What a nice Fourth of July celebration, was a busy weekend for many. Next week we will be having our monthly Volunteer Executive meeting on Monday July 11th at 2:30 pm. On Tuesday July 12th we will be having a cook out for the resident’s noon meal and then we will be taking them out for a Van ride at 2:30 pm. On Thursday July 14th Charlie Davis will be here to play his harmonica. And on Saturday July 16th the Rusty Buckets will perform at 2:30 pm. We would also like to wish a Happy Birthday to Dolores Anderson she celebrates her birthday on July 10th.

Church Service for Sunday July 10th at 2:30 pm will be given by the Evangelical Free Church with a luncheon served afterwards. There will be Catholic Mass on Tuesday July 12th at 9:30am given by Father Paul.

Activities for the week of July 11th   to July 16th     are as follows, Reading with Jill, Manicures, Sing a Long, Bingo the w/Evang. Free., Coffee and Conversations,   Bible Fellowship,  Let’s Play Ball, Crafty Cooking, Friday Bingo, Saturday morning video, and Lawrence Walk.

This week we have our monthly Waffle Supper on Thursday June 16th serving at 5:30 pm. On Saturday June 18th the Rusty Buckets will be here to perform at 2:30 pm. Next week on Monday June 20th we will be having a Father’s Day celebration at 2:30 pm with entertainment by Jerry Stingley and serving Banana floats. On Tuesday June 21st at 11:15 am we will be going to Golden Oaks for their potluck.

Church Service for Sunday June 19th at 2:30 pm will be given by the St. John Lutheran Church with a luncheon served afterwards. On Tuesday June 21st is Catholic Mass at 9:30 am given by Father Paul.

Activities for the week of June 20th   to June 25th   are as follows, Reading with Jill, Manicures, Sing a Long, Game Day, Trivia , Bingo the w/Staff, Coffee and Conversation,   Bible Fellowship, Word Games, Let’s Play Ball, Crafty Cooking, Friday Bingo, Saturday morning video, and Lawrence Walk.

Had another nice weekend. On Monday June 13th we will be celebrating a 10 year employee anniversary for Christina Arnold, the party will be at 2:30 pm. On Tuesday June 14th we will be serving a Puttin on the Ritz Salad Luncheon for the residents at 11:30          am. Then on Thursday June 16th is the monthly Waffle Supper at 5:30 pm so come and enjoy dinner with your family member. Then on Saturday June 18th at 2:30 pm the Rusty Buckets will be here. We also have a resident celebrating a birthday next week, Happy Birthday to Iona Long on June 15th.

Bertha Mellor, 96, of Oakland NE


Bertha Mellor was born March 6, 1920 to Hugo and Ellen (Johnson) Gustafson near Craig, Nebraska. She passed away May 27, 2016 at Oakland Heights in Oakland, Nebraska, at the age of 96 years.

Bertha grew up on a farm near Oakland and graduated from Oakland High School. She moved from the farm to Omaha where she worked at Immanuel Hospital with her sister Vivian. Bertha and Vivian traveled to California. While there, Bertha met and married Sherril Mellor in 1943, when she was 23.

Sherril’s service in the military led him and Bertha to live in Utah, California and Nebraska. The couple eventually made Nebraska their permanent home, and lived in Omaha, where they raised three boys; Raymond, Darrel and Gary. Sherril passed away in 1994.

Bertha was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Omaha. She loved planting and growing flowers, sewing, quilting and taking care of her family. She lived in the same house for over 50 years. Before suffering a stroke in 2011, Bertha was an ardent reader of the Bible and many Bible related books. She daily read and listened to Christian radio programs and took careful notes.

She was preceded in death by her parents; infant sister, Arlene; husband, Sherril Mellor; brother, Clifford Gustafson; sister and brother-in-law, Vivian and Cleo Smith; sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Oscar Anderson.

Survivors include her sons, Raymond Mellor of Wilsonville, OR, Darrel Mellor of Olympia, WA, Gary (Jayne) Mellor of Omaha, NE; nine grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Wed., June 1st from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Pelan Funeral Services in Oakland with family receiving friends.

The Funeral Service is Thurs., June 2nd at 10:30 a.m. at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oakland NE.

Visitation will also be held one hour prior to service at the church.

Burial is in the Oakland Cemetery.

Memorials suggested to the family for designation at a later time.

National Nursing Home Week at Oakland Heights

I would like to thank all of the volunteers who came up last week and helped with the carnival games we had in celebration of National Nursing Home week. This week we have our monthly Waffle Supper on Thursday May 19th serving from 5:30 pm to 6:00 pm, and on Saturday May 21st the Rusty Buckets will be here to perform at 2:30 pm. Next week we have our resident council meeting on Monday May 23rd at 2:30 pm., on Thursday May 26th is the General Store for the residents from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm. And celebrating a birthday next week is Alice Lindgren on May 28th.

Church Service for Sunday May 22nd   at 2:30 pm will be given by the Evangelical Free Church with a luncheon served afterwards. On Tuesday May 24th is Catholic Mass at 9:30 am given by Father Paul.

Activities for the week of May 23rd   to May 27th   are as follows, Reading with Jill, Manicures, Sing a Long, Game Day, Bingo the w/Staff, Reading Group,   Bible Fellowship, Let’s Play Ball, Crafty Cooking, Friday Bingo, Saturday morning video, and Lawrence Walk.

Millicent J. Troupe, 93 years, of Oakland, Nebraska, passed away Monday, May 16, 2016 at Oakland Heights in Oakland.

Happenings at Oakland Heights: Mother’s Day Tea, Nations Nursing Home Week

The month of May is here, and National Nursing Home Week starts next week. We begin with our Mother’s Day Tea Party on Monday May 9th at 2:30 pm with entertainment with Two Gals and a song. On Tuesday May 10th is our around the World Hat day and we be having entertainment with the Arthrightious Brothers at 2:30 pm and serving Root beer Floats. Then on Wednesday May 11th is our Cowboy day and we will be having a cookout for the residents and at 2:30 pm Entertainment with Ron Schulzkump. On Thursday May 12th is the first day of our World’s Fair, at 2:30 pm we will be having carnival games and food for the residents. And on Friday May 13th is the second day of our World’s Fair, starting with a Staff and Resident Let’s Play Ball Tournament at 10:00 am, then in the afternoon we will be having a Circus in the Front parking lot of the Nursing Home, there will be many animals, a clown and we will be serving watermelon. It looks to be a fun week for all.

Church Service for Sunday May 8th at 2:30 pm will be given by the Salem Covenant Church   with a luncheon served afterwards. On Tuesday May 10th is Catholic Mass with Father Paul at 9:30 am.

Activities for the week of May 9th to May 14th are as follows, Reading with Jill, Sing a Long, Bingo the w/Evang. Free, Bible Fellowship, Saturday morning video, and Lawrence Walk.
