice took great pride in her teaching, and especially enjoyed teaching her students about Nebraska history.  After retiring from teaching, she worked part-time at the city clerk’s office, worked part-time for a CPA, was a member of the Bancroft Betterment Board, and sold tickets at the Cuming County Fair.   She enjoyed researching genealogy, bowling, playing cards, her lawn and garden, family holidays especially Christmas when she decorated 18 Christmas trees in her home, and attending many family sports events and activities.  She and Don especially enjoyed traveling to many horse shows with their kids and she sometimes competed herself, and they enjoyed traveling to high school rodeos in Nebraska and other states with their 4 children and continued this hobby by going on vacations to various rodeos with friends such as Calgary, Las Vegas, Pendleton, Cheyenne, and Dodge City.  Due to her declining health, Jan moved into Legacy Garden in January, 2015.

Janice is survived by her husband Don, of 61 years, children:  Jeffrey (Sherry) Konicek of Wisner, NE, Bradley Konicek of Wisner, NE, Kellee (Len) Hermelbracht of Bancroft, NE, and Barrey (Melissa) Konicek of Ord, NE, eleven grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Elton and sister-in-law Mary Kind, and a grandson-in-law Niall Hansen.

Shirley Habrock, 90, of Emerson NE


Shirley Habrock, 90, of Emerson, NE, passed away Friday, October 7, 2016 at her home surrounded by her family. Mass of Christian Burial services will be Monday, October 10, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Emerson; Father Gerald Leise officiating. The visitation will be Sunday, October 9, 2016 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. The burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Emerson. Shirley was born February 28, 1926 on a farm northwest of Emerson to Henry and Annie (McDonough) Paulsen. She attended District 66 for 8 years and graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Emerson in 1943. She then enrolled at Commercial Extension, a business school, in Omaha, NE. Shirley was then employed by Blue Cross in Omaha for nearly 3 years.

During that time, her cousin and she witnessed the end of WWII celebration in downtown Omaha. The police allowed the happy, joyful, hugging people to overflow into the streets and intersections, blocking any traffic.

Shirley married Wilbur Habrock in 1950 and resided on a farm southwest of Emerson. Six children were born to this union. Upon the passing of her parents, they moved into her current home in 1989, northwest of Emerson. Wilbur passed away in 2001. She continued to live on this farm enjoying the comfort of her home and flowers. She loved the presence of her family and friends, cooking and reading, her computer, and various everyday challenges. She looked forward to visits from children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Shirley is survived by her children, LeAnn Obrecht of Lincoln, NE, Janelle and Bill McTaggart of Hartington, NE, Linda and Glen Prinz of West Point, NE, Lorie and Glen Meyer of Pender, NE, Gary and Sandy (Belt) Habrock of rural Emerson, NE, Jolene Koehler of Norfolk; 17 grandchildren; 23 ½ great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Helen (Habrock) Kai of Dalton, NE; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ted and Mylet Habrock of Wayne, NE.

She is preceded in death by her husband; son-in-law, Bill Obrecht; and two grandchildren, Eric and Brian McTaggart.

James “Jack” F. Buhr, Sr., 69, of Pender NE


James “Jack” F. Buhr, Sr., 69, of Pender, NE passed away on Sunday, September 18, 2016 at his home in Pender after a long battle with ALS. The memorial service will be Friday, September 23, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Munderloh-Smith Funeral Home in Pender; Chaplain Rosalind Woods will be officiating. The burial will be at a later date. Jack was born July 5, 1947 in Omaha, NE to Herschel and Margret (Spaudling) Buhr. He lived in south Omaha until he joined the U.S. Army in July of 1966. Jack married Kathy Morgan on November 6, 1975, to this marriage brought two sons and a daughter.

After three years maintaining tanks in the Army, he joined the U.S. Air Force, where he served for 19 years as an aircraft electrician. During this time, he served all over the world including tours in German, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and Thailand, where he supported the Vietnam War. While stationed at Offutt Air Air Force Base for seven years, he flew on the E4, Airborne Command Post during President Jimmy Carter’s presidency. While his seven years at Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota, he designed and built a piece of equipment to mount in a KC 135 that saved a child’s life. The box was to support medical evacuations. During his Air Force career, he reached the rank of Master Sergeant, and towards the end was Assistant Superintendent of the Ellsworth tanker specialist flight and supervised over 150 people. After retiring from the Air Force in 1988, he worked in construction and maintenance and as a corrections officer for Thurston County.

Jack’s favorite past time was fast pitch softball. He was a pitcher in Class A in the Omaha Softball Association. He loved traveling, camping and fishing with his family in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

Jack is survived by his wife, Kathy; children, James, Jr. (Leah) Buhr of Huntsville, AL, Nicole (Richard) Tangeman of Pender, NE, P.J. (Emily) Buhr of Omaha, NE; sister, Marlena Minshall of Council Bluffs, IA; sister-in-law, Sandy Buhr of Omaha, NE; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Jim and Jean Morgan of Decatur, NE, nine grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Sherman and Lloyd Buhr; brother-in-law, James Minshall; and parents-in-law, Jim and Evelyn Morgan.

Melba was born October 27, 1929 to Gerhard and Adeline (VonSeggern) Schnier in Pender, NE. She graduated from Pender High School in 1946. On December 21, 1947, she married Glenn E. Cooper in Pender. Together they farmed for many years, and then Glenn began selling grain bins. In addition, they could see the need for the manufacturing and selling of agriculture products, and established Triple “C” Products in Bancroft NE. Several years later they also ventured into a second business, and established Northeast Tractor Salvage in Lyons NE. Both Glenn and Melba enjoyed serving the local farmers and area businesses. Melba joined St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bancroft on October 21, 1969 where she served on the Alter Society and was an officer countless times. She also was a Hospice volunteer for many years. Melba loved helping her church and community, but most of all, she loved spending time with her family.

She is survived by her sons; Gary (CynDee) Cooper of Bancroft, NE, Clayton (Trudy) Cooper of West Point, NE; daughter, Glenda (Mike) Gatzemeyer of Pender, NE; 7 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Melba was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Glenn Cooper; and siblings, Gerald Schnier, Angus Johnson, Les Schnier, Wilma Nixon, and Kenny Schnier.

Orma was born on March 23, 1925 in Bancroft, NE, the daughter of Julius and Catherine Margaret (Leu) Witt. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Pender, NE. On February 1, 1948, Orma was united in marriage to Alfred Beckmann at Bancroft, NE. To this union seven children were born: Marlin, Caroline, Marie, Dale, Alvin, JoAnn and Leora. The couple farmed in the Pender area until retiring and moving into Pender, NE in 1989. Alfred died on November 4, 1997. Orma was an active member at St. John’s Lutheran Church serving in the Ladies aid and the LWML.

She is survived by her children Marlin (Ruth) Beckmann of Pender, NE, Caroline (Don) Zila of Thurston, NE, Marie (Larry) Sokol of Wayne, NE, Dale (Becky) Beckmann of Norfolk, NE, Alvin (Barb) Beckmann of Norfolk, NE, JoAnn (Scott) Henrickson of Stanton, NE and Leora (Mark) Peterson of Gretna, NE. Orma is also survived by 18 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, 4 step grandchildren, 13 step great grandchildren, and a sister Norma Novak of Randolph, NE.

Orma was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Alfred, twin grandchildren Heather and Matthew Henrickson, 4 brothers: Elmer, Ervin, Eldin and Melvin Witt and a sister Elna (Witt) Sila.
