Elaine M. Holm, 93, of Wakefield, Nebraska passed away Wednesday, July 15, 2015 at the Wakefield Health Care Center in Wakefield. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 18, 2015 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wakefield, with Pastor William Bertrand officiating.

Visitation will be held 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, July 17, 2015 at Bressler – Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home in Wakefield with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be in the Wakefield Cemetery in Wakefield. Darlene Rose Mavis, 85, of Wakefield, Nebraska passed away Sunday, November 23, 2014 at Providence Medical Center in Wayne, Nebraska. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 1, 2014 at the Presbyterian Church in Wakefield, Nebraska; with Pastor Charity Potter officiating. Visitation will be held 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service starting at 7:00 p.m. Sunday, November 30, 2014 at Bressler – Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home in Wakefield, Nebraska. Burial will be in the Wakefield Cemetery in Wakefield, Nebraska. Memorials may be given to the family for future designation. Darlene was born April 23, 1929 in Lincoln, NE to Jerald and Lucille (Janousek) Hausner. She graduated from Lincoln High School in 1947. She married Robert E. Mavis on May 23, 1948 in Lincoln, NE. Darlene worked at Elgin Watch Company for many years, the Corner Café and enjoyed selling antiques and collectibles. Darlene was a faithful member of the Wakefield Presbyterian Church, where she was an elder, and a member of the Women’s Group. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was an avid Nebraska Football fan. She enjoyed exercising, shopping for collectables, and square dancing. Darlene liked filling out crossword puzzles and playing Scrabble. In the summer, Darlene loved to travel and go camping. Darlene loved this time of the year, especially when she spent it with her family.

Darlene is survived by her daughter, Vicki (Harlan) Waak of Lincoln, NE, Julie (Dale) Paulsen of Norfolk, NE; son, Robert (Linda) Mavis of Oakland, NE; sister; Sheryl (Jerry) Karst of LaGrange, IN; grandchildren, Jeremy Waak, Nathan Waak, Stuart Waak, Nolan Waak, Matthew Paulsen, Christopher Paulsen, Robert Mavis, Steven Mavis, Gwyn Lockett, great granddaughters, Abigail Paulsen, and Lyra Michelle Mavis.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert, parents, sister, Geraldine (Dwayne) Carman, and brother, Bobby Hausner.

Willis J. Kahl, 88, of Wakefield NE


Willis J. Kahl, 88, of Wakefield, Nebraska died on Friday, November 14, 2014 at the Wakefield Assisted Living in Wakefield, Nebraska. Funeral services for Willis will be held on Thursday, November 20, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Emerson; Pastor Gretchen Ritola will be officiating. The visitation will be held on Thursday morning at 9:00 and will run until the time of the funeral at the church. Burial with military honors will be held in the Wakefield Cemetery in Wakefield, Nebraska. Memorials are suggested to St. Luke’s Lutheran Church. Bressler – Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home of Wakefield is in charge of the arrangements.

Willis was born on June 10, 1926 in Sioux City, IA, the son of Willie and Rosa (Hoeck) Kahl. He grew up near Emerson, Nebraska, graduating from Emerson High School. Following school, Willis served in the United States Army during WW II. He was united in marriage to Evelyn Wennekamp on June 27, 1948. To this union four children were born: Dennis, Cheryl, Randy and Brent. The couple farmed near Wakefield. Later Willis worked for the Morrison Quirk Dehy Plant near Bancroft. They moved into Wakefield in 1995. In 2013, Willis moved into the Wakefield Assisted Living.

He was active in the Pops Partner 4-H Club, serving as a leader for several years. He also served on the Dixon County Fair Board, the Wakefield Hospital Planning Board, and the Livestock Feeders and Pork Feeders. Willis was a member of the Emerson American Legion and was an active member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church serving on the Church Council and as a Sunday School teacher. He also was a set builder for the Little Red Hen Theater in Wakefield.

Willis is survived by his wife Evelyn of Wakefield, NE, sons: Dennis (Nancy) Kahl of Seward, NE, Randy (Vicky) Kahl of Rancho Viejo, TX and Brent (Tatiana) Kahl of Indianapolis, IN and a daughter Cheryl (Warren) Johnson of Omaha, NE. He is also survived by thirteen grandchildren and ten great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Erma Jahn.

