Ada Belle (Palmer) Hansen, 95, of Tekamah NE


Ada Belle (Palmer) Hansen was born September 29, 1920 in Tekamah, Nebraska, to Otto and Ethel (Choate) Palmer. She passed away Saturday, June 11, 2016 at the Golden Living Center in Tekamah.

Ada attended elementary school at Arizona Center District #3 near her farm home northeast of Tekamah and graduated from Tekamah High School in 1937. She and Roger Hansen were married February 11, 1939. They had three sons: Larry Eugene, Randall Clark and Robert Kent. They farmed until 1960 whenthey moved into Tekamah.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Magnolia Rebekah Lodge and served on the Board of the Chatt Senior Center. She worked at the switchboard of Northwestern Bell Telephone until they went to dial phones. She was the Deputy Burt County Assessor in 1967 and later became County Assessor until 1969. She then became the office manager at Burt County Public Power and retired on January 1, 1988.

She enjoyed china painting, bowling and playing bridge. In later years, she enjoyed her association with friends at the Chatt Senior Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Roger; sisters, Marietta Hennig and Vera Baker; and infant great-grandson, Brayden Tracy.

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law: Larry (Sandra) Hansen of Fremont, NE, Randy (Mary) Hansen of Spokane, WA, Kent (Charlotte) Hansen of Tekamah; niece, Donna (Hennig) Yergler of Ankeny, IA; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren.

The Memorial Service is Mon., June 20th at 10;00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Tekamah. There won’t be a visitation.

There will be a private family burial.

Memorials suggested to the Orville and Willa Chatt Senior Citizen Center.

Ruth S Petersen, 99 years, a long-time resident of Tekamah, Nebraska, passed away Friday, June 10, 2016 at Brighton Gardens in Omaha.

A Memorial Service will be held Thurs., June 16th at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Tekamah.

Burial is in the Tekamah Cemetery.

Rebecca Sue Rocca (Becky), 54, of the Tekamah NE Decatur NE Area


Rebecca Sue Rocca (Becky) was born September 28, 1961 in Blair Nebraska to Neal and Gay White. On Friday, May 27, 2016, at the age of 54 she passed to her heavenly home when she was taken suddenly from her friends and family in an auto accident.

Becky spent her childhood on farms located between Tekamah and Decatur, Nebraska. She attended elementary school at School District 6R, a country school located between Tekamah and Decatur, then transferred to Tekamah-Herman High School in Tekamah, graduating in 1979. She continued a higher education degree at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, followed by further education at University of Nebraska at Omaha, graduating in May of 1984.

Becky was involved in many school activities including cheerleading, singing and band. Outside of school she was involved in 4-H where she participated in showing horses, cattle, cooking, sewing and singing. Becky was passionate about horses and showed her Appaloosas Jack, Jane and Annie, in breed shows at the National Level.

Becky met Martin J Rocca “Marty” in college and they married August 6, 1982 making their home on the family farm between Tekamah and Decatur. They were business partners as well as life partners working in insurance, construction and farming. As an adult Becky loved Harley motorcycles, farming, her nieces and nephew and her dogs

Becky was preceded in death by her father, Neal White; infant brother, Stephen Michael White; grandparents, Clarence (Peeler) and Edith Kelly and John and Eva White; uncles, Clarence Kelly Jr and Dale White.

Becky is survived by her husband, Martin Rocca of Decatur; mother, Gay White of Tekamah, brother, Wade White of Oklahoma City, OK; sister, Janelle White and brother in law John Guisto from Tucson AZ; nieces and nephews, Kelly Dyvig and husband Cory Dyvig of Edmond OK, Matlock White of Oklahoma City, OK, Kasey Reyes and husband Jordan Reyes of Guthrie OK; and great niece and nephews, Ashlyn, Blake and Tyler Dyvig; many aunts, uncles and cousins also mourn her loss.

The Memorial Service is Fri., June 10th at 2:00 p.m. at the Tekamah City Auditorium.

Irene Joy Nordstrom, 71, of Tekamah NE


Irene Joy Nordstrom was born to Gerald Kenneth and Ethel Lena (Clyde) McIntosh on February 23, 1945 in Blair, Nebraska. She passed away May 30, 2016, at CHI Health Immanuel in Omaha, Nebraska, after a month-long battle due to complications from surgery.

