Happenings at the Heights

The month of November has given us some frigid temperatures and snow to make it even colder outdoors.

Our Waffle Supper is Thursday, November 20th at 5:30 p.m.

Activities for the week of November 20th to November 30th are as follows: Reading with Marilyn, Manicures, Resident Council Meeting, Sing Along, Catholic Mass, Game Day, Bingo with Methodist, Reminiscing Group, Let’s Play Ball, Crafty Cooking, Bingo, Movie, Nebraska Football, Lawrence Welk, Church Tape and Church Service with First Baptist.

Thursday, November 27th, there will be no activities due to the Thanksgiving Holiday.

On Friday, December 5th from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm we will be having our Annual Holiday Bazaar, please stop by and do some of your holiday shopping.

Yvonne S. Stromquist, 79 years, of Oakland, Nebraska, passed away Sunday, November 16, 2014, at Oakland Heights, in Oakland.

FUNERAL SERVICE: Wednesday, November 19, 2014, at 2:00 pm, at the Evangelical Free Church in Oakland

VISITATION: Tuesday, November 18, from 4-7 pm with family receiving friends at Pelan Funeral Home in Oakland. Visitation will also be held at the church one hour prior to service.

BURIAL: Oakland Cemetery, Oakland

We have a couple of events this week, on Thursday November 13th Charlie Davis will be here at 2:30pm to play his harmonica, on Saturday November 15th Rusty Buckets will be performing at 2:30 pm and the Nebraska Football game will be on also at 2:30 on Channel 7. Next week on Thursday November 20th is our monthly Waffle Supper at 5:30 pm.

Church Services for Sunday November 16th at 2:30 pm will be given by the St. John Lutheran Church with a luncheon served afterwards. On Monday November 17th at 2:30 is Communion with First Lutheran.

Activities for the week of November 17th to November 22nd   are as followed, Reading with Marilyn, Manicures, Game Day, Sing A Long, Crafts, Bingo w/Salem, Bible Fellowship , Word Games Crafty cooking, Friday Bingo, Let’s Play Ball, Saturday morning movie, Nebraska Football, and Lawrence Walk.

Happenings at the Heights

We had a fun week last week, it was great to see the Kindergarteners here on Thursday and the Residents Halloween party went good, the winners of the costume contest was 1st place Roger Huber as a old biker, 2nd place was Kathy Reed as a witch and 3rd place was Angie Bicking as a ring master. The winners of the pumpkin decorating contest in 1st place Nancy Silvey with the Shrek pumpkin, 2nd place was Assisted Living with the Mr. and Mrs. AL, and 3rd place was Connie Schneekloth with the Owl pumpkin. The winner of the Jar of tootsie rolls was Joan Price and the winner of the Jar of suckers was Jessica Gardeman. It was a fun party.

On Thursday the 6th of this week is a Puttin on the Ritz Soup and Sandwich Dinner at 11:30 am for the residents. Next week on Tuesday November 11th at 11:15 am we will be going down to Golden Oaks for their Potluck. Then in the afternoon at 2:30 we will be having a assortment of pumpkin desserts provided by the PR committee. On Thursday November 13th Charlie Davis will be here to play his Harmonica. Then on Saturday November 15th the Rusty buckets will be here to play at 2:30 pm.

Church Service for Sunday November 9th at 2:30 pm will be given by the First Lutheran Church with a luncheon served afterwards. On Tuesday November 11th at 9:30 am is Catholic Mass with Father Paul.

Laurence James “Larry” Hultquist, 85, of Oakland NE


LAURENCE JAMES “LARRY” HULTQUIST, 85 years, of Oakland, Nebraska, passed away Friday, October 31, 2014, at Oakland Heights.

Laurence was born April 14, 1929, in Burt County, Nebraska, to Sherman and Zella (Marsolf) Hultquist. He was confirmed in 1942 at West Side United Methodist Church in rural Oakland. He graduated from Oakland High School in 1947 and farmed for his dad and Kermit Moseman from 1947 – 1951.

In January 1951, Laurence entered the U. S. Air Force, stationed at Lackland AF Base, San Antonia, Texas for basic training and Sheppard Field in Wichita Falls, Texas until 1954 where he trained for general aircraft maintenance. He unfortunately contracted polio and was hospitalized and discharged in 1954. His family returned to Oakland.  He battled polio for over six months. From Jan 1955 until March 55 he drove truck for Bob Case.

