Dylan Jean Parsons, infant daughter of Shannon Parsons and Cheri Doyal, went to heaven on Wednesday, August 12, 2015 at Oakland Mercy Hospital in Oakland, Nebraska. She was born on June 30, 2015 in Pender, Nebraska and resided with her parents and siblings in Lyons, Nebraska.

Survivors include her parents; brother, Isiah; sisters, Madison and Jasmyne all of Lyons; grandparents, Charlie and Peggy Smith, of Beemer, NE, Bob and Lynette Paine of Woodbine, IA; great grandma, Margaret Schultz of Beemer, NE; a host of family.

MEMORIAL SERVICE: Monday, August 17, 2015, 11:00 a.m. at Beemer Mennonite Church in Beemer, Nebraska.

Mary Ann Rose (Cerny) Petersen, 90, of Lyons NE


Mary Ann Rose (Cerny) Petersen was born on September 4, 1924 to Frank and Marie (Studnicka) Cerny in rural Dodge, Nebraska. She passed away on July 22, 2015, at the age of 90 years, at Oakland Mercy Hospital in Oakland, Nebraska after a brief illness.

Mary Ann attended a rural school northeast of Dodge. In the 1930s the family moved northeast of Scribner, Nebraska, where she graduated from Scribner High School with the class of 1942. During World War II, Mary Ann was employed by the Rogers Tent and Awning Company in Fremont, Nebraska, making army tents for soldiers. After the war, she was employed at Fremont Guide and Tribune, and later worked as a receptionist for Drs. Van Metre and Hill in Fremont.

Mary Ann married Leeby R. Petersen of Lyons, Nebraska on January 28, 1948. He was the son of Hans and Christine (Koch) Petersen. They made the Lyons area their home, farming in the Liberty area, west of town.

Later in 1968, Mary Ann worked in Lyons at the Logan Valley Manor as an LPN, until she retired in 1981. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, UMW and VFW Auxiliaries, Liberty Club, Westside Aid and the Even Dozen Extension Club. Mary Ann enjoyed painting, gardening, crocheting, embroidery and collecting poems. One of the greatest enjoyments, later in life, was playing dominos with family and friends, and she usually won.

Mary Ann was preceded in death by her husband, Leeby (1985); sister, Evelyn Legband; brothers, Alvin and Marvin Cerny; seven brothers-in-law; eight sisters-in-law.

She is survived by her three children, Mary (Robert) Leifert of West Richland, WA, Jean (Craig) Novak of Loveland, CO, Richard (Lana) Petersen of Lyons; 12 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, a host of very close friends and relatives.

Mary Ann enjoyed life fully to the end. She will be remembered for her loving and kind-hearted ways with all people that she came in contact with. Mary Ann will be remembered for her love of life.

FUNERAL SERVICE: Friday, July 24, 2015 10:30 a.m. at Memorial United Methodist Church in Lyons.

VISITATION: Thursday 5:30-8 p.m., with family receiving friends at Pelan Funeral Services Lyons. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to services at the church.

Shirley A. McAllister, 83, of Fairbury NE Formerly of Tekamah NE


Shirley A. McAllister was born September 27, 1931 at the family home in West Point, Nebraska, the daughter of Harvey R. and Maude E. (Crist) Ellenberger. She died Saturday, July 18, 2015 at Heritage Care Center in Fairbury, Nebraska.

Shirley graduated from Tekamah High School in 1949, and while raising a family and working she graduated summa cum laude from Dana College, Blair, Nebraska in 1969.

Shirley was united in marriage to L. Dale McAllister in October, 1950. They lived on a farm near Craig, Nebraska for 51 years, before retiring to Tekamah.

Shirley was an elementary teacher for many years starting in Craig, Nebraska, subsequently at Tekamah-Herman Schools. She eventually earned certifications in Special Education and became a professor at Dana College in Blair where she taught Educational Psychology. She retired from teaching in 1996 to spend more time with family and to travel with Dale.

Memberships included First Presbyterian Church, where she was active in many ways, Chapter DC PEO, Order of Eastern Star, book club, Clio club and she enjoyed her Chatt Center friends and had served as Chatt Center Treasurer.

Preceding her in death were her husband, parents, sister and brother-in-law Phyllis and Bernard Pipher, and an infant daughter Lori.

Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law: Mike and Susan McAllister of Tekamah, Tim and Deb McAllister of Fairbury; grandchildren: Dr. Charles McAllister of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, Jennifer and Jim Flak of New York City, Cristy and Aaron Fryzek of Lincoln, Jake and Katie McAllister of Elkhorn and their son Owen, Shirley’s great grandchild.

