Marcella Hillegas, 92, of Pender NE


Marcella Marie Anna (Hansen) Hillegas, 92, of Pender, NE died on Thursday, May 05, 2016 at the Pender Community Hospital in Pender, NE. Memorial services will be held on Monday, May 9, 2015 at 2:30 p.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Pender; Pastor Miles Ruch will be officiating. The visitation will begin at 1:30 on Monday at the church. Inurnment will be in the St. Mark’s Lutheran Church Cemetery near Pender. Marcella was born on April 1, 1924 in Wayne County, Nebraska, the daughter of John and Marie (Tarnow) Hansen. She was baptized at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church and later confirmed at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. In 1942, Marcella graduated from Pender High School. On June 4, 1944, she was united in marriage to Roland F. Hillegas in Omaha, NE at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. They lived in Omaha for a short time before moving back to Thurston, NE, and eventually Pender, where they made their home until Roland died on November 3, 1995. She then moved to Kansas and later Colorado to live with her daughter and son-in-law before moving back to Pender in 2012.

Marcella was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church Ladies Aid, a Sunday school teacher, active in bible study, and was a board member for the Pender Senior Citizens Center. While living in Colorado, Marcella was active volunteering in the church thrift shop and at Hope’s Kitchen.

She is survived by her daughter, Karla (Al) Ziesemer of Omaha, NE; son, Marlin Hillegas of Oklahoma City, OK; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Marcella was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Roland; daughter, Marcie Bailey; grandson, James Ziesemer; brothers, Fred Hansen, Lyle Hansen, Elmer Hanson; and sister, Lorinda Magirl.

Leroy D. Novak, 85, of Pender, NE died on Sunday, March 20, 2016 at the Pender Community Hospital in Pender, NE. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Pender; Pastor Miles Ruch will be officiating. The visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 22, 2016 from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Pender. Burial will be in the Rosehill Cemetery of Pender. Leroy was born on December 21, 1930 near Rosalie, NE, the son of Ferdinand and Adela (Fabry) Novak. He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rosalie. In 1949, he graduated from Rosalie High School. On January 21, 1951, he was united in marriage to Joyce Engel at Immanuel Lutheran Church. To this union five children were born: Nancy, Craig, Scott, Lee and Rhonda. The couple farmed near Rosalie until retiring and moving into Pender in 2000. Two of his favorite past times including playing cards and fishing. He looked forward to his annual fishing trips with his family to Minnesota. Leroy was a gentle man, like a bull in a china shop. He was known for his generosity with friends and strangers alike. He snuck away from his family silently in his sleep, unlike his boisterous loud demeanor.

Leroy is survived by his wife Joyce of Pender, NE, children: Nancy (Larry) Nyquist of Omaha, NE; Craig (Jean) Novak of Loveland, CO; Scott (Reva) Novak of Rosalie, NE; Lee (Carrie) Novak of Hubbard, NE; Rhonda (Jason Miller) Novak Jacob of Lincoln, NE; 14 of his favorite grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters: Lillian Radtke of Hooper, NE and Francie Dorau of Omaha, NE and Dan Miller, his honorary son.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 6 brothers and 4 sisters.

Frances Anne (Prokop) Jasa, 87, of Pender, NE passed away on Saturday, March 19, 2016 at the Pender Community Hospital in Pender, NE. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church in Pender; Father Gerald Leise will be officiating. The Visitation will be held on Monday from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church with a wake service at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be in the Rosehill Cemetery of Pender. Frances was born on November 28, 1928 in Pender, NE, the daughter of Frank and Frances (Urbanec) Prokop. She attended Pender High School, graduating in 1946. On October 1, 1949, she was united in marriage to James Robert Jasa. To this union ten children were born. The couple farmed near Thurston. Frances was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church and the Thurston Legion Auxiliary. Frances enjoyed gardening, but took pride in her family, enjoying the time she was able to spend with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She is survived by her children; Robert (Robin) Jasa of Laurel, NE, Steven (Teresa) Jasa of Marlboro, MA, Jeff (Cindy) Jasa of Thurston, NE, Kevin Jasa of Estherville, IA, Karen (Don) Pearson of Pender, NE, Cheryl Hatley of Pender, NE, Kerry (Janice) Jasa of Omaha, NE, Gina (Jason) Slama of Thurston, NE and Kristine Jasa of Omaha, NE. Frances is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Gladys Prokop of Pender, NE and brother-in-law, Joseph Tesarek of Omaha, NE.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband James Robert in 2007; son, Dennis; grandson Justin Slama; brothers, Frank, Alvin, Charles, James, Edwin and Reynold and sisters, Agnes and Alice.

Evelyn Morgan, 86, of Decatur NE


Evelyn Eunice (Harmer) Morgan was born October 20, 1929 in Walthill Nebraska to Samuel Everett and Rachel (Bonham) Harmer. She passed away Thursday, February 25th, 2016 at the Pender Community Hospital in Pender. She moved with her parents to Decatur at age 2, where they built the family home. She was baptized and confirmed at United Methodist Church in Decatur, where she remained a lifetime member.

She was united in marriage to James Floyd Morgan on May 13, 1947. The couple farmed, raised chickens, pigs and cattle east of the Rosalie area, northwest of Decatur, where they built their home and raised their son and daughter. The couple shared a passion for and attended many music festivals and dances. Jim passed away July 25, 2002. She continued to live on the farm where she loved to work outside, caring for the farmstead, lawn and flowers. She also enjoyed sewing, outdoor painting and “fix-it” challenges, and loved working with machinery and farming with her husband. She enjoyed her children and their families.

She was preceded in death by her parents Rachel and Everett Harmer; brother Charles Harmer; sisters Dorothy Taylor and Everetta Bonneau; sister-in-law Dorothy Shamburg; brother–in-law Rex Morgan.

Survivors include two children, Jim (Jean) Morgan and Kathleen (Jack) Buhr, both of Decatur, sister Mildred Edgington of South Sioux City, brother Sam (Linda) Harmer of Tekamah, brother-in-law Don Bonneau of Henderson Nevada; sisters-in-law Iva Anderson; Verna Vogt; Jean Thomas and Elva Barnett; brothers-in-law Ralph Morgan; Max Morgan; Jack Morgan and Jary Morgan, 5 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

The Funeral Service will be Sat., Feb. 27th at 10:30 a.m. at the Memorial United Methodist Church in Lyons NE. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service at the church.

Burial is in the Lyons Cemetery in Lyons NE.
