The senior center provides Information and Assistance to any individual who is looking for services for themselves or another person 60 years and older, the center manager and/or center participant can provide information to individuals on services available within the community. We link individuals to the services and opportunities that are available within or beyond the community itself. We will then establish adequate follow-up procedures to see that their needs were met. For more information call 402-648-3387.

*If you are 60 years and older and need information on programs designed to help keep you in your home longer or if you need legal help, contact Connie at 402-648-3387 or in the evening at 402-648-7648.

* We have the following medical equipment to loan out on an as need basis, wheel chair, bath seats, toilet seat riser and portable toilet chair, crutches or walkers. Call 402-648-3387 during office hours.

Meals on Wheels

*Would you like to get Meals on Wheels? Anyone over the age of 60 years and lives within the city limits are eligible for these meals. You may sign up anytime for the Meals on Wheels program; you can get the meals delivered however many times you want them each week. You must call 402-687-2332 before 8:30 a.m. if you want a meal that day. The suggested donation for the meals is $4.00.

Weekly Activities:

Wed. Dec. 9: Melody chime practice at 9:00 a.m. Come for coffee at 10:00 am. Come and play bingo with us at 2:00 p.m.

Thurs. Dec. 10: Tai Chi class is at 9:30 and walking club at 10:45 a.m. Rolls and coffee          from 9 – 11 a.m. Sign up if you would like to play in the pitch tournament at 1:30 p.m.

Fri. Dec. 4: The noon meal for today is poured pizza, lettuce salad and dessert. We will have a pinochle at 1:30 p.m.

Mon Dec. 14: The caregiver support group will meet for lunch at 12:30 at the center. The meeting will start at 1:30, bring an interesting article that made you smile and are willing to read to the group.

Tues. Dec. 15: Tai Chi class is at 9:30 a.m. and walking club at 10:45 a.m. Come and have coffee with us in the morning. We will have a golf game tournament at 1:30 p.m. Wed. Dec. 16: There will be melody chime practice at 9:00 a.m. Christmas party begins at 2:00 p.m. with entertainment and also a few games. Bring some snacks for lunch.

Shelly Russman, 52, of Wisner NE

Shelly Russman, age 52, of Wisner, Nebraska passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 5, 2015 in her home on December 5, 2015, after a valiant fight with colon cancer.  Funeral services for will be on Wednesday, December 9, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at the Christ Lutheran Church in Wisner, NE.  Interment will be in the Bancroft Cemetery following the luncheon in the church basement.  Visitation will be on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Minnick Funeral Home in Wisner and will continue on Wednesday from 9 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.  Minnick Funeral Home in Wisner is in charge of arrangements.

Shelly Ranae (Pulfrey) Russman was born on October 15, 1963, in Britton, South Dakota, to Quinten and Elizabeth (Kenny) Pulfrey. Shelly grew up in the small town of Amherst, South Dakota, where she enjoyed attending school and dressing up her kittens in her baby doll clothing. She grew up with three siblings: two older sisters, Susan and Teresa, and a younger brother, Win.

On November 15, 1980 she married Mark Alan Russman. The couple had their first child, Tanner, and moved to Ellinwood, Kansas, where they resided for five years. Shelly then had a set of identical twin boys, Wyatt and Garrett. The couple moved back to Wisner, Nebraska, and in 1997, had their youngest child and only daughter, Keeley.

Shelly loved her family and was extremely proud of them. She enjoyed attending all her children’s and grandchildren’s activities, which included 4-H and numerous school activities. She spent countless hours in the barn helping her kids with their show cattle. She enjoyed caring for her pets, which included several chickens, dogs, and cats. Shelly also loved spending time making arts & crafts with her grandchildren, and she was constantly displaying their artwork on the refrigerator.

Shelly was a very dedicated mother, grandmother, wife, sister, sister-in-law, and mother-in-law. Family meant everything to Shelly. She fought a courageous battle, and she left behind many loving and lasting memories with everyone that she touched.

She is survived by her loving husband Mark; her children Tanner (Tami), Wyatt (Jill), Garrett, and Keeley; grandchildren Dylan, Jocelyn, Adelle, and Sawyer, all of Wisner; her sisters Susan and Teresa, and brother Win of South Dakota; her mother, Elizabeth Pulfrey, also of South Dakota; her mother-in-law, Carmen Russman, of Rosalie; and by a large, loving extended family.

Shelly was preceded in death by her father, Quinten Pulfrey; her father-in-law Dallas Russman; and an infant sister, Carrol Grace.

Today’s Market Report

Oil prices dropped to near seven-year lows today as investors continued to digest the decision to continue pumping crude at near-record levels into an already oversupplied market.  OPEC said at a meeting Friday that it will maintain its current production levels, which exceed the group’s output target of 30 million barrels a day.

