Caroline (Beckmann) Zila, 67, of Thurston NE


Caroline Mae (Beckmann) Zila, 67, of Thurston, Nebraska passed away Monday, November 13, 2017 at the Pender Community Hospital in Pender, NE. Funeral services will be Saturday, November 18, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Pender: Pastor Robert Schilling will be officiating. The visitation will be Friday, November 17, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Munderloh-Smith Funeral Home in Pender. Memorials may be directed to the family for future designation. Arrangements are under the direction of Munderloh-Smith Funeral Home in Pender.

Caroline was born August 22, 1950 to Alfred and Orma (Witt) Beckmann in Pender. She graduated from Pender High School in May of 1968. Caroline married Donald Melvern Zila on December 26, 1969 at St. John’s Lutheran Church and the couple had three children.  Don and Caroline owned Zees Greenhouse for many years. She enjoyed word finds, puzzles, reading, and playing games, especially cards. Caroline loved coloring with and spending time with her grandkids and great grandkids. Caroline was a quiet, selfless woman who did anything for her family and will be greatly missed.

Caroline is survived by her husband, Don Zila of Thurston, NE; daughters, Jeanette (Maurice) Norton of West Point, NE, Patti (Mike) Owen of Omaha, NE, Christine (Mike) Krueger of Omaha, NE; sisters, Marie (Larry) Sokol, JoAnn (Scott) Henrickson, Leora (Mark) Peterson; brothers, Marlin (Ruth) Beckmann, Dale (Becky) Beckmann, Alvin (Barb) Beckmann; grandchildren, Lacy (Bobby) Dugan, Alex (Jamie) Norton, Ellen, Aiden and Libbie Owen; great grandchildren, Emma and Braden Dugan; grand-dog, Peanut Krueger; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Alfred Beckmann in November of 1997 and Orma Beckmann in September of 2016.

Memorial services for Shawn Liermann age 42 of Omaha, NE will be held on Friday, May 20, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at the Our Savior Lutheran Church in Norfolk with interment in the Wisner Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Minnick Funeral Home in Wisner.

Shawn passed away on Friday, April 29, 2016 in Omaha, NE.

Shawn Ray “Homer” Liermann was born on April 5, 1974 at West Point, NE to Larry and Marlene (Lehman) Liermann. Homer was baptized in 1974 in Beemer, NE and later confirmed in 1987 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Pilger, NE. He attended Wisner-Pilger Public Schools and attained his GED in 1993. At the age of 20, he was involved in an auto accident and for the last five years at QLI in Omaha, NE.

Homer loved to play cards, hunting, fishing, watching movies and football, and guns.

Nolan G. VonSeggern, 68, of Hooper and Uehling Area


Nolan G. VonSeggern age 68, of Hooper/Uehling area.
Died Friday January 22, 2016 at Fremont Health Medical Center

Nolan was born May 25, 1947 in West Point to Orville and Volline ‘Kienbaum’ VonSeggern. He grew up on the family farm 4 ½ miles west of Uehling, graduating from Uehling High in 1965. He married his high school sweetheart Connie Mahlendorf on September 10, 1967 in St. John’s Lutheran Church, Cuming County Line, the same church he was baptized and confirmed in. After their marriage they raised a family and farmed, the last 35 years on his family farm. Nolan served in the Army National Guard from 1965 to 1971.

Nolan was a life long member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, CCL, serving in many different ways. He was a board member of the German Mutual Insurance Company in Scribner, was a member of the Uehling Lions Club, and previously bowled in West Point and Fremont. He loved to golf with his sons and his grandkids. Nolan was an organ donor.

Nolan was preceded in death by his daughter Beth, sister and brother-in-law Carol and Dale Suhr.

The funeral is Wednesday 10:30am at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Cuming County Line. Bob Ball and Rev. Joel Schroeder will officiate. Burial in St. John Lutheran Cemetery. Memorials will be determined later. Visitation is Tuesday from 3pm to 8pm with the family receiving friends from 6pm to 8pm at Ludvigsen’s Hooper Funeral Chapel in Hooper.

Kenneth Groskurth, 77, of South Sioux City, NE formerly of Pender, NE passed away Sunday, March 30, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, IA. Graveside services will be held Thursday, April 3, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the Bancroft Cemetery in Bancroft, NE; with Pastor Robert Schilling from St. John’s Lutheran Church officiating. A luncheon will follow at St. John’s Lutheran Church in rural Pender. Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 2, 2014 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with the family present from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service starting at 6:00 p.m. at Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home in Pender, NE. Kenneth Groskurth

Kenneth was born December 3, 1936 to Clarence and Alice (Schmidt) Groskurth. He graduated from Pender High School. He married Bonnie Krueger at St. John’s Lutheran Church on April 9, 1961. To this union, two children were born; Bill and Kevin. Ken enjoyed reading, taking walks, biking, and mowing. He was an avid card player, he especially enjoyed playing Pitch and Sheepshead.  Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his granddaughter and going out to eat. Ken served as a volunteer fireman while living in Pender. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Pender. Ken was a truck driver for Rink Manufacturing and Lorensen Ready Mix, he also worked for the City of Pender. He later worked for Chesterman Bottling Company in Sioux City, IA.

Ken is survived by his sons; Bill (Debra) Groskurth of Hinton, IA and Kevin (Kelly) Groskurth of Treynor, IA, sister-in-law Mary Lou Groskurth of Beemer, NE, and one grandchild; Regina.

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife; Bonnie, and brother; Dale.