She attended a rural school in her early years and graduated from Tekamah High School in 1963. Arnold “Arnie” Nordstrom, Jr. and Irene were united in marriage on May 3, 1964. Born to this union were three daughters. Irene and Arnie were empty-nesters for just a few years before they became the legal guardians of 3 very young children. They continued to generously open their doors to several other family members in times of need. They were very close to their many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Irene worked as the office manager off and on for all the years they owned a local TV and appliance store. She had a deep abiding love for Jesus Christ and a driving desire to serve the Lord. One of Irene’s greatest joys was teaching songs to children during her community’s Vacation Bible School and at Sunday School. She helped with MOP’s as a teacher and also taught piano lessons. Over the last several years, Irene has volunteered to manage the Tekamah Food Pantry. She loved her Bible Study groups too. She was well-known for her bright smile and her talkative warmth. She had a real gift for encouraging others. She was a loving soul, full of orneriness with a twinkle in her eye.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents and step-father, George Metzler, Sr; sisters, Geraldine Metzler and Gale Macdonald; brother, Gerald McIntosh; sister-in-law, Ulrike McIntosh; niece, Amber Wood; nephew Tatum McIntosh; her double cousin, Walter McIntosh.

Survivors include her husband, Arnold; daughters and sons-in-laws, Laura (Daniel) Kelley of Waco, NE, Brenda (Mark) Nelson of Elkhorn, NE, Trina (Warren) Wetzel of Tekamah; their guardian children, Faith Teneyck, Michael Metzler, Holly (Mike) Martin, all of Tekamah; eight grandchildren, Jacqueline, Nicole, Weston, Nicholas, Gregory, Jessica, Gavin and Jordan; two step-grandchildren, Kevin and Erin; four honorary grandchildren, Brayten, Mark, Jacob and Joseph, five great grandchildren, Lacey, Benjamin, Brialynn, Adrian and Maddelynn; step-mother, Erna Hawley of Tekamah; sisters, Sherry Kocher of Elkhorn, Jeanette Brooks of Cozad, NE and Debi (Darrel) Boyce of Herman, NE; brothers, George McIntosh of Lincoln and George (Sonny) Metzler, Jr. of Tekamah; many beloved nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Visitation is Thurs., June 2nd from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Pelan Funeral Services in Tekamah. Family will be receiving friends.

The Funeral Service is Fri., June 3rd at 2:00 p.m. at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Tekamah. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Burial is in the Tekamah Cemetery.

Jerald “Jerry” Lloyd Palmer, 73, of Tekamah NE


Jerald “Jerry” Lloyd Palmer was born to Homer Virgil Palmer and Bettie Holiday Cowell February 1, 1943 in Corpus Christi, Texas. He passed away Sunday, May 8, 2016 in Tekamah, Nebraska, at the age of 73 years.

Jerry spent most of his younger years in Burlingame, Kansas. He loved the game of chess, and became a state champion. He later moved on to Alhambra, California. He graduated from Mark Keppel High School and was a member of the tennis team.

Jerry was united in marriage to Margarita Burgos January 20, 1968 in Las Vegas, Nevada. To this union two children were born; daughter, Cherish and son, David.

On March 25, 1992, in Reno, Nevada, Jerry married Cheryl Pickell. With this union, he became step father to Richard, Christina and James Pickell, and they became a combined family.

Throughout the years, Jerry worked various jobs; he was a shipping clerk, part of the crew on a banana boat and a roofer, just to name a few. He found his calling when he started driving truck 33 years ago, and made Tekamah his home. He never retired; he worked until 6 weeks before he passed.

Jerry always excelled in whatever he did. He loved the ocean, and taught himself to sail. He enjoyed his family, and getting together for family gatherings. He just loved life. Jerry enjoyed hearing other people’s stories, and telling his own.

He was a great Nebraska fan, and would stop and watch the games when he was on the road. His newest passion was Words with Friends, and of course, he was seldom beat.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Bryce Palmer.

