William “Bill” Harold Greve, 76, of Wayne formerly of Wakefield, Nebraska passed away Thursday, August 27, 2015 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, NE. Funeral services will be Monday, August 31, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Salem Lutheran Church in Wakefield, NE; Pastor Bill Kober will be officiating. Visitation will be Sunday, August 30, 2015 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Salem Lutheran Church with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be in Wakefield Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the family for future designation. Arrangements are under the direction of Bressler – Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home in Wakefield, NE.

Bill was born June 24, 1939 to John and Evelyn (Laase) Greve in Wakefield, NE. He was baptized July 9, 1939 and confirmed March 29, 1953, both at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in rural Wakefield, NE. He graduated from Wakefield High School in 1956. On February 8, 1959, Bill was united in marriage to Elaine Thomsen at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Pender, NE.

Bill sold Archer Oil and was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Wakefield and was a longtime usher. He received the 4-H 40 year plaque from the county fair and also the 50 year pin from Archer Oil.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine of Wayne, NE; sons, Wes (Pennie) Greve of Wakefield, NE; daughters, Linda (Rod) Gilliland of Wakefield, NE, Deb (Roger) Leonard of Pender, NE; sisters, Tootie (Eugene) Bartels of Wakefield, NE, Shirley (Dennis) Ronspies of Pierce, NE, six grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.

Bill is preceded in death by his parents; two infant daughters; three brothers, Henry, John, Jr., Dean; infant brother, Eldon; great granddaughter, Maria; and sister-in-law, Lois Greve.

Erna Backowies, 97, of Pender NE


Erna Kaethe Frieda (Stock) Backowies, 97, of Pender, Nebraska passed away Friday, August 28, 2015 at Legacy Garden Living Center in Pender. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Pender; Pastor Miles Ruch will be officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Monday, August 31, 2015 at Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home in Pender with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be in St. Mark’s Lutheran Church Cemetery in rural Pender. Memorials are suggested to the family for future designation. Arrangements are under the direction of Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home in Pender.

Erna was born March 23, 1918 in Freiburg, Germany to Johannes and Sofie (Lorenz) Stock. She attended and graduated from high school in 1936, in Lahr, Germany. From 1941-1945 Erna was a teacher in the Landjahr, a youth camp for young girls. She worked with her parents in their drug store on Markt Plaz in Lahr. In 1958, Erna worked as a stewardess on a ship to come visit a friend in Nebraska. She them met Robert Backowies, and was engaged after 10 days. On August 7, 1958 they were married in the Burgheimer Kirche in Lahr, Germany. To this union the couple had one daughter. They farmed outside of Pender until Roberts’ death in 2002. Erna then moved to Pender and resided at the Town Centre apartments, and later Legacy Garden Living Center.

Erna was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church and the WELCA. She enjoyed traveling, reading, sewing and playing the piano. Erna spent a lot of time outside in her garden and with her cats. She enjoyed being a farm wife raising cattle, sheep, and chickens. At Legacy Garden she spent her time playing bingo, writing letters on her typewriter, and playing solitaire on her laptop.

Erna is survived by her daughter, Katie (Scott) Darling of Pender; grandson, Jonathan Darling of Pender; granddaughter, Candice Darling of Pender; niece, Theresa (Wolfgang) Mueller of Flensburg, Germany.

Erna is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Hans and Albert.

Connie Kirkpatrick, 68, of Wakefield, Nebraska died on Wednesday, August 26, 2015 at Providence Medical Center in Wayne, Nebraska. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, August 29, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at the Wakefield Evangelical Covenant Church in Wakefield, NE; Pastor Kelly Johnston will be officiating. The visitation will be held on Friday from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Bressler – Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home in Wakefield, with a prayer service and Eastern Star Service at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be at a later date in the Wakefield Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the family for future designation. Arrangements are under the direction of Bressler – Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home in Wakefield, NE.