Doris E. Kjeldgaard, 89, of Tekamah NE


Doris E. Kjeldgaard, age 89, of Tekamah, Nebraska passed away Tuesday, July 7, 2015 at Golden Living Center in Tekamah.  Memorial services will be on Saturday, July 11, 2015, 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Tekamah, Nebraska with burial in the Tekamah Cemetery.  There is no visitation.  Memorials may be directed to the family for designation at a later time.  Pelan Funeral Services in Tekamah is in charge of arrangements.

Doris Esther Kjeldgaard was born November 4, 1925 at the family home in the Lake Quinnebaugh-Arizona Township area in Tekamah, Nebraska to Joseph Sih and Minnie Esther (Moffitt) King, the third oldest of eight children.

On May 4, 1946, Doris was united in marriage to Neil Duane Kjeldgaard at the United Methodist Church in Tekamah. Her brother, Leroy King, and her sister-in-law, Dena Kjeldgaard, stood up with them. Into this union were born a daughter, Judy Elaine, born on March 2, 1947 and a son, John Eric, born on March 1, 1951.

Doris was an avid homemaker, but she did join the workforce when her husband Neil was hospitalized at the Veterans Hospital for treatment of TB in the early 1950s. She worked for over 15 years at the Kerwin Clothing Store in Tekamah, as well as a few years at Kolterman’s Five and Dime Store in Tekamah. Doris and Neil enjoyed many years of camping, attending music festivals, dancing, playing cards and gardening. She also enjoyed quilting, cross-stitching, collecting teddy bears and being with her family and friends.

She was a 50-year-plus member of the United Methodist Church of Tekamah. She was also a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary and the F.O.E. Auxiliary in Tekamah.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Neil; parents; brothers, Leroy King, Kenneth “Doc” King; sister, Madeline Hardy.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Judy (Jim) Grothe; son and daughter-in-law, John (Elizabeth) Kjeldgaard all of Tekamah; sisters and brother-in-law Betty Buddecke of Grand Island, NE, Mary Syverson of Harrison, AR, Marilyn Joan (Vernon) Maxwell of Tekamah; brother and sister-in-law, Verlin “Bud” (Mary) King of Tekamah; sisters-in-law Sally King of Tekamah, Dena Carlson of Oakland, NE; grandchildren, Christine Bruce of Tekamah, Melinda Bruce of Bennington, NE, Chad (Michelle) Kjeldgaard of Walla Walla, WA, Brandi Kjeldgaard of Omaha, NE; great grandchildren Jennifer (Zach) Peterson and James Bruce all of Tekamah, Colton Bruce of Fort Dodge, IA, Tyson Bruce of Bennington, Dominic, Alex, Josephine and Aaron Kjeldgaard all of Walla Walla; great-great grandchildren Cody and Cole Peterson both of Tekamah; many nieces and nephews.

Gary R. Strong, 75, of Tekamah NE


Leslie W. and Mildred (Sterns) Strong were having a Sunday family meal on June 9, 1940. Gary R. Strong was unexpectedly born at his Uncle Charles and Aunt Ruth Strong’s farm in Atkinson, Nebraska that day. Gary died at Memorial Community Hospital in Blair, Nebraska on June 27, 2015, at the age of 75, after receiving wonderful care for over a year at the Golden Living Center in Tekamah, Nebraska.

In the early forties, the Strong family moved to Omaha, Nebraska, where Gary graduated from Omaha Tech High in 1959. He married Fran Method on April 27, 1963. Into this union, Gary’s son Chris immediately made them a family of three. A year later, twins Teresa and Gary Ray Strong II were born in Omaha. In 1972, the family moved to Tekamah.

Gary operated a crane for over 20 years at Cargo Carriers in Omaha. For 25 years, Gary was a welder at Con-E-Co in Blair, retiring in December of 2005. In addition, Gary also worked at side jobs, helping others fix broken things. At home, Gary loved to tinker in his garage or remodel his house. He was a magnificent craftsman who could build or fix almost anything. On most any project, one small piece would be left flawed or deliberately omitted, his personal stamp.

He was preceded in death by his son, Chris; father, Leslie Strong; mother, Mildred Pride; stepfather, Floyd Pride Sr.; brother, Donald Strong; sister-in-law, Nancy (Method) Dobberthien.