 

The US Dollar posted its worst day in six years on Thursday last week dropping more than 2%, seems to bring more interest into commodities.

Corn gets a bit of a boost last week from the drop in the U.S. Dollar, but still only by a few cents.  Corn continues to chop staying in the 3.50-4.00 range since January with the exception of the short lived bounce resulting from the USDA Report in June.  So it’s not surprising we sit in the $3.75 area for March Corn.  The funds remain short corn just under 150,000 contracts.  That weather headline I continue to hope for may give us an opportunity.  I also want to again bring up the importance of the U.S Dollar and Crude prices.  At their current levels they seem to directly influence commodities.

 

Beans broke through the $9.00 resistance level last week setting the stage for resistance at the $9.15 area possibly up to $9.34.  The bean market has continued to head up for 2 straight weeks after the key reversal on Monday November 23rd.  Though the markets seems to rally for technical reasons, there are other uncertainties that may be a factor.  A newly elected president in Argentina, Brazil looking to impeach the current president, and of course weather.  Over the last two weeks we have added .65 to the price of beans.  It may be time to reward the rally.  Unless we get some additional bullish news, it’s likely we will see the upward momentum will fizzle out.

Village Board of Decatur Special Meeting
November 30th, 2015 4:00P.M.
The Board of the Village of Decatur met in a special meeting at 4:00 P.M. at the City Hall on November 30th, 2015. Visitors signing in Alta Wolf, Dale Wolf, Bob Kellogg, LeeAnn Warren, Debbie Krutilek, Gary Huffman, Nina Mussack, Steve Kellogg, Karma K Farrens, not signing in Lance Anderson and Mark Siecke

1)        The meeting was called to order by Chairman Loretta Kellogg.

2)         Agenda and minutes of the previous month’s meeting were received:

1) Nominate Vacant Seat- Kellogg stated that we had 5 candidates to fill the vacant seat. Kellogg nominated Mark Siecke. The board members reviewed his application. Mark came to the table. He stated that the board and the town are kind of divided and he hopes that he can help in the healing that division. He stated that he would like to do what is in the best thing for the town. He said that he has 12 years experience of being on the school board, 8 of which was spent as President. He has knowledge of budgets. He hopes he can help the town.

Kellogg nominated Mark Siecke 2nd by Tolby Roll call- Richards-no, Bolln-no, Kellogg-yes, Tolby-yes.

 

An audience member raised his hand, Kellogg said Lance do you have a question?   Lance voiced his concern, that we need to do what is best for Decatur, let’s put it to the vote of the people. Kellogg asked the board what their thoughts were for having a special election. Tolby stated she thought the we should put it before the tax payers. Richards stated that if it is right with the League of Municipalities it would be fine with him. Kellogg stated that we will get that checked out and if we need to call an emergency meeting we can do that also.

 

Kellogg thanked Mark for his interest.

 

2) Bids for Sale of Silver car. Kellogg stated that we had 2 bids for the silver car. Kellogg said that one is for $200 and the other one is for $800 from Justin Smith. Justin did work on the silver car totaling $502.00, and he would take that off of the payment. Richards made a motion to sell the silver car to Justin Smith 2nd by Tolby, Roll Call- Bolln-yes, Kellogg-yes, Richards-yes, Tolby-yes.

Governor Ricketts Statement on Capital Punishment

Governor Pete Ricketts issued a statement regarding capital punishment:

“In November 2016, Nebraska voters will determine the future of capital punishment in our state at the ballot box.  To give deference to the vote of the people, my administration will wait to carry out capital punishment sentences or make additional efforts to acquire drugs until the people of our state decide this issue.

“Over the last several weeks, I have stepped up conversations with the Attorney General and the Corrections Director regarding a comprehensive review of the capital punishment protocols used in other states.  My administration will continue to review potential protocol changes.”

Lillian “Tiny” Doris Bacon, 87, of Lyons, NE

Lillian “Tiny” Doris Bacon was born on September 11, 1928 in Windom, Minnesota. Her parents were Sam and Lillian (Scheldorf) Martin. Tiny’s battle with dementia took her to Oakland Heights in Oakland, Nebraska where she passed away on Friday, December 4, 2015 at the age of 87 years, 2 months and 23 days.

Tiny came to Lyons with her sister Loretta in 1946, where she met George E. Bacon. She was united in marriage to George in South Sioux City, Nebraska, on July 3, 1948.

They made their home in Lyons. In 1959, they started a business “Bacon Sodding” and built a home, she loved, in Lyons around 1969. She worked for a few years at the telephone company in Lyons as a telephone operator. She enjoyed caring for her family, cooking, baking, canning and an occasional trip to the casino.

She was a member of the Memorial United Methodist Church in Lyons.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George; daughter, Diane Fada; two sons, Kevin and Sam Bacon; two grandsons, George and Kevin Bacon; 4 brothers and sisters.

