Northeast Comes From Behind to Beat Emerson-Hubbard

The Northeast football team made a major come back as they defeated Emerson-Hubbard 54-50 before a Homecoming crowd.  They trailed 50-30 going into the final quarter.  The Cougars held the Pirates scoreless while scoring three touchdowns along with the all important PATs to get the win.  The final score came on a 68 yard pass from Montana Riecken to Jon Christiansen.

Northeast jumped out to a 22 to 8 first quarter lead, but the next two quarters belonged to Emerson-Hubbard.  The Pirate outscored Northeast 42 to 8.

Both team scored 7 times, but Emerson-Hubbard was turned back the Cougar defense on the PAT three times.  Northeast got three touchdown runs from both  Riecken and Marcus Hegy and a TD reception by Jon Christiansen.   Hegy  added one PAT run while Riecken got two.  Northeast got six more points from two PAT passes to Tyler Kroger and one to Jayden Vetick.

The Cougars rushed for 313 yards, but they were well below their average with only 4.5 yard per carry.  Montana Riecken gained 124 yards on 29 carries.  Marcus Hegy rushed 34 times for 162 yards. Benny Estrada added 23 yards and Jon Christiansen gained 4.

Northeast threw seven passes.  Montana Riecken completed four.  Jayden Vetick caught one for 10 yards.  Jon C gained  84 yards on three receptions.

Riecken was the star on defense with 19 tackles , 2 TFLs.  His interception in the  fourth quarter allowed the Cougars to run out the clock. Jon Christiansen had 14, Tyler Kroger 12, and Marcus Hegy 11. Cole Christoffersen had a blocked punt.

The Cougar put themselves in a District championship game with the win.  They have a record of 5-2 with a 4-0 mark in district action.  On Thursday,  they travel to Wynot for the regular season finale.  The Blue Devils are 6-1 and also 4-0 in the district.

Brock Stuart Redding, 25, of Fremont NE

Brock Stuart Redding, 25, of Fremont, NE, passed away Friday, October 23, 2015, near Valley, NE, as a result of an automobile accident.

Brock was born January 28, 1990, at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland to Randall and Marlene (Petersen) Redding. Brock lived in Fremont the majority of his life. He graduated from Cedar Bluffs High School in 2008. He worked at Leaf Guard of the Midlands.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Fremont where he was confirmed on April 25, 2004. He was active in the Boy Scouts Troop #110 at North Bend, NE for 5 years. Brock enjoyed woodworking and camping. His passion in life was horticulture and Brock was particularly prideful of his roses. Brock loved shooting darts and was on a dart league and often hit a bullseye.

Brock is survived by his sons, Carter and Parker Redding of Fremont; parents, Randall and Marlene Redding of Fremont; brother, Brandon Redding of Fremont; paternal grandmother, Marion Redding of Bancroft, NE; maternal grandmother, Janell Petersen of Lyons, NE; niece, Brynne Redding of Fremont; many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Brock was preceded in death by his brother, Brett Redding; grandfathers, Verle Redding and Lee Roy Petersen; great grandmother, Marie Anderson.

Funeral service will be 10:30 AM, Thursday, October 29, 2015, at First United Methodist Church in Fremont. The Rev Michael McGregor and Pastor Rod Anderson will officiate. Visitation will be 4 PM – 8 PM, Wednesday with family receiving friends from 6 PM to 8 PM at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. Visitation on Thursday, one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at the Lyons Cemetery in Lyons, NE.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Letter to the Editor from Therese Magill

Dear Editor,
I am writing about the recall of two board members in Decatur. I am encouraging every registered voter to vote yes for the recall. We need all your votes and they do make a difference. In regards to the answers that Loretta Kellogg and Alta Wolf have answered.
#1 The quarterly budget reports have been in place since I started at the Village office in 2000. The budget sheets were in the Board members packets at each meeting.
#2 The reason that the Village has money for now is because we had no police officer for seven months, one of the full time maintenance took another job.
#3 As far as the $200,000.00 loan for the Community Center, Alta Wolf was on the Board when that happened. The Village had a $250,000.00 grant plus the $200,000.00 loan to (fix a building that continues to leak and flood the basement.
#4 The “working” session that Loretta mentioned; is she being sexist by mentioning that the two “male” board members did not show up to, in a working session there can be no decisions made. If the only thing they discussed were the surveys, then why was one of the Village maintenance men let go that day?
#5 As far as Alta Wolf’s authority; she offered me $15.00 an hour to stay with the Village if I would work half of my day at the maintenance shop to make sure they did their job. This all happened before she was voted into office.
#6 As far as Joe Gatto paying for his own schooling at the academy; the Village is now paying for it. Then they hire a part-time police officer that sued the Village. This in no way means that I have anything against the officers.
#7 You let a 15 year dedicated employee go that was only making $12.50 an hour. She worked in the office, cleaned the Community center, helped read meters, cleaned the park bathrooms and anything else that was asked. I have nothing against the two part-time people that were hired at $10.00 each, but that doesn’t make much sense.
#8 You want to take the family insurance away from the two full time employee’s, that is the only benefit they get. Yes they get reduced lights but it is added on their W-2’s at the end of the year.
#9 We had a brand new police car. It was never taken care of. Is the information accurate about the used police car that the Board is considering purchasing from Oakland?
#10 As far as paying the deductible on Joe’s vehicle (I am sorry that someone would do that) we had a police officer a few years ago that he had his vehicle completely destroyed in one of the Village’s buildings and he was not given anything.
#11 As far as Dan Magill not having his certifications. He is certified in water, yes he has taken the test three times, but did anyone ask how many times it took the other maintenance men to pass? For further information he was told by board members not to worry about his sewer certification.
#12 Because we have our own opinions about things does not mean we are fools!!
#13 If you are going to take someone’s pay away for doing something to help the community, you better make sure that it was him. Maybe you should have stopped to see instead of taking it for granted that it was him.
#14 The white truck that you have been seeing at the Green Lantern belongs to John Hightree. Again maybe you should have stopped by!!
#15 One of the Board members did not even know where the sewer plant was.
#16 We have lost our recycling center and dump.
#17 You mentioned employment of Village officials; what about paying a spouse of one of the Board members for fixing a vehicle? The Village is audited every year and they have never had a problem with it and they receive a 1099 for their work.

