Dian Fay Gammel Nelson, 73, of Lyons NE


Dian Fay Gammel Nelson was born December 22, 1941 to Paul McGrew and Helen Wilson Gammel. She passed away unexpectedly on the morning of Monday, June 22, 2015, at the age of 73 years.

Dian attended District 22 country school, also known as Crannell School or Little Red Schoolhouse, located southwest of Tekamah, Nebraska. She graduated from Tekamah High School in 1959. She attended Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado.

On June 15, 1961 she married Gilbert R. Johnson of Fremont, Nebraska. To this union were born three children, Gilbert, deSilva and Cody. She later married Randy Nelson in Craig, Nebraska, where they resided before moving to Tekamah.

Dian grew up on a farm southwest of Tekamah, where she helped with all farm chores. She excelled at riding and training horses. Dian traveled the Midwest Barrel Racing circuit for several years in the late 1950s, and was Casey Tibbs Rodeo Queen. Dian always chose a two-lane blacktop road over an interstate highway. She owned and operated an 18 wheeler, but could not parallel park a car. For a time, she drove a school bus for Oakland-Craig Schools and was an EMT on Craig’s Rescue Squad. She was a member if Chapter 131 Order of the Eastern Star – Tekamah.

Dian was confident in her manner, glamorous in her appearance, and relentless in her nature. She was a devoted friend and mother, and a dedicated big sister; her sense of humor and insatiable quest for the next road trip will be missed.

Dian was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Thomas Gammel; son, Cody Johnson; son-in-law, William Magill; aunts, Alice Wilson Gammel, Darlene Gammel Warren; uncles Charles Gammel, Keith Gammel.

Survivors include children, Gilbert (Rae) Johnson of Stapleton, NE, Dee Magill of Herman, NE; sister, Jean (Don) Neary of Tekamah; cousin, Celia Gammel of Tacoma, WA; friend and partner, Harvey “Chuck” Lydick of Lyons, NE; eight grandchildren, Gilbert R. Johnson II and Ross Johnson of Stapleton, Mason, Colton and Taylor Magill of Herman, Martin (Katherine) Johnson of Pittsburg, PA, Jessica Johnson of Herman, Joshua Johnson of Mountain View, WY, Audrey Rose Johnson of Kalispell, MT; five great grandchildren, Braxton Magill, Eleanor and Addison Johnson and Brooks Deets Owens, who came into this world the same day Grandma Di departed. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.

Elizabeth Ann “Betty” Coffman, 81, of Tekamah NE


Elizabeth Ann “Betty” Coffman, 81 years of Tekamah, Nebraska passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 20th at the Golden Living Center in Tekamah after a lingering illness.

Betty was born on August 18, 1933 in Tekamah, Nebraska, the second of three children, to George and Mildred (Marshall) Plummer.  She received her education in Tekamah, graduating from Tekamah High School in 1951.

On March 4, 1951, Betty married Robert E. Coffman. To this union two children were born; Dan and Denise. They resided on a farm north of Tekamah in Riverside Township for 24 years until moving into town in 1975.

Betty was a devoted wife for 64 years and loving mother, who took joy in helping Bob on the farm driving tractors and grain trucks while also keeping active in her children’s lives. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Tekamah and served as the church organist for many years, playing at Sunday services, weddings and funerals. As a member of PW, (Presbyterian Women), Betty worked with the Hospitality Group preparing food and working in the kitchen for dinners and funerals held at church.  Betty’s musical talent kept her busy as the organist for the Order of Eastern Star and Job’s Daughters for many years as well.

Betty also worked for Burt County 6R Country School, Farm Bureau Insurance and Burt County Bank Insurance Company in Tekamah.

Over the years, Betty has enjoyed bowling league, raising a large garden and canning.  She was an excellent cook and baker, loved to read books and her card game of choice was ‘Pitch’.  After she and Bob retired from farming in 1992, they started to enjoy traveling to different places, most especially to South Padre Island, Texas where, for over 20 years, they would spend wonderful winters together. During her lifetime, she has enjoyed many friendships both near and far.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Robert and Jim Plummer; her beloved daughter, Denise Trumbo.

Betty is survived by her husband, Robert “Bob” Coffman of Tekamah; son, Dan (Jeanine) Coffman of Streamwood, Ill; son-in-law Gary Trumbo of Fremont, NE; three grandchildren, Kecia Zimmerman of Omaha, NE, Sarah (Matt) Lieber of Lincoln, NE, Danielle Coffman of Streamwood, IL; three great grandchildren, Hunter and Hailee Zimmerman, Logan Lieber; brothers-in-law, Donald (Dolores) Coffman, Ed (Barb) Coffman all of Tekamah.

MEMORIAL SERVICE: Thursday, June 25, 2015, 10:30 am at the First Presbyterian Church in Tekamah.

Delores J. (Swanson) Danielson, 86, of Oakland NE


Delores J. (Swanson) Danielson, was born to Clarence and Blanche (Johnson) Swanson on November 18, 1928 in Oakland, Nebraska. She passed away June 17, 2015 at Oakland Heights Nursing Home, in Oakland at the age of 86 years.

