Eva M. Spenner, 81 years, of Tekamah, Nebraska, passed away on Sunday, August 21, 2016 at Nebraska Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska.

Marian Christine (Svendsen) Wynn was born to Andrew Peter Svendsen and Henriette Jensen on July 9, 1923 in Lyons, Nebraska. She passed away August 19, 2016, at Crowell Memorial Home in Blair, Nebraska, at the age of 93 years.
Marian graduated from Lyons High School in 1940. Upon graduation, she worked for the Glen L. Martin Bomber Plant in Baltimore, Maryland. It was there that she met the love of her life, Harold Willuknight Wynn. They were married on January 27, 1943. Her devotion to her husband continued through their 69 years of marriage.
Marian and Harold lived most of their lives on a farm near Lyons, where she enjoyed cooking and taking care of her husband. She was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church, where she enjoyed singing in the choir. Marian was also Chairman of the Methodist Church Fair Kitchen for many years. In 1980 she served as Worthy Matron in Eastern Star. She will also be remembered for her years of selling Avon, winning many awards for her hard work.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold; son, Robert; sister, Pauline Going; brothers, Edward and Andrew Svendsen.
She is survived by her son, Knight (Lynn) Wynn of Highland, WI; daughter, Paula (Richard) Nelson of Blair, NE; grandsons, Christopher (Sylvia) Wynn, Eric (Laura) Wynn, Jason Nelson; granddaughter, Kirstine (Jim) Chvala; great granddaughters, Haley Wynn, Analise Wynn, Gabrielle Wynn; great grandsons, Carter Wynn, Jordan Nelson.
Marian’s great devotion to her husband, her family, and many friends was an inspiration to all who knew her, and she will be terribly missed.
The Funeral Service is Tues., Aug. 23rd at 10:30 a.m. at the Memorial United Methodist Church in Lyons, NE. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
Burial is in the Lyons Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the family for future designation.

One human West Nile Virus case has been confirmed in Elkhorn Logan Valley Public Health Department’s service area this past week. For the period 2003-2015, there were a total of 82 human cases of West Nile Virus in the health district. Most people who are infected with West Nile have no symptoms or only mild flu-like symptoms. The most common types of West Nile include West Nile fever and West Nile encephalitis. West Nile fever includes flu-like symptoms, such as fever and muscle weakness. Symptoms of West Nile encephalitis include inflammation of the brain, disorientation, convulsions, and paralysis. Less than one out of 150 people who get bitten by an infected mosquito and become infected will get seriously ill. However, people over 50 and those with weakened immune systems are especially vulnerable to the disease and are more likely to experience serious effects.
The most important way to lower your risk is to prevent mosquito bites. The public is reminded to take the following precautions:
A study recently released by the Journal of the American Medical Association shows that insect repellents that are 25% DEET can repel mosquitos for up to 8 hours and ticks for up to 5 hours with one application. The same study shows that insect repellents that are at least 5.75% Picaridin, 20% IR3535, or 30% Oil of lemon eucalyptus will last about the same amount of time.
A limited supply of FREE DEET mosquito wipes and mosquito dunks for standing water are still available at all Elkhorn Logan Valley Public Health Department locations in Wisner, Norfolk, Tekamah. Limited supplies are available as well at UNL Extension offices in each of our four counties: Madison, Stanton, Cuming, and Burt. Aluminum pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House are requested by September 15 so they can be delivered to Omaha.
Year-long collection sites are the Extension Office at the Burt County Courthouse in Tekamah and the Lied Tekamah Public Library.
This is an on-going project of the Burt County 4-H program. Over the past 16 years more than 1 million tabs have been collected.
Pull tabs from any product are accepted, including fruit, vegetables, soup, any beverage and pet food.
Tabs will be recycled and funds support the Ronald McDonald House in Omaha.
This is a “home-away-from-home” for families so they can stay near their hospitalized child at little or no cost.

At a Commission meeting on Aug. 18 in Broken Bow, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission approved fee increases to some permits and stamps.
The increase in hunt permit fees, which will take effect once they are approved by the governor, will be used for fish and wildlife management and conservation activities across the agency, such as the agency’s pheasant plan, and will help ensure quality hunting and outdoor recreation in the future. Eva Dale (Miller) Climer was born on April 13, 1927 in rural Craig, Nebraska, near the Bertha Community, to Hurley and Hattie (Patrick) Martin Miller. She passed away on August 17, 2016 at Oakland Heights Nursing Home in Oakland, Nebraska, at the age of 89 years.
Eva enjoyed horseback riding, sledding, and other outdoor activities with her childhood friends and family. She attended rural Bertha school District 36 and graduated from Oakland High School in 1944. After graduation, Eva moved to Omaha, Nebraska where she worked for Mutual of Omaha.
Eva married Donald Climer on December 3, 1945 at the First United Methodist Church in Oakland. To this union three children were born, Michael, Randal and William. In 1945, Eva and Don moved to Thurston County and began farming. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Walthill, Nebraska. In the spring of 1956, they moved to the Bertha area and continued farming. Eva was a member of the Divide Center Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday school and youth groups for many years. She was also a member of the Mariners.
After Don’s death in 1999, Eva moved to Lyons, Nebraska where she was an active member of First Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed family activities, and loved attending her grandchildren’s sports events. Eva loved her flower garden and enjoyed sewing and crocheting.
Eva was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Don; six brothers, Irvin Miller, Glen Miller, Elwood Miller, Raymond Martin, William Miller, Robert Miller; two sisters, Lula (Miller) Helms, Nadine (Martin) Simpson; one grandchild, Claude Climer.
Eva is survived by her three sons, Michael Climer of Omaha, Randal Climer of Omaha, and William (Elaine) Climer of Lyons, Nebraska; seven grandchildren Lisa (Craig Brown) Climer,
Melanie (Israel) Climer-Wilson, Mitchell Climer and Heather Carlson, William Climer Jr,
Christopher Climer, Claire Climer, Charise Climer; seven great grandchildren, Dylan Climer, Danielle Climer and Chance Wright, Reagan Wilson, Hailley Wilson, Addie Brown, Bess Brown, Kingston Climer; other relatives and friends.
Memorial Visitation is Mon., Aug. 22nd from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Pelan Funeral Services in Lyons. Family will receive friends with Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m.
The Memorial Service is Tues., Aug. 23red at 1:00 p.m. at Pelan Funeral Services in Lyons.
Burial is in the Lyons Cemetery.