#18 Infrastructure-the basic physical and organizational structures and facilities (e.g., buildings, roads, and power supplies) needed for the operation of a society or enterprise.
#19 Our power is bought from Burt County Public Power and they take care of the primary lines, we own the lines in town.
#20 One of the Board members writes for the Lyons Mirror- Sun, is that not a conflict of interest?

Richard W. Frye, 67, of Wayne, NE died on Sunday, October 25, 2015 at his home in Wayne after a long illness. A memorial gathering will be held on Friday, October 30, 2015 from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the Bressler – Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home in Wakefield.

Burial will be held at a later date in Goobertown, Arkansas. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the family for future designation. Bressler – Munderloh – Smith Funeral is in charge of the arrangements.

Walter W “Bud” Small Jr., 91, of Decatur NE

Walter W “Bud” SMALL Jr, 91 years, of Decatur, Nebraska, passed away Saturday, October 24, 2015

WW (Bud) Small was born November 16, 1923, in Decatur Nebraska, to Walter and Tessa (Mayberry) Small. He entered into rest surrounded by his family Saturday, at Regency Square Care Center in South Sioux City, Nebraska.

Bud worked with his family in Decatur at the Small Hardware and at the Princess Movie Theater growing up. He played football for the Decatur Bulldogs and graduated from Decatur High School in 1941. Bud joined the Army in 1943. He returned to Decatur where he married Ida Jane (Blankenbeckler) Small and to this union 2 boys were born. Later Bud was introduced by his sister to Viola Lunz. They were married August 14, 1955, in Martinsburg, Nebraska, and made their home on a farm near Decatur. When Decatur’s Toll bridge opened in 1956 Bud was there to take the first toll and remained on the bridge for 35 years. Viola helped raise Bud’s two young boys and helped on the farm beside her husband until they retired. He loved to fish and took his family on numerous family vacations. In their later years, they enjoyed going to Florida fishing in the winter. Bud continued to farm in Decatur with his son John and later with his youngest son Dan. Bud continued to overlook the farming operation even after he went to the nursing home.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Walter and Tessa (Mayberry) Small, wife; Viola (Lunz) Small, son; John Small, sister; Helen (Small) Gatewood

W.W. Small (Bud) is survived by his son, Daniel and Konnie Small of Decatur; Daughter in Law, June Small of Sioux City, IA; His grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. Also a host of friends, whose lives, Bud made an impact on.

FUNERAL SERVICE: Wednesday, October 28, 2015, 10:30 am, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Decatur

BURIAL WITH MILITARY HONORS: Hillcrest Cemetery, Decatur

VISITATION: Tuesday 5-7 pm with family receiving friends and MASONIC SERVICE at 7pm, all at Pelan Funeral Services in Tekamah. Visitation will also be held at the church one hour prior to service.

2nd to 5th Streets Closed on Oakland Avenue for trick or treating Oct. 29th

On October 29th, 2015 in efforts to assist
the Oakland NE Chamber of Commerce
with the business trick or treat event held on Oakland Avenue, from 2nd to 5th Street Oakland Avenue will be closed from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm. Also access to Oakland Avenue from 3rd & 4th Street will be closed to prevent traffic movement onto Oakland Avenue during the event.

Assisting these efforts will be the Oakland Fire and Rescue Dept that will help aid the Oakland Police Department with blocking traffic to Oakland Avenue.

The Oakland Police Department would ask that all vehicles be removed from Oakland Avenue prior to the event or any vehicle remaining on Oakland Avenue after 3:00 pm will not be allowed to move during the event. We would like to advise anyone planning to drive to the event that parking will still be accessible to the side streets along Oakland Avenue.

The efforts of closing down access to Oakland Avenue is to bring a safe and enjoyable time for the children, and peace of mind for the parents.
