Get Healthy! Exercise and eating right is the key! The challenge is on!

I challenge you to walk, or do some type of exercise! Let’s all get healthy! The stats show obesity is on the rise! I know I want to live a long healthy life. Don’t you? Get up, get moving! I will be posting more about walking, exercise and eating healthy during the next several months, or maybe forever! If you want to walk with me, just let me know. I would enjoy the company, but mostly enjoy the fact that you want to get healthy too! This isn’t just for adults, children need to quit using their thumbs for exercise. Go play outside. Get away from the computer! No junk food!!! Eat healthy foods.

I am going to keep walking and lifting weights. Are you?

The Board of the Village of Decatur met in regular session at 4:30 P.M. at the Community Center on August 14, 2014.

1)         The meeting was called to order by Vice-Chairman Bob Richards .

1) Police-Monthly Report
A. Cheryl Gatewood, Nicole Kampa-Dogs

Cheryl and Nicole came to the table to plead their cases about their dogs not being dangerous. They are both working very hard to keep their dogs at home either in the house or on a chain.
Bolln made a motion to deem their dogs not dangerous.
Warren seconded the motion.
Roll Call: Richards-yes, Tolby-yes (with hesitation), Bolln-yes, Warren-yes.

  1. Tekamah City Council requests a meeting with the Decatur Village Board
    Tom Lamb was not able to come to the meeting. He had called this morning and stated that his council will meet tonight, and they would like to meet with our Village Board about merging Police departments.

Warren stated that she was not included in the meetings that had taken place with Tom Lamb (Chief of Police in Tekamah). Tolby stated that only two members of the Board could meet with him at a time. Warren stated that she did not even know about the meetings, and she should have been offered a chance to meet with him. The Clerk tried to set a time for Tom to meet with Warren, but she had to work and Tom was on vacation.
2) Lights-Monthly Report
The new poles are in at the ball park.
3) Water & Sewer- Monthly Report

Dan Sawyer from the Nebraska department of roads was in the office, he had a phone call from Ernest Madison about the erosion problem at the storm sewer drainage ditch. He suggested putting rip rap in the ditch and said he would check to see if the Nebraska Department of Roads could help the Village with the cost.
4) Parks- Monthly Report

  1. Income for August $3,678.00.
    B. Playground Ground Equipment is up.

The play ground equipment is up and the pea gravel has been put in at Beck-Busse memorial Campground.
5) Streets- Monthly Report
A. Howard Storm and Jeremiah Sears hill
Frank has put rock on both hills. Richards stated that with all the unusual rainfall we had this spring, it has really took a toll on these hills. The Village had an engineer look at Jeremiah’s hill but it would cost over $100,000.00 to resurface this hill. The straight away on Howard’s hill is the Village’s responsibility, the curve is the owners responsibility.

1) 2014-2015 Budget
The Board discussed prepaying propane this year.
Warren made a motion to prepay 6,000 gallons of propane.

The Village Clerks worked on the budget along with the help of the Board.
Bolln made a motion to send the copy of the budget to the auditors as written.
Warren seconded the motion.

7)         CORRESPONDENCE

The Board received an apology letter from Steven Swaner for the unfortunate event that took place at Beck-Busse Memorial Campground a few weeks ago. Margaret Tolby read the letter to the rest of the Board and audience. He has completed his community service hours by helping the Village, Fire department and American Legion.

Wolf asked if the meeting that is set up with the Tekamah City Council will be an open meeting? The Board stated it will be open to the public and will be advertised as any other Village meeting. It was also asked if the meeting will take place in Decatur or Tekamah? The Board is not sure of the location of the meeting at this time.

Burt County Board of Supervisors Minutes


The Burt County Board of Supervisors met this date pursuant to adjournment of their last meeting with the following members present: Cliff Morrow, Gerald Newill, David Schold, Perry Rogers, Matt Connealy, Greg Brummond and Gene Rollins.