Delores attended Pleasant Way Rural School and graduated from Oakland High School. She graduated from Dana College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education.

On May 25, 1956 Delores was married to Kenneth Danielson at First Covenant Church in Oakland. This was the same church in which Delores had been baptized and later confirmed. They shared their lives on the farm, and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, before Kenneth passed away on June 29, 2007.  Delores moved to Oakland Heights Assisted Living, and later to Oakland Heights Nursing Home.

Delores managed the Ladies’ Style Shop in Oakland during her early years. She also was an active rural school teacher for many years, and had fond memories of many of her students. After retiring from teaching, she managed the Golden Oaks for several years.

She enjoyed belonging to Hooper Saddle Club, and went on many saddle club rides. She loved holidays, and was a collector of Hallmark Christmas ornaments. Her nieces and nephews loved to stay at her home, as she always served Swedish Pancakes for breakfast. She was a good supporter of Oakland-Craig sports, following all the games and activities.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Kenneth; brothers, Donald and Harlan Swanson; sister-in-law, DonnaVee Swanson; nephew, Michael Cull.

She is survived by sisters-in-law, Mylet Swanson of Ralston, NE, Norma (Glenn) Cull of Oakland, Kathryn (Stan) Granatowicz of Omaha, NE; nephews, Keith, Scott, Steve and Joe Swanson, Todd Cull, Dan and Mitch Granatowicz; nieces, Kim Janssen, Joan Hellbough, Sandra Hunley, Karen Loudon; many wonderful great nieces and nephews.

FUNERAL SERVICE: Monday, June 22, 2015, 10:30 am, at Salem Covenant Church, rural Oakland

Wendy Lynn Ziemann, 41, of Oakland NE


Wendy Lynn Ziemann was born to Gwendolyn and Irvin Ziemann on December 7, 1973 in Spooner, Wisconsin. She passed away in her sleep on Thursday, June 11, 2015, at her home in Oakland, Nebraska at the age of 41 years.

As a child, Wendy moved to Florida with her parents. Wendy attended school in Lakeland.

On July 2, 1995, Wendy gave birth to a son named Corey McLaughlin.

Wendy worked from 1997-1999 as Assistant Manager at Cypress Gardens in Winter Haven, Florida.

She is survived by her son, Corey of Oakland; mother, Gwendolyn Timmons of Oakland; father, Irvin of Lakeland; sister, Heidi Creason of Bartow, FL.

Gerald F. Weeces, 87, of Tekamah NE


Gerald F. Weeces was born to Claude and Agnes (Pond) Weeces, October 6, 1927 on a farm south of Craig, Nebraska.  He passed away June 9, 2015 at CHI Health Immanuel Hospital in Omaha surrounded by loved ones.

Gerald attended country school and Craig High School, graduating in 1945, and enlisting in the Navy in September of the same year.  He had many great experiences while in the Navy with times being spent in San Francisco and Guam. He was honorably discharged in September of 1948.

1949 was the year that he met the love of his life, Yvonne Sass, at a dance in Uehling, Nebraska.  They married March 5, 1950 sharing their love of dancing, auctions, rental properties, a thrift store in Tekamah, Nebraska and their large family all during the 65 years of their marriage to one another.  The couple also embraced their life of farming, raising crops and livestock.  It was a wonderful place, this farm west and north of Tekamah, to raise their children Kathy, Mike, Carol, Tim, Annette and Mark.  The family was always happily busy.

Gerald and Yvonne eventually moved to Tekamah, and in the last couple of years, Gerald has resided at Carter Place in Blair, Nebraska, where he has been content to live his life, following a stroke many years ago. He and Yvonne made many friends there due to the loving care they received.

He is preceded in death by a son, Michael Gerald; son-in-law, Richard Drummond; parents, Claude and Agnes; in-laws, Claus and Calista Sass; sister, Elaine Weeces; brother-in-law, Arthur Sass.

Gerald is survived by his wife, Yvonne; three daughters and two sons along with their spouses, Kathy Drummond of Excelsior Springs, MO, Carol (Kent) Petersen of Blair, Annette (Lance) Bliss of Tekamah, Tim (Terri) Weeces of Minden, NE and Mark of Tekamah; grandchildren, Robin (Joe) Pond, Kristi (Kevin) Rhine, Holly (Aaron) Schleif, Gabe (Emily) Petersen, Luke (Sarah) Petersen, Hilary (Nick) Cemer, Nolan Weeces, Keith Weeces, Niles (Dawn) Bliss, Abigail Bliss, Parker Bliss, Ryan (Jilliane) Hansen, Preston Weeces.  Gerald also has 17 great grandchildren.

This man will be lovingly missed…

FUNERAL SERVICE: Monday, June 15, 2015 10:30 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Tekamah with MILITARY HONORS by VFW Bataan Post No. 3304 and American Legion LaFrenz Post No. 15.
