Jeanne M. (Henderson) Gardner, 83, of Wakefield NE


Jeanne M. (Henderson) Gardner, 83, of Wakefield, Nebraska died on Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at Providence Medical Center in Wayne, Nebraska. A celebration of Jeanne’s life will be held on Friday, September 26, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Wakefield; Pastor Kelly Johnston will be officiating. The visitation will be held on Thursday, September 25, 2014 from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the Little Red Hen Theater (located at 316 Main St.) in Wakefield. Inurnment will be in the Wakefield Cemetery. Lunch will follow at the Wakefield American Legion Hall. Bressler – Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home of Wakefield is in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the family for future designation.

Jeanne was born on November 14, 1930 in Emerson, Nebraska, the daughter of Frank and Cora (Heckens) Henderson. She graduated from Emerson High School in 1948 and later graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English. She was united in marriage to Daniel Gardner on January 23, 1953. Jeanne was the proud mother of Alan, David, Kirk and Leslie. As a young mother she was active as a Cub Scout Den Mother, a 4-H Leader, active in Salem Lutheran Church as a church council member and teaching Sunday school, and a member of the Prairie Hills Girls Scout Board and the Wakefield Health Care Center Board. Later in life she was quite active as a founding member of the Nebraskans for the Arts, President of the Gardner Foundation, Local S.T.A.R.T Chairperson, Producer of the Little Red Hen Theater, Owner and Restorer of Jeanne’s at the Haskell House, Area Physician Recruitment Committee, co-chair of the Wayne State Capital Campaign, Marian Health Care Center Board, Marian Health Care Center Foundation Board, the Sioux City Symphony Board and Foundation, the Sioux City Art Center Board, Wakefield Community Foundation Board and Honorary Board of Directors of the John G. Neihardt Center.

Most of all, Jeanne was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be missed by her family and all who knew her. Jeanne is survived by her sons: David (Rosemary) Gardner of Sheldon, SC and Kirk Gardner of Bellevue, NE and a daughter Leslie (Tim) Bebee of Wakefield, NE. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Adam, Brooke and Jordan Gardner, Ross, Kyle and Carly Gardner, Javanah Jensen, Timarie Hansen and Garek Bebee, and great grandchildren: Jaxon Benscoter, Saul Hansen, Ryker Jensen, Cole Gardner and Baby Hansen due in November. Her brother Sterling Henderson of Norfolk, NE also survives Jeanne.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Dan, a son Alan Gardner and two brothers: Harley Henderson and Mort Henderson.

Michael John Grashorn, 62, of Rosalie NE


MICHAEL JOHN GRASHORN, 62 years, of Rosalie, Nebraska, passed away Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at the St. Francis Memorial Hospital in West Point, Nebraska.

Michael was born on February 13, 1952 in Norfolk, Nebraska, to Richard and Dorothy (Cerny) Grashorn. He attended school and graduated from Wisner Public School.

On April 18, 1976, Mike was married to Glenda (Buck) Gustin. They lived most of their married lives on a small farm south of Rosalie, Nebraska. Mike enjoyed raising and selling quarter horses. He worked at IBP in Dakota City until he was diagnosed with MS in 1986. Mike enjoyed watching westerns and rodeos on TV, taking care of his yard, playing with his two dogs and spending time with his nieces and nephews and their children.

He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Shannon Michaela Grashorn; his father, Richard; brother-in-law, Ronald Buck Sr. and sister-in-law, Bev Grashorn.

Survivors include his wife, Glenda of Rosalie; step daughter, Shawn Dolezal of Minnesota; sister, Connie (Chris) Niles of Pierce, Nebraska; two brothers, Roger (Sharon) Grashorn of West Point, Nebraska, Gerald Grashorn of Bismarck, North Dakota; brother-in-law, James (Terri) Buck of Lyons, Nebraska; and sister-in-law, Sharon Buck of West Point.

Donald Lee “Donnie” Modlin, 57 of Craig NE


DONALD LEE “DONNIE” MODLIN, 57 years, of Craig, Nebraska, passed away Monday, September 8, 2014, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima, Ohio, after and unexpected illness.

Donnie was born March 1, 1957, in O’Neill, Nebraska, the son of William “Bill” and Doris (Lindberg) Modlin. He graduated from Oakland Craig High School in 1975.  Donnie served in the U. S. Navy from 1976 to 1979 and was stationed in San Diego California and Cleveland, Ohio.

On May 17, 1985, Donnie married Judy G. Tomasek of Garrettsville, Ohio.

Donnie owned and operated Best Mesquite Smoked Meats in Tucson, Arizona, before returning to Craig in June 1987 and was employed by Gustafson Plumbing. During this time he served his community as a volunteer firefighter and emergency medical technician (EMT). He began his career with DTZ in 2001 and was promoted to Quantitative PM Planner, a new cutting edge position, during which time he developed PM Programs that continue to be used at multiple Cargill facilities and business units today. He then assumed the role of project crew manager and most recently continued in this role as well as served in a support role for facilities in Dalhart and Bovina, Texas and Spiritwood, ND.

One of Donnie’s loves was cooking. He and his family also owned and operated “The Library” in Craig for 13 years. In addition to his love of cooking, he enjoyed golf, car racing, motorcycles, fishing, the outdoors, Husker football and spending time with family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; father, Bill; brother, Charles Modlin; sister-in-law, Geri-Ann Dietz; great niece, Sierra Wilcox; and many aunts and uncles.

Survivors include his wife, Judy of Craig; three children and their families including two grandchildren, Brandon (Alyssia) Modlin and their children, Hayden and Brooklyn of Bancroft, NE, Jordon (Sachia) Modlin of Craig and LaDona Modlin of Craig; mother, Doris Modlin of Craig; sisters and brothers, Lorri (Don) Steffen of Sunrise Beach, MO, Kim Ford of Thorsby, AL, Janice (Keith) Magill of Tekamah, NE, Cyns (Mike) Johnson of Oakland, NE, Mark (Sylvia) Johnson of Tekamah, NE, Jeff (Marcie) Johnson of Lincoln, NE; brothers-in-law, Dale (Jennifer) Tomasek of Hiram, OH; Henry Dietz of Cary, NC; 13 nephews; 10 nieces; 17 great nephews; 10 great nieces; an aunt, Betty Modlin of Fremont, NE; and several cousins.