The meeting opened at 9:00 A.M. upon motion by Rollins, seconded by Schold, with roll call vote as follows: Ayes – Newill, Schold, Rogers, Connealy, Brummond and Rollins. Nays – none. Chairman Morrow informed the public that the Nebraska Open Meeting Act was posted on the wall.

Upon motion by Connealy, seconded by Rogers, the agenda was approved with the addition of appointing Tyler Peterson to the Planning Commission, with roll call vote as follows: Ayes – Newill, Schold, Rogers, Connealy, Brummond and Rollins. Nays – none.

Visiting the Board were Peggy Smith, Mike Braniff, Joni Renshaw, Karen Grass and Abby Surber.

The County Clerk Report of Fees, the County Court Report of Fines, the District Court Fee Report and the Zoning Report for July were approved upon motion by Rogers, seconded by Schold, with roll call vote as follows: Ayes – Newill, Schold, Rogers, Connealy, Brummond and Rollins. Nays – none.

Communications from Ken Sharp (accidents and wooden poles), the Nebraska Probation District (copy of new budget), the Nebraska Department of Roads (2013 Annual Report), Northeast Nebraska Economic Development District (2014 Annual Report) and Brehmer Manufacturing (invitation) were noted and placed on file.

Board Member Connealy offered the following resolution and moved for its adoption:

WHEREAS Burt County has jurisdiction over Craig, Decatur, Riverside, Arizona, and Pershing Townships;

AND WHEREAS their budgets will contain all zeros;

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Burt County Board of Supervisors that they approve an audit waiver request for each township.

Board Member Rollins seconded the motion, and the Chairman declared it adopted, with roll call vote as follows: Ayes – Morrow, Connealy, Brummond and Rollins. Nays – Newill, Schold and Rogers.

After discussion regarding a cell phone policy, Schold moved to pay for cell phones for the Sheriff and his Deputies, the Road Foreman, and the maintenance person and, if there is a need, allow for the purchase of a trac phone to be kept at the County Clerk’s Office to be used by any office who needs it for a short period of time. Rogers seconded the motion, with roll call vote as follows: Ayes – Newill, Schold, Rogers, Connealy, Brummond and Rollins. Nays – none.

Motion was made by Rogers, seconded by Newill, to allow the Chairman to sign a new Interlocal Agreement with the Elkhorn Logan Valley Public Health Department, with roll call vote as follows: Ayes – Newill, Schold, Rogers, Connealy, Brummond and Rollins. Nays – none.

At their July 30, 2014 meeting, the Board accepted the low bid from Gene Steffy for a new pickup for the Road Department in the amount of $27,026.00. Highway Superintendent Smith informed the Board that the pickup had been sold before the County could accept the bid.

Smith brought a new bid from Woodhouse for a 2014 Ram 2500 pickup in the amount of $28,742.00. Motion was made by Brummond, seconded by Connealy, to accept the bid of $28,742.00, with roll call vote as follows: Ayes – Newill, Schold, Rogers, Connealy, Brummond and Rollins. Nays – none.

Upon motion by Schold, seconded by Connealy, the Board approved a Special Designated Liquor License for JT’s Bar & Grill for the beer garden at the rodeo grounds on August 30, 2014, for the demolition derby, with roll call vote as follows: Ayes – Newill, Schold, Rogers, Connealy, Brummond and Rollins. Nays – none.

Upon motion by Newill, seconded by Schold, the Board approved the addition of Tyler Peterson to the Planning Commission, with roll call vote as follows: Ayes – Newill, Schold, Rogers, Connealy, Brummond and Rollins. Nays – none.

There being no further business to come before the Board at this time, the Board adjourned at 10:06 A.M. until 9:00 A.M. August 28, 2014.

Twila Mae Vavra, 75 of Lyons NE


TWILA MAE VAVRA, 75 years, of Lyons, Nebraska, passed away Wednesday, August 13, 2014, in Bancroft, Nebraska.

Twila was born August 15, 1938, at Pender, Nebraska, the daughter of Anton and Wavia (Twyford) Fendrick. She attended country school near her home and high school in Thurston, Nebraska.