Jeanne M. (Henderson) Gardner, 83, of Wakefield, Nebraska died on Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at Providence Medical Center in Wayne, Nebraska. A celebration of Jeanne’s life will be held on Friday, September 26, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Wakefield; Pastor Kelly Johnston will be officiating. The visitation will be held on Thursday, September 25, 2014 from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the Little Red Hen Theater (located at 316 Main St.) in Wakefield. Inurnment will be in the Wakefield Cemetery. Lunch will follow at the Wakefield American Legion Hall. Bressler – Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home of Wakefield is in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the family for future designation.

Jeanne was born on November 14, 1930 in Emerson, Nebraska, the daughter of Frank and Cora (Heckens) Henderson. She graduated from Emerson High School in 1948 and later graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English. She was united in marriage to Daniel Gardner on January 23, 1953. Jeanne was the proud mother of Alan, David, Kirk and Leslie. As a young mother she was active as a Cub Scout Den Mother, a 4-H Leader, active in Salem Lutheran Church as a church council member and teaching Sunday school, and a member of the Prairie Hills Girls Scout Board and the Wakefield Health Care Center Board. Later in life she was quite active as a founding member of the Nebraskans for the Arts, President of the Gardner Foundation, Local S.T.A.R.T Chairperson, Producer of the Little Red Hen Theater, Owner and Restorer of Jeanne’s at the Haskell House, Area Physician Recruitment Committee, co-chair of the Wayne State Capital Campaign, Marian Health Care Center Board, Marian Health Care Center Foundation Board, the Sioux City Symphony Board and Foundation, the Sioux City Art Center Board, Wakefield Community Foundation Board and Honorary Board of Directors of the John G. Neihardt Center.

Most of all, Jeanne was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be missed by her family and all who knew her. Jeanne is survived by her sons: David (Rosemary) Gardner of Sheldon, SC and Kirk Gardner of Bellevue, NE and a daughter Leslie (Tim) Bebee of Wakefield, NE. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Adam, Brooke and Jordan Gardner, Ross, Kyle and Carly Gardner, Javanah Jensen, Timarie Hansen and Garek Bebee, and great grandchildren: Jaxon Benscoter, Saul Hansen, Ryker Jensen, Cole Gardner and Baby Hansen due in November. Her brother Sterling Henderson of Norfolk, NE also survives Jeanne.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Dan, a son Alan Gardner and two brothers: Harley Henderson and Mort Henderson.

Betty May Miner, 81, of Wakefield, Nebraska died on Sunday, August 31, 2014 at the Wakefield Health Care Center in Wakefield, Nebraska. Betty was born on a farm near Allen, Nebraska on April 14, 1933, the daughter of Philo and Gladys (Penlerick) Thompson. She attended country school before entering Allen where she graduated from high school in 1951. On November 4, 1952, Betty was united in marriage to Robert Miner at the Allen Methodist Church. To this union two sons were born Larry and LaVern and three adopted children Dave, Jerry and Patty. The couple owned and operated the B & B Café for several years. Betty also worked at the M.G. Waldbaum’s egg plant and later babysat children. In her earlier years, Betty was a cub scout leader. She was involved in the Covenant Church Women and enjoyed playing cards, word search puzzles and camping.

She is survived by her daughter-in-law LeAnn Miner of Wakefield, NE, several grandchildren including Shad (Tara) Miner, Shanda (John) Geiser and Brady Miner all of Wakefield, several great grandchildren including Weston Miner, Camden Geiser and Asher Geiser, sons Dave (Judy) Miner of South Sioux City, NE and Jerry Nelson of Sioux City, IA.,. She is also survived by two brothers Ross (Bonnie) Thompson of Sidney, NE and Norman (Mickey) Thompson of Kearney, NE and three sisters-in-law Jean Thompson of Fremont, NE, Janet Thompson of Wilbur, NE and Sandy Thompson of Sloan, IA.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Robert who died in 1999, sons Larry who died shortly after birth and Vern who died in 2005, brothers Merlyn, Mike and Pat, Manuel and Bobby Thompson a sister Edith Taylor and an infant sister.
