Thomas “Tom” Wesley Dorn, 65, of Tekamah NE

Thomas “Tom” Wesley Dorn was born October 31, 1951 to Lewis “Bud” and Amy (Patterson) Dorn in Blair, Nebraska. He went to be with the Lord on February 21, 2017 at the Independence House at Coddington in Lincoln, Nebraska, at the age of 65 years.

Tom grew up in Tekamah, Nebraska and graduated from Tekamah Herman High School in 1970. He married his high school sweetheart, Cecelia Ann (Chamberlain) Dorn in 1971 and they celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary this year.

Tom attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and graduated with a B.S. degree in Agriculture in 1974. He received his Master’s Degree in Agricultural Engineering in 1976. After college, Tom and Cecelia moved to southwestern Kansas where Tom was one of the first crop consultants for Servi-Tech. In 1980, they moved back to Nebraska and Tom worked for the University of Nebraska Extension office until his retirement in 2013. He took on different positions and specialties over the years for UNL Extension and worked/lived near Concord, O’Neill, Geneva and Lincoln.

In 2007, Tom received the annual award for Outstanding Service from the Nebraska Cooperative Extension Association. This award meant a great deal to Tom, as it was awarded by his peers. In 2008, Tom received the Holling Family Award for Teaching Excellence in Extension. Tom’s favorite saying for both work and personal relationships was, “They don’t care what you know unless they know that you care”.

Tom loved the outdoors and experiencing God’s wonderful creation. He also enjoyed traveling, camping, hiking, bike riding, snow skiing and water sports. He loved star gazing, fixing things and was a trivia buff. He had a witty sense of humor and could make jokes effortlessly. He was famous for his melt-in-your-mouth chocolate chip cookies and homemade bread.

Tom would say some of his fondest and most meaningful memories were when he had the opportunity to build homes for people in need in Mexico. Tom also cherished the time he spent with his kids and grandkids, he was so very proud of them.

He is survived by his wife, Cecelia; daughter, Sara (Paul) Ladd; son, John Dorn; grandchildren, Alexa Ladd and Parker Ladd; sisters, Linda Harmer, Jeanne Halsey, Barbara Devney and Pam Been.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Lucas James. We’re sure Tom and Luke are having a grand time in Heaven together right now.