Tiny is survived by her two children: Valerie Bacon and her friend Carla Robinson of Homeland, California and Gary Bacon and his wife Kristi of Lyons; 4 grandchildren: Alan Bacon of Fremont, Cassie (Bacon) and her husband Ryan Rasmussen of Winterset, Iowa, Tiffany Fada of Auburn, Alabama, and Tyler Fada and his wife Nancy of Lyons; 6 great grandchildren: Blake Bacon, Hunter Bacon, Kennedy Bacon, Nate Bacon, Reiland Rasmussen and Cale Rasmussen; 1 sister; and many other relatives and friends.

Visitation is Sun., Dec. 6th from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Pelan Funeral Services in Lyons.

A Memorial Service will be held Mon., Dec. 7th at 3:00 p.m. at Pelan Funeral Services in Lyons.

Santa Claus is Coming to Town and A Charlie Brown Christmas

Santa will be at the Vets Building in Oakland tomorrow, Sat., Dec. 5th.  to visit with all of the girls and boys from 10:00-11:30 a.m. 

All area children are invited to celebrate A Charlie Brown Christmas in honor of the 50th anniversary since it first aired on television, and will be shown during Santa’s visit Saturday for all to enjoy. 

Also, each child will be given a copy of the book, A Charlie Brown Christmas.

This event is sponsored by the Oakland Chamber of Commerce.

Ann Gahan, 92, of Oakland NE

Ann Gahan, 92 years, of Oakland, Nebraska, passed away on December 2, 2015 at Oakland Heights Nursing Home in Oakland.

Funeral Service will be Monday, December 7, 2015, 10:30 am at St. Luke’s United Church of Christ in Columbus.   Visitation will be Sunday from 4 to 7 pm with family receiving friends and a prayer service will be at 7 pm all at Pelan Funeral Services Oakland. Visitation will also be held at the church one hour prior to service.   Burial will be in  Roselawn Cemetery in Columbus, Nebraska.   Memorials to the family for designation at a later time.

Ann was born on August 6, 1923 to Oscar and Lena (Schupbach) Blaser in Columbus, Nebraska. She was raised on a farm west of Columbus, and graduated from Kramer High School, in Columbus. After graduation, she worked at Paxton Gallager in Omaha, Nebraska.   On August 6, 1946, Ann married Robert Gahan. They started their life together in Fremont, Nebraska and California while Bob was pursuing his mortuary science degree. They lived in Lyons, Nebraska, then moved to Oakland, where they resided over 40 years. After Bob’s retirement in 1990, they moved to Columbus. In 2006 Ann moved back to Oakland. Together they raised nine children.   Ann was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a member of St. Luke’s United Church of Christ in Columbus, and attended First United Methodist Church while living in Oakland.  She enjoyed playing cards, dancing and golfing. Her favorite pastime was playing Scrabble, and she would do so with anyone and everyone who would play with her.   Ann was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bob; son, Dewaine; grandchildren, Scott and Sara; brothers, Carroll and Richard.   Survivors include her children, Dr. Karen (Bob) Tarnow of Weston, MO, Mike Gahan of Scribner, NE, Nora (Rick) Eriksen of rural Tekamah, NE, Rita (Roger) Houdersheldt of rural Shelby, NE, Dr. Janice (Ron) Rech of Blair, NE, Chris (Annette) Gahan of Lincoln, NE, Glen (Melanie) Gahan of Gretna, NE, Paul (Eileen) Gahan of David City, NE; daughter-in-law, Bobbie Gahan of Oakland; grandchildren, Brian (Jessie) Tarnow, Eric (Liz) Tarnow, Gregg (Jennifer) Gahan, Betsy (Chuck) Bitker, Joe (Brandy) Gahan, Stacey (Herb) Kennedy, Kirk (Bridget) Eriksen, Keith Eriksen, David (Ellen) Eriksen, Emily Houdersheldt, Aubrey (Bryant) Alt, Seth Houdersheldt, Andrew Rech, Caroline Rech, Natalie Rech, Hayden Rech, Ava Rech, Evan (Laura) Gahan, John Gahan, Mason Gahan, Caleb Gahan, Sarah Gahan, Leah Gahan, Olivia Gahan, Elise Gahan, Reid Gahan, Angela Gahan, Maggie Gahan, Abbie Gahan; great grandchildren, Elijah, Naomi & Hannah Gahan, Josiah & Titus Bitker, Jalen & Moxie Gahan, Karley, Brinley & Easton Eriksen, Reagan Kennedy; sister, Dorothy Streubing; sisters-in-law, Catherine Blaser, Rolaine Blaser, Marilyn Bartholomew, Helen Johnston; many nieces, nephews and friends.
