Betty Jean Krutilek, 88, of Oakland NE

Betty Jean was born on July 21, 1927 in Emmetsburg Iowa. She entered into eternal rest with her family at her bedside on September 24, 2015.

Betty’s early childhood was an interesting turn of events that Betty enjoyed sharing. Her birth parents brought Betty into a family of 20 brothers and sisters. Within her first year of being Freida Mae Langfitt, her birth parents made a hard decision and took their two youngest daughters to an orphanage in Iowa giving the 2 little girls up for adoption. Within a short time the two little girls were split up and at the time Frieda Mae was renamed Betty Jean after being adopted by Bill and Emma Hell. She started her new life on a farm in Elkhorn, NE where her parents ran a butcher shop and grocery business with their daughter in Elkhorn.

Betty Jean grew up without any brothers and sisters, but she was the pride and joy of her adoptive parents. During her childhood years she loved music and took dancing lessons. Her beautiful voice, along with her piano and organ talents were enjoyed by many throughout her life. Betty attended school in Elkhorn and graduated from Elkhorn High School.

After Graduation Betty became a beautician and shared her style and grace with her clients.

She met Walter Krutilek, but their courtship was interrupted when Walter left to serve in the Army overseas. When Walt returned in January of 1946, he and Betty continued their relationship. Betty was quick to say that she knew she was destined to be “Sonny’s” wife. (The nickname Walt’s family and friends knew him by).

On June 1, 1946 Walt and Betty were married and they began their life together on Betty’s parents’ farmland. To this union, six children were born. Later Betty’s father sold the farmland to the Gottsch family and the land is now known as The Indian Hills Golf course.

Betty and her family moved to a farm near Waterloo, NE. In 1966 the family moved to a farm by Oakland, NE. They continued to raise their family here, living on the farm West of Oakland. Betty helped with the farming operation and worked at the Lyons Nursing Home for a short time, sharing her compassion with the residents while helping to earn some additional income to get through a time of a struggling farm economy. In 1991, Walt and Betty retired and moved into a home in Oakland.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Walter, and three of her children; Sally, Tom, and Gary.

Betty is survived by three of her six children and their spouses, Charles (Debbie) of Decatur, NE, Nancy (Dale) Launsby of Omaha, NE, Dennis of Lincoln, NE; and her daughter-in-law, Joann Krutilek of Oakland. She was also blessed with 17 Grandchildren and 13 Great-Grandchildren. Her family also consists of numerous nieces and nephews.
