PETER A. CARVALHO, 69 years, of West Point, Nebraska, went to be with the Lord Sunday, September 7, 2014, at Oakland Heights, in Oakland, Nebraska, as a result of a stroke in May 2011.
Peter was born October 7, 1944, in San Jose, California, to Antonio M and Marie (Silva) Carvalho of Portuguese decent. He attended Willow Glen Schools and Five Wounds Church. A severe medical issue at the age of 19 prevented his enlistment in the Navy. No longer eligible to enlist, he graduated from San Jose State College to pursue a 30-year career as a contract designer in Silicon Valley.
While attending a photo class in 1985, he met and then married Janet V. Diuble. Peter and Janet traveled throughout the USA from 1989-1991. In 1991 they settled in Larimer County, Colorado, where they were active at Abundant Life Christian Church, Promise Keepers and then Estes Park Wesleyan Church and Livermore Community Church. In 2004 they moved to Snyder, Nebraska, before relocating to West Point. Since then, Peter attended Salem Covenant Church in rural Oakland. He was active in men’s bible study groups at Salem Church and West Point.
Peter’s Grandmother Silva was a big part of his young life, a devout Christian, always praying her rosary and teaching herself English by reading newspapers. On Sundays, she and Peter would walk to the theater in Willow Glen to see a movie. He pursued a stamp collection with his favorite aunt, Irene Silva, and continued with a life-long collection.
He loved walking on the beaches, gatherings with his family along the coast with his cousins and playing horseshoes. He loved the mountains and said he felt closest to God when he was in the Redwoods. Peter was an accomplished photographer, especially with black and white and had his own dark room. Always an avid reader, he would visit libraries everywhere and collected books on hundreds of subjects. He had an elaborate media system and loved his Vandersteens. Some of his interests included railroads, car and train shows, antiques, rocks, minerals, music of all sorts, especially classical, blues and jazz. Peter was passionate about studying world and local history, WW II, and the Civil War; riding his Virago motorcycle and traveling in his Volkswagen van and Toyota Sunrader.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents and parents.
Survivors include his wife, Janet of West Point; step-son, David (Diana) Diuble of Grass Lake, MI; step-daughter, Sally (Terry) King of Oakland and seven grandchildren: Brenden, Dalten and Dawsen Diuble, Desiree, Carrie, Lindsay and Josh King.
