Elsie W. Hansen, 98 years, of Lyons, Nebraska, passed away Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at Nebraska Medicine in Omaha, Nebraska.

Larry Olson, 71, of Lyons NE


Larry Lee Olson was born on October 28, 1944 to John and Mildred (Luse) Olson in Lyons, Nebraska. He passed away Monday, February 29, 2016 at Dunklau Gardens in Fremont, Nebraska, at the age of 71.

Larry continued to live in Lyons, attending school there. He married Linda Jones October 1, 1966 in West Point, Nebraska. To this union were born 2 sons, Jody Olson and Chad Olson.

In the 60s, Larry worked for Logan Valley Transfer. After buying a couple of trucks, he hauled sod for George Bacon. In the 70s, Larry started his own landscaping business and sold firewood in the evenings. In the 80s, he raised and sold trees in addition to opening a pay fee fish business. He was always a hard worker, he was presently selling trees; he continued working seven days a week, up until six months ago.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Linda of Lyons; sons, Jody Olson of MO, Chad Olson of KS; five grandchildren, Cody, Derek, Haley, Jade, Gracie; daughter-in-law, Robin Olson of NE; brother, Les Olson of AR; sisters-in-law, Roxanne (Gary) Phillips of Fremont; Gale (Rich) Penry of Blair, NE; uncles; aunts; nieces and nephews.

The Funeral Service is Sat., March 5th at 2:00 p.m. at Pelan Funeral Services in Lyons NE.

Burial is in the Lyons Cemetery.

Marilyn L. (Lutjen) Wheaton, 80, of Lyons NE


Marilyn L. (Lutjen) Wheaton, 80 years, of Lyons, Nebraska, passed away Wednesday, February 10, 2016 at Nye Legacy in Fremont, Nebraska.

Marilyn Louise Wheaton was born to Herman and Anna (Malinowski) Lutjen on August 11, 1935 in Tilden, Nebraska. She passed away February 10, 2016 at Nye Legacy in Fremont, NE, with her family by her side.

Marilyn was baptized in Tilden, confirmed in Bancroft, NE and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Lyons, NE.

At the age of eight her family moved to Bancroft. She attended Paine Country School and graduated from Bancroft High School in 1952. She received her teaching certificate from Wayne State Teachers College in 1952, and taught at Moore School in rural Lyons from 1952-1953.

On July 26, 1953, she was united in marriage to John Wheaton in South Sioux City, NE. To this union six children were born.

Marilyn and John traveled briefly while John worked road construction before settling in Lyons in 1960. In addition to being a wonderful wife and mother, she enjoyed gardening and canning, sewing, crosswords, Nebraska Football, music, reading, game shows and her grandchildren.

In 1981 Marilyn and John purchased the Hiway Café. She owned and operated the business until she retired in 2012.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; brothers, Elmer and Kenneth; sisters, Marjorie and Luella; son-in-law, Michael Jameson; and her sisters and brothers-in-law.

She is survived by her children, Randall (Lori) Wheaton of Fremont, NE, Brenda Wheaton of Lyons, Carlin Wheaton of Fremont, JoDee Jameson of Lyons, Lori Wheaton of Lyons, Charles (Amy) Wheaton of Lyons; grandchildren, Jessica (Brian) Jones, Dylan Wheaton and fiancé Annie, Clayton Wheaton and Friend Danielle, Loran Wheaton, Bryce Wheaton, Kayli Wheaton, Corbin Wheaton; great grandchildren, Braxton, Kennedi, Kacie, Cassius; sisters, Delores (Marlin) Doht, Judith (Ron) Zakaras; sisters-in-law, Janet Lutjen, Betty Hermelbracht, Bette Herbert and Marie Breuer.

Visitation will be held Sun., Feb. 14th from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Pelan Funeral Services in Lyons NE with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.

The Funeral Service is Mon., Feb. 15th at 2:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Lyons NE. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service at the church.

Verlyn L. Fredrickson, 79 years, of Lyons, Nebraska, passed away Thursday, February 11, 2016 at Fremont Health Medical Center in Fremont, Nebraska.