Survivors include his wife, Fran of Tekamah; daughter, Teresa (Mark) Strong-Hilger of Omaha; son, Gary (Marisol) Strong II of Midwest City, OK; five grandchildren, Nash and Clara Zahm, Eddy, Michelle and Dexter Strong; brothers, Roland (Shirley) Strong and Floyd Pride Jr. of Omaha; sister, Sandra (Larry) Larsen of Blair; aunt, Doris Moss of Sioux City, IA; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

William “Bill” Lester Bowden, 92, of Lincoln NE


William “Bill” Lester Bowden was born to Clarence Miles and Hazel Charlotte (Lester) Bowden April 5, 1923 on a farm two miles west of Tekamah, Nebraska. He passed away June 27, 2015 at The Legacy Retirement Community in Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of 92 years.

He was four years old when his mother passed away, and was raised by his grandparents, Eli and Lenora Bowden. He attended kindergarten through high school in Tekamah, graduating with the class of 1941.

During his freshman year in high school, he met Betty Lou Hart of Herman, Nebraska. They were married June 25, 1944 in Shiloh, North Carolina, while Bill was stationed in Elizabeth City, North Carolina at the US Coast Guard Air Station. He worked for Consumers Public Power (now NPPD) for 34 years, retiring in 1981. After retirement they moved to a farm near Adams, Nebraska to watch their grandchildren grow up.

Bill served in the United States Coast Guard from September 5, 1941 to October 27, 1945 – four years, one month and 22 days, as he liked to say. After his discharge, he attended radio/TV technology school in Washington, DC, and returned to Tekamah in the spring of 1947. He was a member of the Tekamah American Legion Post #15, VFW Post #3304, and was a 60+ year member of the Masonic Lodge in Tekamah.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents and parents.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; two daughters, Janice Bowden of Tekamah, Sharon (Bill) Hitzeman of Lincoln; two sisters, Joan Stenson and Carol (Larry) Moyer of Colme, SD; grandchildren, Ryon (Maggie) Hitzeman of Salina, KS, Annie (Shawn) Othmer of Tecumseh, NE; great grandchildren, Austin and Olivia Hitzeman, Emma, Sydnie and Shawna Othmer; numerous nieces and nephews.

Raymond “Pete” Seymour, 83, of Decatur NE


Raymond “Pete” Seymour was born in Decatur, Nebraska on January 14, 1932 to Ray and Lucielle (Ball) Seymour. He got the nickname from his dad. He was the only boy in a family of four sisters; Marquetta, Mary, Joan and Patsy. Pete transitioned to Heaven on Saturday, June 27, 2015, following 83 well-lived years.

After Pete graduated from Decatur High School, he began working in Walthill, Nebraska at
McGregor Lumber Company. He married his first wife, Roylene (Burkhart), and joined the Air Force as a Sgt. Air Policeman, serving from 1951-1958.

Pete and Royal had their first daughter, Theresa, while being stationed in Fort Benning, Georgia. Five more children were born to this union, a son, Timothy and daughters, Tamara “Angie”, Rita, Rhonda and Jacklyn.

Pete became an entrepreneur in the real estate business in Sioux City, Iowa, owning several homes and duplexes that he remodeled and rented out. He was in the fix it, flip it, and rent it business before it became popular on HGTV.

Pete also worked for IMT Insurance Company from 1974-1991. He started out as a Claims
Adjuster, and ended his career as the Regional Claims Manager for Sioux City, Sioux
Falls, South Dakota and Omaha, Nebraska.

For those in the area that love watching stock car races, they may also remember Pete as the
Announcer at Interstate Speedway in Jefferson, South Dakota. Those traveling through Decatur remember Pete wearing his Cornhusker baseball hat while collecting money for the toll bridge that unites Iowa and Nebraska. Pete was also a member of the Iowa Air National Guard 185th unit in Sioux City, where he served as a reservist for 12 years in the military police.

In his 50s, Pete met and married his current wife, Janey (Kellogg) Seymour, and they shared 25 years together. Three more daughters became a part of his life, Lana, Becky and
Jennifer.

Pete and Janey were introduced by Janey’s mother at the Eagles Club, and they fell in love
dancing together. They spent many years square dancing, and traveling throughout the country
to visit family and friends. They retired to Decatur, and bought a second home in Texas, that they
enjoyed while escaping Iowa and Nebraska winters.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Lucielle; sister, Patsy Glassmeyer; step-son Daryl French; grandson, Trey Wheeler.

He is survived by his wife, Janey; children, Theresa (Smail) Setka, Tim Seymour, Angie (Dean) Weaver, Rita Seymour, Rhonda (Sherwood) Gross, Jackie Mahaney; step-daughters, Becky (Ryan) Wheeler, Lana (Tom) Lambert, Jennifer (Justin) VanHorn; sisters, Mary, Joan, Marquetta; 17 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren.
