The residents had a good time at the Valentine party last week, we crowned our 2017 King and Queen, Delwin Benne and Betty Homes. This week we will be having a Movie Matinee on Thursday February 23 at 2:30 pm. serving pop and popcorn. Next Monday February 27th is our monthly resident council meeting at 2:30 pm. We have a couple of residents celebrating birthday’s next week, Rosemary Kai on February 27, and Millie Moseman on March 3rd.

Church Service for Sunday February 26thwill be given by Craig/Alder Grove Church at 2:30 pm with a luncheon following service. On Tuesday February 28th is Catholic Mass at 9:30 am given by Father Paul, then on Wednesday we will be having Communion with Pastor Hoden at 1:00 pm.

Activities for the week of Feb. 27th to March 4th are as follows, reading with Jill, Manicures, Sing A Long, Game Day, Bingo the w/WOW, Reading Group, Bible Fellowship, Word Games, Let’s Play Ball, Crafty Cooking, Friday Bingo, and Lawrence Walk.

Starting a new month this week and February brings a lot of fun activities. This week on Thursday February 2nd is Ground Hog Day and we will be having Ground Hog Trivia game at 2:30 pm. We will also get out the Voting ballets this week for our Resident Valentine King and Queen. Next week on February 6th is our monthly Volunteer Executive meeting at 2:30 pm. Then on Thursday February 9th Charlie Davis will be here to perform at 2:30 pm and on Friday February is Happy Hour at 2:30 pm.

Church Service for Sunday February 5th will be given by Salem Covenant Church at 2:30 pm with a luncheon following service. On Tuesday February 7th, there will be Catholic Mass at 9:30 am given by Father Paul and on Wednesday February 8th is Communion with Pastor Hoden.

We have a couple of residents celebrating birthdays , Lillian Mueller on January 28th and Janet Stofferahn on January 31st . Next week we have the monthly Resident Council meeting on Monday January 30th at 2:30 pm. On Tuesday January 31st is National Bubble Wrap day and we will be serving Donuts and coffee, and relieving some stress with popping of bubble wrap. We also are starting a new month and on Thursday is February 2nd, Ground Hog day we will be having some fun activities that day in observance.

Church Service for Sunday January 29th will be given by St. John Lutheran Church at 2:30 pm with a luncheon following service.

Activities for the week of Jan. 16th to Jan. 21st are as follows, reading with Jill, Manicures, Sing a Long, Game Day, Bingo the w/WOW, Reading Group, Bible Fellowship, Trivia Games,   Let’s Play Ball, Crafty Cooking, Friday Bingo, and Lawrence Walk.

This week on Thursday January 12 th Charlie Davis will be here to perform at

2:30 pm and on Friday January 13 th is national popcorn day and we will be serving

a variety of popcorn at Happy Hour starting at 2:30 pm. Next week on Wednesday

we will be serving Honey buns and coffee at 2:30 pm in observance of Winnie the

Pooh Day. Then on Thursday January 19 th is Waffle Supper night starting at 5:30

pm. And on Friday January 20 th we will be having a 10-year Staff Anniversary

party for Connie Schneekloth at 2:30 pm. On Saturday January 21 st, the Rusty

Buckets will be here to perform at 2:30 pm.

Church Service for Sunday January 15 th will be given by First United

Methodist Church at 2:30 pm with a luncheon following service. On Monday

January 16 th is communion with First Lutheran Church at 2:30 pm.

Mava J. Johnson, 80 years, of Oakland, Nebraska, passed away Saturday, December 17, 2016 at Oakland Heights in Oakland.

Arrangements are pending with Pelan Funeral Services Oakland.

Loraine I. Hooks, 91, of Lyons NE


Loraine I. Hooks, age 91, of Lyons, Nebraska passed away Sunday, December 11, 2016, at Oakland Heights in Oakland, Nebraska.  A Celebration of Life service will be on Thursday, December 15, 2016, 1 p.m. at Pelan Funeral Services in Lyons, Nebraska with burial at a later date.  There is no visitation.  Memorials are suggested to the Robert Klase – Rogers VFW Auxiliary, Lyons Community Club & Nebraska Humane Society.  Pelan Funeral Services in Lyons is in charge of arrangements.

Loraine I. Hooks was born December 16, 1924, in Kennard, Nebraska, to Lillard S. and Myrtle A. (Petersen) Jensen. She passed away Sunday, December 11, 2016, at Oakland Heights in Oakland, Nebraska, at the age of 91 years.

Loraine attended country school, and graduated from Blair High School in 1941.  She loved gardening, cooking and especially shopping.