Lillian “Tiny” Doris Bacon, 87, of Lyons, NE


Lillian “Tiny” Doris Bacon was born on September 11, 1928 in Windom, Minnesota. Her parents were Sam and Lillian (Scheldorf) Martin. Tiny’s battle with dementia took her to Oakland Heights in Oakland, Nebraska where she passed away on Friday, December 4, 2015 at the age of 87 years, 2 months and 23 days.

Tiny came to Lyons with her sister Loretta in 1946, where she met George E. Bacon. She was united in marriage to George in South Sioux City, Nebraska, on July 3, 1948.

They made their home in Lyons. In 1959, they started a business “Bacon Sodding” and built a home, she loved, in Lyons around 1969. She worked for a few years at the telephone company in Lyons as a telephone operator. She enjoyed caring for her family, cooking, baking, canning and an occasional trip to the casino.

She was a member of the Memorial United Methodist Church in Lyons.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George; daughter, Diane Fada; two sons, Kevin and Sam Bacon; two grandsons, George and Kevin Bacon; 4 brothers and sisters.

Tiny is survived by her two children: Valerie Bacon and her friend Carla Robinson of Homeland, California and Gary Bacon and his wife Kristi of Lyons; 4 grandchildren: Alan Bacon of Fremont, Cassie (Bacon) and her husband Ryan Rasmussen of Winterset, Iowa, Tiffany Fada of Auburn, Alabama, and Tyler Fada and his wife Nancy of Lyons; 6 great grandchildren: Blake Bacon, Hunter Bacon, Kennedy Bacon, Nate Bacon, Reiland Rasmussen and Cale Rasmussen; 1 sister; and many other relatives and friends.

Visitation is Sun., Dec. 6th from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Pelan Funeral Services in Lyons.

A Memorial Service will be held Mon., Dec. 7th at 3:00 p.m. at Pelan Funeral Services in Lyons.

Dylan Jean Parsons, infant daughter of Shannon Parsons and Cheri Doyal, went to heaven on Wednesday, August 12, 2015 at Oakland Mercy Hospital in Oakland, Nebraska. She was born on June 30, 2015 in Pender, Nebraska and resided with her parents and siblings in Lyons, Nebraska.

MEMORIAL SERVICE: Monday, August 17, 2015, 11:00 a.m. at Beemer Mennonite Church in Beemer, Nebraska.

Alta Jean Currier, 80 years, of Lyons, Nebraska, passed away Saturday, May 23, 2015 at Oakland Mercy Hospital.

Leroy Walter Viles, 71, of Lyons NE


LEROY WALTER VILES was born to Walter and Frieda (Block) Viles on July 27, 1943 in Bancroft, Nebraska. He passed away on February 19, 2015 after a long illness, at Oakland Mercy Hospital in Oakland, Nebraska, at the age of 71 years.

Leroy graduated from Lyons High School in Lyons, Nebraska in 1961, and shortly after graduation, he joined the US Navy. His boot camp was in San Diego, California, where he met and married his lovely bride Sandra Brewer, on July 26, 1963.

While in the Navy, he toured all of Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean. Around the United States, from California, Rhode Island, the Carolinas, Alaska and Hawaii, he enjoyed these duty stations with his family. He volunteered his services, of ministry and addiction counseling, to fellow sailors in the Navy. His honors include Transit of the Suez Canal and Ancient Order of the Shellbacks. He worked as a Radioman for 20 years in the Navy, and he retired after 20 years of service, to assist his parents on the farm. He was also a professional driver.

Leroy enjoyed traveling, fishing and camping with his wife and family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Frieda Viles.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra Viles, of Lyons; daughters, Lesley Bush, of Bremerton, WA, Renee (Mark) Dietrich, of LeMars, IA, April (Tom) Owen, of Spearfish, SD; sisters, Ann Anderson, of Yelm, WA, Dorothy (John) Case, of Crofton, NE; six grandchildren; one great grandchild.

MEMORIAL SERVICE: Saturday, February 28, 2015, at 10:30 am at the Memorial United Methodist Church in Lyons, Rev. Joel Rathbun, officiating.

BURIAL WITH MILITARY HONORS: Lyons Cemetery with Military Honors by Robert Klase VFW Post No. 7998 and Harvey Lenig American Legion Post No. 83 of Lyons.
