The noon potluck to be held at Golden Oaks Senior Center in Oakland NE has been cancelled for today.

Mary Ellen Sundell, 88, of Wakefield NE


Mary Ellen Sundell, 88, of Wakefield, NE, died on Tuesday, December 22, 2015, at the Wakefield Health Care Center in Wakefield, NE. Funeral services for Mary Ellen will be held on Monday, December 28, 2015, at 9:00 a.m. at Salem Lutheran Church in Wakefield; Pastors Barbara Hansen and Kathy Salts will be officiating. The visitation will be held on Sunday, from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Salem Lutheran Church with an Eastern Star and a P.E.O. service at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be in the Wakefield Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to P.E.O. Chapter CZ scholarship fund.

Mary Ellen was born December 28, 1926, in Sergeant Bluff, IA, the daughter of Elmer and Ethel (Eldridge) Kingsbury. She grew up in Sergeant Bluff, where as a young child her mother passed away and her father remarried to Uneeta Orchard. She attended and graduated from Sergeant Bluff High School, received her Bachelor’s Degree from Morningside College in Sioux City, IA, and later her Master’s Degree from Wayne State College in Wayne, NE. On December 21, 1949, she was united in marriage to Alvin Sundell in Sioux City, IA. To this union two daughters were born: Suellen and Sarilyn. The couple farmed south of Wakefield, where she taught High School for over 30 years and was NHS Advisor for many of those years.

Mary Ellen was a member of P.E.O., Wakefield American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Order of the Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile, Delta Kappa Gamma, and several community social clubs. She enjoyed many hobbies including ceramics, embroidery, needlework, word puzzles and gardening. She also had a love for reading mysteries and mythology. Most of all, Mary Ellen loved her family.

She is survived by her daughters Suellen (Lonnie) Koepke of Broken Bow, NE, and Sarilyn (Gary) Stine of Valley Center, CA. She is also survived by her granddaughters Miranda (Dan) Stoll, Marisalynn Koepke, Emily Stine, and a grandson Michael Stine, two great grandchildren Jaxen and Holley Stoll, and three nephews.

Mary Ellen was preceded in death by her parents Elmer and Ethel Kingsbury, stepmother Uneeta Kingsbury, and her husband Alvin on September 17, 2011.

Jean Louise Nichol, 63, of Tekamah NE


Jean Louise (Christensen) Nichol, age 63, was born to Arley and Harriett (Lindvall) Christensen on January 28, 1952 at St. Mary Hospital, North Platte, NE, her hometown. “Jeannie” passed away Sunday, December 27, 2015, in hospice at the Golden Living Center, in Tekamah, NE, after a long fight with cancer. Her Christmas gift is the gift of resurrection to new life through faith in Jesus.

Jeannie was baptized June 2, 1956 in St. Patrick’s Church and attended the St. Patrick’s
Elementary and Junior-Senior High Schools in North Platte, graduating in May 1970.
In April 1970, she met Duncan Nichol, who was student teaching at St. Pat’s from March to
May prior to his graduation in 1970 from the Hiram Scott College in Scottsbluff, NE. Duncan
student taught Jeannie’s class.

On Nov. 30, 1970, Jeannie enlisted in the U.S. Navy, attending boot camp in Bainbridge, MD,
before attending medical training at the Naval Station Great Lakes, IL. Jeannie was then stationed at the St. Albans Naval Hospital in St. Albans, NY, where she served as an Operating Room Technician. In 1972, she met Duncan Nichol, again who was home in Monroe, NY while on summer break from seminary. Duncan and Jeannie were engaged on July 28, 1972, and were married at the First Presbyterian Church in Fort Dodge, IA on April 27, 1973 during Duncan’s internship year. The following January, Jeannie was transferred back to Great Lakes until her honorable discharge as an HM3 on June 28, 1974.

Jeannie was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Tekamah, NE. She served as a Ruling Elder, Deacon, and a moderator of a Board of Deacons, in other churches of the Presbyterian Church (USA). Jeannie was a member of the Flatwater Waves #98, NE. She also served as a certified EMT for the Alden Fire Department of Alden, NY.

Jeannie and Duncan have served churches in Iowa, Minnesota (where their son, John, was born
March 6, 1976), Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York State and Virginia before moving from Pennsylvania to Tekamah on Dec. 1, 2008. On April 27, 2015, Duncan & Jeannie celebrated their 42nd wedding anniversary.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers Cortney Christensen and Daniel Christensen.

Jeannie is survived by her husband, Rev. Duncan H. Nichol of Tekamah; son, John C. Nichol of St. Petersburg, FL; granddaughter, Kyla Jean Nichol of Petersburg, OH; her siblings, Michael B. Christensen and his wife, Lana of Omaha, NE, Lisa A. Burkhardt and her husband Jim of Everett, WA, Loretta S. Easton and her husband Dale of North Platte, Cecelia M. Lunsford and her husband Jon of North Platte; sister-in-law, Paula Christensen of Council Bluffs; and nieces and nephews.