On August 22, 1945, Loraine and Leo Hooks were united in marriage in Omaha, Nebraska.  They were married almost 62 years.  They have one daughter, Melissa.

Loraine was a member of the Eastern Star and was a past Worthy Matron for Esther Chapter No. 208, OES.  She was also a longtime member of the Burt County Extension Club and the First Presbyterian Church in Lyons.  She was actively involved in the Robert Klase – Rogers VFW Auxiliary.

Loraine’s hobbies included anything to do with gardening, her club activities, camping, and her grandson, Søren.  She loved people and especially enjoyed talking on the phone, playing cards and taking care of her cat, Buffy.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leo; and sister, Eleanor Hansen.

Survivors include her daughter, Melissa, of Papillion, NE; grandson, Søren also of Papillion; sisters and brother, Lois Eaton, Mary Ann (Ralph) Nielsen, and James (Joan) Jensen all of Omaha, NE; many nieces and nephews.

We have a fun week coming up this week, on Thursday December 8 th

Charlie Davis will be here to play the harmonica at 2:30 pm. On Friday December

9 th is our Annual Christmas Dinner and Party, for Residents and invited Family

members, dinner starting at 6:00 pm followed by entertainment with Wayne Miller

and Santa Claus making an appearance. Next week on Thursday December 15th is

the monthly general store for residents from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm. It is going to be a

Christmas store event for the residents to do some Christmas shopping.

Church Service for Sunday December 11 th will be given by Salem Covenant

Church at 2:30 pm with a luncheon following service. On Tuesday December 13 th

is Catholic Mass by Father Paul at 9:30 am.

Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving, we will be starting a new month this week with a lot of Holiday activities going on.  But first we have a couple of residents celebrating their birthdays Fauniel Paulson on November 30th   and Janet Kroger on December 6th.

On Friday is our Annual Holiday Bazaar, we will have many new items this year, Wreaths more crafts, Jewelry, to go along with all of your favorites, and door prizes. So, stop in Friday December 2nd from 8 am to 1 pm. to do some of your holiday shopping. On Saturday December 3rd, the Uehling FF Drama Association will be here at 3:00 pm to put on a Christmas Play in the dinning room. Next week on Monday December 5th is the Volunteer Executive Meeting at 2:30 pm. Then on Thursday December 8th Charlie Davis will be here to play his Harmonica. Oakland Heights Activity Memory Fund

A memorial was given in memory Dale Johnson by Jill Brink. We has a couple of memorials given in memory of Curly Nelson by Frelon Danielson, and Gaylen and Nadine Anderson.

Merlin W. “Curly” Nelson, 92, of Oakland NE


Merlin W. “Curly” Nelson was born to Gust William and Julia Augusta (Anderson) Nelson on January 1, 1924, in Oakland, Nebraska. He passed away with his family by his side on Thursday, November 10, 2016 at Oakland Heights Nursing Home, at the age of 92 years.

Curly graduated from Oakland High School in May, 1942 and served in the Army from 1942 to 1946. He drove a tank in the Philippines during World War II. Upon discharge, Curly worked in his Dad’s grocery business. He also drove ambulance and worked with Palmquist Funeral Home. He fell in love with the nurse who was riding in the ambulance while he was driving patients to Omaha, Sara Jane Weaver, and they married on January 7, 1951. Two daughters were born to this union, Marilee Sue and Julie Ann.

His dream of building a grocery store became a reality in 1961. In 1989, his daughter, Julie, bought the business when Curly retired. In 2006, Curly and Julie celebrated their 100th anniversary of their family business with a year-long celebration.

In 2013, Curly was named Swedish King at the Oakland Swedish Festival. Curly was a member of First Covenant Church, now used as the Swedish Heritage Center. Upon its closing in 1985, he moved his membership to the First Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Curly is survived by his daughters, Marilee (Jim) Groth and Julie (Terry) Johnson of Oakland. He has four grandchildren, Elisabeth (Chad) Linder and Dillon (Kelli) Johnson of Oakland, Tyler Groth of Lincoln, and Emilee Groth of Omaha. He has six great- grandchildren, Zoe, Mia and Gabi Linder and Ava, Landon and Scarlett Johnson of Oakland. His special friend, Arlene Carper of Oakland, has been his companion for over 20 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife Sara Jane in 1986.

Memorial Visitation will be Mon., Nov. 14th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Pelan Funeral Services in Oakland. Family will be receiving friends during this time.

Memorial Service will be Tues., Nov. 15th at 10:30 a.m. at the Swedish Heritage Center. Burial is at the Oakland Cemetery with Military Honors.
