Harold Lee “Swede” Hawkins, age 85, of Oakland, Nebraska passed away December 11, 2017, at Nebraska Medicine in Omaha, Nebraska. Memorial services will be on Saturday, December 16, 2017, 1 p.m. at the Oakland-Craig Elementary School Gymnasium with Military Honors to be be conducted following the service. Burial will be held in the Oakland Cemetery, Oakland, Nebraska at a later date. Memorial visitation will be held Friday from 5-7 p.m. with family receiving friends, at First United Methodist Church in Oakland. Memorials are suggested to the family for later designation. Harold Lee “Swede” Hawkins was born to Harold and Ileta (Kate DeVasure) Hawkins September 19, 1932, on a rural farm outside of Tekamah, Nebraska. Attending grade school in Decatur, he moved to Tekamah in the seventh grade where he remained through his high school graduation. He then attended Doane College, where he played football. In January 1951, he enlisted in the Marine Corps. He was deployed to Pusan, Korea as a soldier in the Korean War. On June 14, 1952 he sustained injuries from a grenade blast that resulted in his discharge in January 1954.

Upon returning to the United States, he enrolled at Midland College, met MaryAnn Wesely, later playing football in the fall. They married June 4, 1955. After marriage and graduation, he taught school for 37 years (8 years at Creighton and 29 years at Oakland/Oakland-Craig), retiring in 1994.

Over the years, he was a teacher, coach, athletic director and principal. Swede was probably most proud of his successful career as a golf coach, which will culminate in his induction into the NHSACA Hall of Fame in June 2018.

Swede and MaryAnn enjoyed their later years exploring the 50 states, visiting National Parks, the Czech Republic and enjoying their ever-growing family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings: Betty, Gerald, Tom, Jean and Patty.

He is survived by his wife, MaryAnn; five children: Kirk (Gail) Hawkins, Carol (Dave) Krick, Robin Hawkins, Lee Anne (Brad) Simpson and Spencer (Laura) Hawkins all of Omaha; three sisters, Ila (Gary) Davis of Springfield, Harriet (Pat) Schafer of Tekamah and Peg (Randy) Doncheski of Lincoln; 13 grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Katherine Ann Peterson was born to Bruce Arnold and Marlene Ann (Gibbs) Peterson on June 16, 1957 in Oakland, Nebraska. She passed away August 20, 2017 at CHI Bergan Mercy Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of 60 years.

Kathy attended country school and graduated from Oakland-Craig High School in 1975. She lived in Lincoln, Nebraska and Minnesota before returning to Oakland in 2010. She opened Itty Bitty Store in Oakland and Unique and Unusual Finds in West Point, Nebraska.

She was preceded in death by her father, Bruce Peterson.

She is survived by her mother, Marlene Peterson; brothers, Bruce Alan of West Point, Terry of Foristell, MO; nieces, Lindzey and Cheyenne, nephew, Dalton.

A private family service will be held.

Burial is in the Craig Cemetery.

Jeanette M. (Carson) Johnson, 84, of Oakland NE


Jeanette M. (Carson) Johnson was born to Glen and Mabel (Olson) Carson in Lyons, Nebraska on February 3, 1933. She passed away August 16, 2017 at Premier Estates of Fremont in Fremont, Nebraska, at the age of 84 years.

Jeanette fell in love and married Dale Oscar Johnson on October 12, 1950 at the Methodist Parsonage in Oakland, Nebraska. Together they built their lives in Oakland and raised a family of four daughters: Kristie, Janelle, Marla and Lynnette. Jeanette and Dale spent 66 years of married life alongside each other.

Jeanette worked at the Oakland Hospital and later assisted Dr. Hadley at his office in Lyons for many years. Following retirement, Jeanette was co-owner of Dime Store Days Antique Mall in Fremont before retiring again in 2012. She was a devoted volunteer at the Golden Oaks Senior Center and a longtime member of First United Methodist Church in Oakland.

Jeanette never stopped moving and doing. She was widely renowned and deeply loved for her extraordinary Swedish rye bread, raisin cream pie and fried chicken. She made certain that Dale’s annual garden produce was canned, frozen or put on the table as part of a garden-fresh summer supper. Christmas at the Johnsons’ was celebrated each year with Jeanette’s Swedish Rice Ring, Ostkaka, and her Swedish Coffee Ring.

Jeanette was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband, Dale; brothers: Lloyd, Donald, Jack, Kenley and three infant brothers; sisters: Mary Lou, Julia, Opal and Joyce.

She is survived by her adoring daughters: Kristie (Patrick) Peters of Crystal, MN, Janelle (Tom) Van Scoy, Marla Peterson and Lynnette (Curt) Goracke all of Fremont; granddaughters: Heather (Robert) Martin-Batt, Brooke Goracke, Haley (Tom) Goracke-Fruen, Emily Perina, Celia (Jake) Gant; grandsons: Jason (Darcy) Martin, Seth Perina, Andrew (Brittney) Perina, Spencer (JoDee) Goracke, Joseph Peters; twelve great grandchildren: Josh, Gabi, Devin, Ellis, Carter, Reese, Cain, James, Drew, Addison, Rayne, Mahz; brother-in-law, Jim (Jo) Johnson; sister-in-law, Bonnie (Morris) Fleischman; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends.

Mildred “Millie” Sandquist, age 94, of Oakland, Nebraska passed away Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at Oakland Mercy Hospital in Oakland.  Funeral services will be on Tuesday, May 30, 2017,  at 10 a.m. at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oakland.  Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery.  Visitation will be held Monday, 5-7 pm, with family receiving friends at Pelan Funeral Services in Oakland.  There will be an Eastern Star Service at 7 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home. Mildred “Millie” (Johnson) Sandquist was born September 12, 1922 in Craig, Nebraska, to Elmer and Clara (Pearson) Johnson.  Millie received her education at District #55 Prairie View School through sixth grade. Millie and her family moved to Oakland in 1933, where she graduated from high school in 1939. After graduation, Millie worked in Omaha, Nebraska at the Omaha Grain Exchange, and later at Dunn & Bradstreet. In 1942, Millie returned to Oakland, and went to work for Holmquist Grain and Lumber where she worked for 48 years before retiring on June 30, 1989.

On January 12, 1957, Millie was united in marriage to Ellert “Sank” Sandquist at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oakland, NE, and spent their entire married lives as part of the Oakland community.

Millie was a lifelong member at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, where she served on church council and in many other capacities. She was a member of Ryan V.F.W. Auxiliary serving as president, and as district and departmental officer. Millie also was a member of the Oakland Housing Board, American Legion Auxiliary, and affiliated with the Order of the Eastern Star and was a Past Worthy Matron. Millie loved to golf, play cards, and entertain her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ellert; sister, Ferne Rogers; brothers-in-law, Norman Rogers, Raymond Sandquist and Warren Nelson; sister-in-law, Lucille Nelson; nephew, Dan Nelson.

Millie is survived by her sisters-in-law, Lu Sandquist of Lincoln, NE, Muriel Nelson of Sioux City, IA; nieces, Linda (Robert) Schnell of Tekamah, NE, Katheryn Sandquist of Lincoln, Lori (Dick) Salem of Sioux City; nephews, Rex (Mary) Rogers of Tekamah, Reg Nelson of Oakland, Doug (Linda) Sandquist of Omaha, Scott (Amy) Sandquist of Lincoln, Kurt (Ginger) Sandquist of Lincoln, John (Kathleen) Nelson of New York, NY, Ward (Paula) Nelson of Ankeny, IA; several great nephews, nieces, cousins and special friends.
