Joel “Joe” Bernard Penny, 65, of Decatur NE


Joel “Joe” Bernard Penny was born to Forrest and Lucille (Gatewood) Penny on March 15, 1952 in Oakland, Nebraska. He passed away Thursday, August 31, 2017 in Pierre, South Dakota.

Joe grew up on a farm south of Decatur, Nebraska. He worked for the railroad for a couple of years before he started farming. At the time of his death he was raising cattle and farming land around Burt County, including the original Penny family farm.

Joe loved to ride his motorcycle, hunt, and ride horses. He was an animated storyteller and would stop to visit friends spontaneously. No matter where Joe went or who he met, they wouldn’t forget meeting him. He was one of a kind.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Colt; brother-in-law, Bob Mussack.

Joe is survived by his wife, Brenda (Weston) of Decatur, daughters: Jennifer Penny of Decatur, Molly (David) Dickinson of Milford, NE, Fawn Barger of Scottsdale, AZ, Tyler Rambeau of Flandreau, SD; sons: Sage and Hawk Penny of Decatur; grandchildren: Brady, Jacqulyn and Colt Barger, Hunter, Cash and Penny Dickinson, and Jacob Fisherman; brother, Phil Penny of Decatur; sisters: Cindy Mussack of Omaha, NE, Sandy (Greg) Brummond of Craig, NE; step-sisters: Mary (Scott) Christ, Jean Wiersman; step-brother, Dan (Heidi) Mussack; his first wife Deborah Connealy; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and thousands of friends!

Visitation is Monday, September 4th from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at Pelan Funeral Services in Tekamah, NE.

Funeral services will be held at the Decatur Firehall on Tuesday, September 5th at 10:30 a.m.

Burial is in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Decatur Ne.

Memorials suggested to the family for future designation.