Visitation is Wed., Dec. 30th from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at Pelan Funeral Services in Tekamah NE.

The Funeral Service is Thurs., Dec. 31st at 10:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Tekamah, NE with Military honors. Visitation will also be held at the church one hour prior to the service.

Winter Storm Warning Cancelled, Winter Weather Advisory Until 6:00 Tuesday Morning


Winter Weather Advisory in effect until 6 am CST Tuesday… …Winter Storm Warning is cancelled… The National Weather Service in Omaha/valley has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for snow…which is in effect until 6 am CST Tuesday. The Winter Storm Warning has been cancelled.

Timing…light snow will continue across the area into tonight with periods of moderate snow this afternoon. The snow will taper to flurries after midnight.

Accumulations…snowfall is expected to be in the 1 to 3 inch range.

Impacts…travel will be impacted with roads becoming snow cover. Visibility will also be reduced in falling snow and blowing snow. Precautionary/preparedness actions… A Winter Weather Advisory for snow means that periods of snow will cause primarily travel difficulties. Be prepared for snow covered roads and limited visibilities…and use caution while driving.

Nellie A. Karlin, 88, of Fremont
died Saturday, December 26, 2015 at Nye Legacy in Fremont.

Nellie was born February 7, 1927 to Tom and Marie (Maw) Maslonka. She grew up around the Decatur/Macy area and graduated from Macy High School. After moving to Fremont, she worked at Hormel’s for several years. Nellie married Dwayne Karlin on January 16, 1955 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fremont. She volunteered in many areas of the church and community. Dwayne passed away in 2002.

Nellie is survived by daughter – Julie (Kent) Bang, grandsons Nick and Jarrod Bang, all of Omaha; brother Ed L. Maslonka of Lyons, sister Marylin (Charles) Richardson of Onawa, Iowa; sisters-in-law Ellen Karlin of Fremont and Shirley Gregerson of Omaha; many nieces and nephews.

Nellie was preceded in death, in addition to her husband Dwayne, by three brothers, Elton, Willard (Red) and Howard Maslonka; brothers-in-law, Norman, Eldon, and Herman Karlin, Doug Gregerson; sister-in-law, Evelyn Maslonka.

The funeral service will be 2 PM Wednesday (Dec. 30, 2015) at Trinity Lutheran Church. The committal will follow in Memorial Cemetery. Visitation at the Ludvigsen Mortuary in Fremont, with the family present, will be Tuesday (Dec. 29th) from 6 to 8 PM. Memorials are suggested to Trinity Lutheran Church.

Joseph G. Lemm, 45, of West Harrison NY Formerly of Beemer NE


Joseph G. Lemm, 45, of West Harrison, NY, died on December 21, 2015 from wounds received in action while serving his country in Afghanistan with the Air National guard. Born August 12, 1970 in Dubuque, IA he was the son of Charles Ronek of Dubuque, IA and Shirley Lemm of Beemer, NE. Joe attended Beemer High School in Nebraska where he excelled as an athlete in football, basketball, and track. Joe accomplished everything he strived to achieve.
After High School he enlisted in the Armed Forces serving in the United States Air Force. Promoted to the rank of Technical Sergeant, Joe served three tours of duty in both Iraq and Afghanistan with the 105th Base Defense Squadron. Throughout his military service he received numerous awards and commendations to include The Purple Heart and he is set to receive The Bronze Star Medal with Valor. In 2000 Joe wanted to continue protecting people by joining The New York City Police Department. A 16-year veteran of law enforcement Joe was a highly decorated New York City Police Officer with 590 arrests. After serving in the 48th Precinct and Bronx Street Crime Unit, Retired First Grade Detective, Danny Rivera, a longtime mentor and friend, inspired Joe to further follow his heart. On December 19, 2014 Joe was promoted to Detective serving as member of the department’s Warrant Squad. Nicknamed “superman” by friends and colleagues Joe was a gentle giant who strived to be the best in whatever he set his mind to. He enjoyed playing basketball, being on his boat, and was a true Philadelphia Eagles fan. He was also an avid hunter, outdoorsman, most of all enjoyed spending time with friends and family. Joe is survived by his wife Christine, daughter Brooke, son Ryan, father Charles (Charlotte) Ronek, mother Shirley Lemm, brother Brian Lemm, mother-in-law Jill DeGuisto, sister-in-law Kim (Travis) Arnette, niece Taylor Arnette and nephew Travis Arnette Jr., Godmother Carmela Fuca, many cousins, aunts, uncles, and numerous friends. Joe was preceded in death by his sister-in-law Karen Ann DeGuisto and friend and fellow Serviceman Staff Sgt. Todd “TJ” Lobraico. Joe would want everyone to celebrate his life listening to rock and roll. We all know Joe is watching us and will be here with us for all ETERNITY. Joe will receive an NYPD Inspector’s funeral with full military honors to be held on Wednesday, December 30th at 10:00AM at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York. Interment will follow in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, NY 10532. Reposing at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 85 Harrison Street, West Harrison, NY 10604 Tuesday, December 29th from 2-5pm and 7-9pm.