Consolidation of Oakland-Craig and Tekamah-Herman Schools is a hot topic in each community.
There are many inaccurate accounts of the situation being stated from each town involved. I heard someone so upset stating Tekamah-Herman were coming to Oakland-Craig to school. I have heard others say the students from each school will not get along. This came from parents. I certainly hope parents aren’t encouraging their children to be unaccepting of other children.I find this so disappointing.
The bottom line is: ALL of us are responsible to do what is best for the children, for their education and their future. We owe it to them. They are the citizens of tomorrow, our future leaders.
I recently walked through the Burt County Fair Parade, as President of the Oakland City Council. I had many friends and family walk through with me, showing my dedication to Oakland and the community. I am running for election in November. I wanted to see people first-hand and let them know how much I care for each and every one of them.
At the end of the parade, I had a person whom I had never met, ask me what my position was on the school consolidation issue. I was quite surprised by the question, but I knew my answer immediately. I kindly told her that at this point, I was undecided. I want to take more time to review each side of the issue before making a definite decision. I also told her I think this has to be so difficult for every person on both sides of the proposal.
Since then, I have given in a great deal of thought. I do believe at some point in time, school consolidation will happen for both schools. This will be determined on the amount of state aid available to schools and how well a school can manage based upon their budget. I hope and pray that each district puts education for each student on the front burner.
If each school can provide the best of education for each child without consolidation, then I am for that. But, if that is not a possibility, then consolidation is a must.
I also want to share a memory of my own. I grew up in Tekamah. I went attended Tekamah-Herman schools through my Freshman year. Then, we moved to Oakland. I began my Sophomore year at Oakland-Craig Schools. Those that remember both schools in the year of 1978, you will remember how competitive they were in sports. They were huge rivals back then.
I was terrified to start school in Oakland-Craig. I need not worry so much. I was welcomed and made many friends whom I am still friends with today.
I also stayed friends with my Tekamah-Herman class and the teachers and staff there. I am invited back to every class reunion and just attended our 35 year reunion. I also attended my 35 year O-C class reunion the same day. It is a juggling act, but I want to see everyone! They are a big part of my life.
Basically, I went through my own school consolidation and all went fine.
If the voters approve a consolidation, I don’t worry about students getting along. I know both districts have good, caring people and each of them will come together for the sake of the children.
The children are what is most important.

Duane F. Ahlers, 77, of Rosalie, Nebraska, passed away Tuesday, August 16, 2016 at Legacy Garden Rehabilitation and Living Center in Pender, NE. Funeral services will be Friday, August 19, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rosalie, NE with Pastor Robert Johnson officiating. The visitation will be Thursday, August 18, 2016 at Munderloh-Smith Funeral Home in Bancroft, NE from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Burial with military honors will be in the Bancroft Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the family for future designation. Arrangements are under the direction of Munderloh-Smith Funeral Home in Bancroft.
Duane was born March 9, 1939 to Alfred and Mable (Soll) Ahlers on a farm north of Walthill. He was baptized April 16, 1939 and confirmed June 6, 1954 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rosalie. In May of 1957, Duane graduated from Rosalie High School. After high school, Duane enrolled in the Marine Corps and was stationed in Parris Island, SC. After returning from the service, Duane married Norma Kinning on June 7, 1964. The couple had two children, Jeffrey and Jami.
Duane farmed from 1961 until 1994, and worked at Blue Ox from 1994 until 2007. He was a member of the VFW, mayor and Rosalie Town Board member, Immanuel Lutheran Church Board, Rural Fire Board, Old Settlers Committee, Rosalie Fire Department, Rosalie Rescue Squad, and was a former Mason. Duane loved playing cards, learning everything he could about NASA, and watching Bizarre Foods, saying he could see the world without leaving his couch.
Duane is survived by his son, Jeffrey Ahlers of Sioux City, IA; daughter, Jami (Richard) Mohl of Bancroft, NE and grandsons, Stuart Mohl of Thornton, CO and Ryley Mohl of Bancroft, NE; companion, Carmen Russman of Rosalie, NE; sister, Carol (Mylon) Beutler of Bancroft, NE; brother, Larry (Diane) Ahlers of Rosalie, NE, Dennis (Betsy) Ahlers of Burnsville, MN, Gary (Naomi) Ahlers of Lincoln, NE; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is also survived by Carmen’s family; Scott (Rhonda) Russman of Farnam, NE, Terri (Todd) Alberts of St. Paul, NE, Mark Russman of Wisner, NE, Mike (Melinda) Russman of Farnam, NE, Tyler (Teresa Block) Russman of Davison, MI, 15 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and Carmen’s daughter-in-law, Shelly Russman.