In March 1955, he reenlisted in the Air Force and was stationed at Offutt AF Base in Omaha for three years. In 1958 he was sent to Newfoundland. He returned home on emergency leave to help on the farm as his dad was injured in a farm accident.  In 1961, he served in Illinois and Michigan before being sent to Vandenberg AF Base in California. He returned to Offutt for a short time before being sent to Wheeliss AF Base in Lybia, Africa and was sent to  Spain for weather training on upper air balloons.  Returning to Africa, Laurence contracted hepatitis with complications of mononucleosis and was hospitalized for an extended time in Germany, New Jersey, St. Louis, Missouri and Chinute AF Base in Illinois and was then sent to Folk Field in Wisconsin. From 1967 to 1968, Laurence served in Viet Nam.  Before returning home, he was fortunate to spend two weeks R & R in Australia. Upon his return

to the states, he served his last five years at Ft. Warren in Cheyenne, Wyoming. He was honorably discharged in 1973.

Following his discharge he worked in commercial flooring in Cheyenne for 13 year before returning to Nebraska and farming.  Laurence also drove truck for Agland and CVA for many years before fully retiring in 2007.

Laurence was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Oakland.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Pamela Tate; sister, Deanna Betts; sister-in-law, Donna Hultquist; brother-in-law, Kermit Moseman.

Survivors include his son, Larry (Maggy) Hultquist of Tigard, OR; daughter, Sheila Keenan of Camas, WA; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren; sister, Lorelei (Jim) Wickstrom of Omaha, NE; brothers, Bill Hultquist of Oakland, Dewey (Myra) of Lyons, KS, Harold (Leona) of Fremont, NE; brother-in-law, Don Betts of Plainview, NE.

We would like to congratulate Alicia Isner on her 5 year anniversary on being employed here at Oakland Heights. On Thursday October 30th at 2:00 pm the OC Kindergarteners will come and perform some Halloween songs, and on Friday October 31st is the residents Halloween party, we have many contest going on this week, a pumpkin decorating contest, candy jar count, and on Halloween staff and residents can dress up for Halloween and we will have a contest at the party on the residents favorites. Next week on Monday November 3rd is the monthly volunteer executive meeting at 2:30 pm, and on Thursday November 6th is a Soup and Sandwich Puttin on the Ritz Dinner for the residents at 11:30 pm.

Church Service for Sunday November 2nd at 2:30 pm will be given by the Elim Lutheran Church with a luncheon served afterwards. On Wednesday November 5th at 1:00 will be communion with Pastor Hoden.

Activities for the week of November 3rd to November 8th are as followed, Reading with Marilyn, Manicures, Sing A Long, Game Day, Bingo w/WOW, Bible Fellowship , Crafty cooking, Friday Bingo, Let’s Play Ball, Saturday morning movie, and Lawrence Walk.

Happenings at Oakland Heights

It’s that time of year when the leaves are turning the beautiful fall colors, due to some windy and cold weather last week we were unable to take a fall ride , so this Wednesday October 22nd we will be taking a fall ride at 2:30 pm.

Next week will be a fun and busy week, on Monday October 27th at 2:30 pm is the monthly Resident Council Meeting, Tuesday October 28th we will be celebrating Alicia Isner’s 5 year employee coffee and rolls at 2:30 pm, we also have many Halloween festival activities, starting on Wednesday October 29th at 2:30 pm with the help of the residents we will be making up Halloween treat bags. On Thursday October 30th at 2:00 pm the O-C Kindergarten will be here to sing for the resident’s in there Halloween costumes. And on Friday Halloween we will be having the residents Halloween party at 2:30 pm, we will be announcing the winners of the Jack o lantern contest, and best Halloween Costume contest, staff and residents are welcome to dress up in costume for that day. In the evening the residents will be ready to hand out treats for any Trick or Treaters that would like to come up to the Home.

Church Service for Sunday October 26th at 2:30 pm will be given by the First United Methodist Church with a luncheon served afterwards. On Tuesday October 28th at 9:30 am is Catholic Mass with Father Paul.

This week is our monthly Waffle Supper on Thursday October 16th at 5:30 pm and to round off the week on Saturday October 18th the Rusty Buckets will be here to perform at 2:30pm also on Saturday we will be showing the Nebraska Football Game at 6:30pm on the Big Ten Network in the front lobby. Next week we will be having Show and Share on Wednesday October 22nd at 2:30 pm and on Thursday October 23 is the residents General Store from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm and on Saturday October 25th we will be showing the Nebraska Football game.

Church Service for Sunday October 19th at 2:30 pm will be given by the Craig – Alder Grove Church with a luncheon served afterwards. On Monday October 20th is Communion with First Lutheran Church at 2:30 pm.