On April 24, 1960, Twila married Dale Vavra at the United Methodist Church in Thurston. To this marriage three children were born, Curtis, Debbie and Lance.  They lived on a farm northeast of Rosalie, Nebraska, and then moved to the home place, where they farmed until moving into Lyons in 1985. Twila was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bancroft.

Twila loved her flowers and spent countless hours gardening in her yard on the farm. She enjoyed spending time with her grandkids and going out with her sisters, working on needlepoint or trying her best to beat Dale at a game of cards.

She was preceded by her parents and brother and sister-in-law, Franklin and Myrna Fendrick.

Survivors include her husband, Dale of Lyons; children and their spouses, Curtis and Rhonda Vavra of Decatur, NE, Debbie and Bill Witt, Lance and Lynette Vavra all of Rosalie;  brothers and sisters-in-law, Harold  and Darlene Fendrick of Arcata, CA, Bob and Pat Fendrick of Pender, Anton and Pam Fendrick Jr. of Tallahassee, FL; sisters, Marlene Abendroth of Bancroft; Betty Meister of Pearson, IA; seven grandchildren, Brantley  and Melissa Vavra,  Patrick (Jami)  Erickson, Anthony  and Colten Ruzicka, Tyler and Garret Vavra; five great grandchildren, Hadee and Kaylee, Amara, Caleb and Savannah ; many family and host of friends.

FUNERAL SERVICE: Monday, August 18, 2014, 10:30 am, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bancroft.

VISITATION: Sunday 5-8 pm with family receiving friends at the Pelan Funeral Home in Lyons. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to service at the church.

BURIAL: Lyons Cemetery

We have a fun week ahead, on Thursday August 14th at 2:30 pm Charlie Davis will be here to play his Harmonica, on Saturday August 16th the Rusty Buckets will be here at 2:30pm to perform. We have several Birthday’s coming up on August 16th is Lois Anderson and John Dekker, and next week on August 22nd is Iva Andersons, Happy Birthday to all. Also next week is our monthly Waffle Supper on Thursday August 21st at 5:30 pm.

Church Service for Sunday August 17th at 2:30 pm will be given by the Evang. Free Church with refreshments served afterwards. Monday August 18th at 2:30 pm is Communion with First Lutheran.

Activities for the week of August 18th to August 23rd, are as follows, , Reading with Marilyn, Sing a Long, Game Day, Bingo w/Salem., Reading Group, Bible Fellowship, Let’s Play Ball, Crafty Cooking, Friday Bingo, Saturday morning movie, and Lawrence Welk.

6th Annual Beer and Limerick Festival at Neihardt Center Saturday


  1. The 6th Annual Neihardt Beer and Limerick Festival will be held Saturday, August 16, 2014 at the Historic Ferguson House, 700 S. 16th St. in Lincoln, Nebraska from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sample craft beers and appetizers from area brew pub sponsors, and compete in the wildest beer-related limerick contest this side of Milwaukee. Tickets for this event are $25 for general admittance and $20 for Neihardt Foundation members. Attendees may purchase tickets at the door or in advance by contacting the Neihardt State Historic Site at 402-648-3388 or email. Must be 21 to participate; I.D. required. Verified designated drivers admission free. This event is a fundraiser for the John Neihardt State Historical Site, which honors the literary and thematic legacy of John G. Neihardt and preserves the heritage of the Great Plains and its great voices. Author of Black Elk Speaks and numerous other works of prose and poetry, John G. Neihardt is the Poet Laureate in Perpetuity of Nebraska. To commemorate his life and work, the John G. Neihardt State Historical Site was established on the site of his former home in Bancroft, Nebraska. And is under the management of the John G. Neihardt Foundation as a branch museum of the Nebraska State Historical Society.

Dennis Oberhelman, 72 of Laurel NE


Dennis Oberhelman, 72, of Laurel, Nebraska died on Wednesday, August 13, 2014 at his sons home in Laurel after a battle with cancer.

Per his wishes, Dennis has been cremated. Private services will be held at a later date. Bressler – Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home of Wakefield is in charge of the arrangements.