He is survived by his wife, Cheryl of Tekamah; brother, Robert Palmer of Carbondale, KS; children, Cherish (Charlie) Lyles and David Palmer all of Indianapolis, IN, Richard Pickell, Jr. and James (Launa) Pickell all of Decatur, NE, Christina Gray of Tekamah; beloved grandchildren, Cassie and Camille Brodrick, Charles Lyles, David Michael, Joseph, Nick and Zach Palmer, Britany Crosby, Kelsey Gray, Ryan Gray, Tyler Johnson, Alyssa Johnson, Austin Pickell, Keith Pickell, Andrew Pickell.

A Memorial Service will be held on Sat., May 21st at 1:00 p.m. at Jerry’s residence in Tekamah NE.

Margaret Francis “Connie” Vernon, 83, of Tekamah NE


Margaret Francis “Connie” Vernon was born to Ray and Myrtle (Staples) McConnaha May 8, 1932 in Omaha, Nebraska. She passed away Sunday, May 1, 2016, at her residence in Tekamah, Nebraska, at the age of 83 years.

Connie grew up on a farm west of Herman, Nebraska, attending the New England School. She lived with her grandmother in order to attend and graduate from Blair High School. Following graduation, she attended the St. Joseph School of Nursing in Omaha, graduating with an LPN Degree.

After college, she married Keith Fichter, and they resided briefly in Omaha before moving to Denver, Colorado. This marriage produced four daughters; Kristy, Karen, Kathy and Michelle. Connie moved from Denver to Anchorage, Alaska, where she served as a dispatcher for the Anchorage Police and Fire Departments. She took further training and also became the state’s first female Fire Marshall. In Anchorage, she married Alan Vernon. From Anchorage, she moved to Honolulu, Hawaii, where she worked for a private company responsible for training the state’s Emergency Medical Technicians. Following retirement, she moved to Tekamah to help care for her mother, and began work at the Burt County Museum and the Plaindealer Newspaper.

Connie was an avid sports fan, who split her baseball loyalty between the Cardinals and Cubs. However, she maintained undivided football loyalty with the Pittsburgh Steelers. She loved to travel, and over the course of her retirement, visited much of the United States, England, France, Abu Dhabi, Spain, Curacao, Canada, Mexico, Italy and China. Her other love was animals, especially her cats. She also devoted much of her time to feeding every wild thing in the neighborhood from deer to birds and rabbits.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father; sister, Betty; daughter, Kristy.

She is survived by three of her daughters, Karen, Kathy and Michelle; a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren; brother, Wendell (Judy) VMcConnaha; a large number of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Joe Roh Jr., 92, of Tekamah NE


Joe Roh, Jr. was born to Joseph and Mary (Shimerka) Roh on June 16, 1923 in Abie, Nebraska. He passed away on April 28, 2016, in Tekamah, Nebraska at the age of 92.

Joe grew up on a dairy farm in Abie, as one of twelve children, and attended high school in Crete, Nebraska. Joe was united in marriage to Alice Hobza on August 29, 1951, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Wahoo, Nebraska. Shortly after, Joe graduated from the University of Nebraska in June of 1953. He and Alice relocated to Broken Bow, Nebraska where he started his career as an assistant county agent. In 1955, Joe became the Burt County Agent and served in this capacity for the next 18 years. He joined the First National Bank in 1972 as an ag loan officer and worked there, off and on, until his retirement in 2012.

Joe was very active in the Tekamah and Burt County communities for a number of years. He enjoyed working with the Burt County Fair Board and was an active Lions Club member. Joe was also an active parishioner of St. Patrick’s Church in Tekamah, and previously served on the church council.

Joe’s love of his family was truly the passion of his life. He would make family gatherings and activities a priority, even up until his last days. His Czech heritage and affection for it were something that he passed along to his children and grandchildren. Joe also loved fishing, gardening, crop touring, and puttering around his vast yard.

Survivors include his wife, Alice; son, Joe (Lynn) Roh; daughters, Peggy (Steve) Nelson, Marcia (Thad) Eaton, Christi (Miles) Tommeraasen, Jenifer (Joe) Milone, and Becky (Joe Bacon) Roh; 14 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one brother, Father Raymond Roh; numerous nieces and nephews.
