Eugene Robert Rollins, 77 of Tekamah, NE


EUGENE ROBERT ROLLINS was born October 30, 1936 in Tekamah, Nebraska to Robert Dean and Evelyn Frances (Moffitt) Rollins.  Gene passed away Thursday, August 21, 2014 at the Oakland Mercy Hospital in Oakland, Nebraska, at the age of 77 years.  Gene’s father Robert passed away when he was only one month old.  In 1940, Evelyn married Willis Valder and the family grew by three sisters; Janice, Marleen and Karen Sue.

Gene was in the Army from 1953-1956.  Upon returning home from overseas he married Sylvia Walter on July 28, 1957, in Decatur, Nebraska.  From this union their son, Kyle was born.  Gene spent most of his career in agriculture, working 27 years for Midwest Service in Tekamah. Since then he spent his free time in the fields helping area farmers.

Gene was very dedicated to the area by serving 12 years on the Burt County Board of Supervisors.  He was also on the Board of Directors for NENCAP.  Gene was a member of the Nebraska Association of County Officials.  His true passion was being a lifetime member of the V.F.W Post 3304 in Tekamah, where he served as Post Commander for 10 years.  Gene also enjoyed spending time with his two grandchildren, Cole and Malory.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife Sylvia of Tekamah; son and daughter-in-law, Kyle and Kristy Rollins of Bennington; grandchildren Cole and Malory Rollins; three sisters, Janice Scripter of Valentine, Marleen Barta of Omaha, and Sue (Bruce) Whittier of Maryland; and a host of family and friends.

ARLENE A. WEATHERLY, 87 years, of Tekamah, Nebraska, passed away Saturday, May 10, 2014, at Memorial Community Hospital in Blair, Nebraska.

Arlene was born March 25, 1927, to Albert and Violet (Wallin) Hammer in Bradish, Nebraska. She grew up on a farm in the Albion, Nebraska, area and graduated from Albion High School in 1944.

She met her future husband, Mack Weatherly, when he was working on her parent¹s farm. It was her interest in sports that brought them together and their first date was to a football game. October 12, 1946, they eloped to Marysville, Kansas, and got married. Three daughters, Karen, Cindi and Tracy were born to this union.

Arlene was a very active member of the community.  She belonged to Tekamah United Methodist Church, was a member of the Burt County Museum Board, Tekamah Book Club, Thursday Social Extension Club and P.E.O. Chapter DC. She held several jobs during her life including Blair Wedding World, Wolfe’s Jewelry, Dick’s Western Store and driving a school bus. One of Arlene’s favorite things to do was attending Nebraska football games, after which Mack and her loved entertaining family and friends. She also loved to knit, sew and spend time at her daughter’s greenhouse. She looked forward to her dinner outings with “the girls”. Arlene was very devoted to her family and will be remembered for the wonderful cooking the family enjoyed.

Preceding her in death were her parents; and husband.

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Karen (Jim) Elliott of Craig, NE and Houston, TX, Cindi (Tom) Dahl of Papillion, NE, Tracy Weatherly of Omaha, NE; three grandsons, Scott (Jennifer) Elliott, Rusty (Arian) Elliott, Chris (Allison) Dahl; five great-grandchildren; sister, Vivian (Don) Thomas of Tekamah; special friend, Gennie Elliott; and a host of other family and friends. When someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure.

MEMORIAL SERVICE: Saturday, May 17, 2014, 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Tekamah.

Ronald Clarence Gobel, 86 of Tekamah, NE


Ronald Clarence Gobel was born to Roy and Frances (Kollars) Gobel March 31st, 1928 on a homestead farm outside of Crofton, Nebraska where he was the 3rd youngest of 9 children. He passed away April 20th, 2014 at the Golden Living Center in Tekamah, Nebraska, after a brief illness.

Crofton High School. As a child, Ronald enjoyed hunting, fishing, and trapping.  He helped on the family farm.  Later in life he enjoyed gardening, working with wood, and spending time with his family.

Ronald enlisted in the U.S. Marines in 1945 where he served for two years.

On March 31st, 1948 he married Verona Eaton in Camp Pendleton, Oceanside, California.  Soon after they were married, they returned to Crofton.  He was employed at the Crofton Implement as a mechanic, and the Crofton Creamery as a Plantman.  In 1956 they moved to Omaha, NE. where Ronald worked at the Sorenson Dairy and Sutton Siding. In 1977 He and Verona, along with the four remaining children at home moved to Tekamah where they started their business Gobel Siding.  Still climbing ladders at the age of 69, he retired in 1998.

He was a member of the VFW Bataan Post No. 3304 & the American Legion Lafrenz Post No. 15.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 49 years, Verona; daughter, Kathy; grandsons, Ronald and Nicholas; and brothers Renne, Alton, Sid, and Tim.

Survivors include his son Deane of Fordyce, NE, daughters, Nancy Schaeffer of Harvey, ND, Pam Langfeldt of Tekamah, Libby Bond of Beatrice, NE, Jane (Richard) Elske of Tekamah, Donna (Bob) Schnell of Lincoln, NE, Mary Jo Thomas of Lincoln, and son Jim (Shelli) Gobel of Tekamah; 30 Grandchildren; 62 Great Grandchildren; 5 Great Great Grandchildren; brothers Nile of Oregon, Leon (Gerri) Gobel of Crofton, Ned (Diane) Gobel of Crofton; and sister Audrey (Donald) Sutton of Omaha.

MEMORIAL MASS: Thursday, April 24, 2014, 10:30 am, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Tekamah.

MILITARY HONORS: VFW Bataan Post No. 3304, American Legion LaFrenz Post No. 15