Connie Lee Stump was born to Charles E. (Bus) and Arla O. (Johnson) Fisher on May 28, 1947, in Holdrege Nebraska. At the age of two she moved to Lexington, NE with her mother and step-father Melvin Stump. Connie graduated from Lexington Senior High School in 1965. On May 15, 1965 she was united in marriage to John D. Kirkpatrick, Jr. and they had one daughter, Christina. The early years of marriage were spent as a military wife at various stateside assignments and also in Naples, Italy and Frankfurt, Germany. While stationed in Frankfurt she worked for the Corp of Engineers (1977-1980) in the housing referral office. In 1980 they returned to Cozad, NE after his retirement. She began her banking career in 1984. They divorced after 38 years due to life altering changes. She was a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church in Wakefield, NE., and Women Ministries and served on the Deacon Board.

Connie was a life time member and Past Matron of Eastern Star Chapter No. 1 of Frankfurt, Germany. She was for many years a member of the Leather and Lace Square Dance Club holding every office multiple times as well as offices with the Northeast Nebraska Federation of Square and Round Dancing. Connie enjoyed being part of the Elderfest Celebration, and assisting Wayne Eastern Star Chapter with fund raisers. She had dual membership and served various offices in the Wayne Chapter.

Connie retired from the State Nebraska Bank & Trust Company December 2012. In June of the same year she met the gentleman who was to become her true life partner, Don Dinslage. She treasured their love and commitment they had for each other. They had 7 granddaughters between them. Taking drives in the corvette with Don were special highlights. Connie enjoyed spending time with her family and large circle of friends. She also enjoyed camping with close friends, counted cross stitch and golf.

She is survived by her life partner, Don Dinslage, daughter Christina (Randy) Cope of South Dakota and granddaughters Courtney, Alexis & Morgan Heyden. Brother, Ron Stump of Lincoln and niece Elizabeth Stump of Lincoln. Don’s daughter and son-in-law, Mary & Jon Whittemore, granddaughters Lucy, Mallory, Dottie & Abbie of Ft. Calhoun, Nebraska.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Phillip Teeters, 79, of Decatur NE


Phillip O. Teeters, 79 of Decatur died Tuesday, August 25, 2015 at Providence Medical Center in Wayne, Nebraska.

Phillip was born August 8th, 1936 in the river bottoms near Decatur, Nebraska to Gregory and Joyce (Hughes) Teeters. They moved to a farm near Winnebago, Nebraska where Phillip graduated from Winnebago High School in 1954.

On October 20th, 1957 Phillip married Lucille Calkins and lived in Walthill, Nebraska where they had the first two of four children. They lived for a short while in Portland, Oregon where their third child was born then moved back to Walthill where they had their fourth.

Phillip was a mechanic most of his professional life. He co-owned and ran Teeters Garage with his father for many years. After selling the business Phillip worked at Great Plains Lumber then Walthill Farm Equipment and Bancroft-Rosalie elementary school before retiring. Phillip and Lucille spent a year in Greeley, Colorado before moving back to Nebraska and settling in Decatur where he took tolls at the Decatur Bridge. Phillip officially retired when the bridge stopped taking tolls.

Phillip enjoyed hunting, fishing, mushroom hunting, boating and camping on “his” river. Many a story at the “old camp”, and the camp at the Decatur Marina, center around him. He was an avid Husker fan and enjoyed spending time with friends and his grandchildren.

Phillip was a proud member of the Grand Lodge A.F. & A.M. of Nebraska, Olive Branch Lodge No. 274 for over 50 years.

Phillip is survived by his wife; daughter, Teri (Alvin) Terry of Colorado Springs, CO; sons, Tom (Peggy) Teeters of Eagan, MN, Trevor Teeters of Bancroft; 5 grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Gregory Jr; sister, Sharon (Huffman); son, Tracy.

MEMORIAL SERVICE: Saturday, August 29, 2015, 11:00 am, at United Methodist Church in Decatur.

NO VISITATION

BURIAL: at a later date, Hillcrest Cemetery in Decatur.

Mildred Johnson, 94, of Pender NE Formerly of Fremont NE


Mildred Irene Johnson, 94 years, of Pender, NE formerly of Fremont, NE died Tuesday, August 25, 2015 at Legacy Garden Rehabilitation and Living Center in Pender, NE.

Mildred was born May 3, 1921 in Lyons, NE to Gilbert and Bertha(Froid)Swanson. She grew up in Lyons and was a 1939 graduate of Lyons High School. Mildred married Virgil L. Johnson on May 13 1939 in Elk Point, S.D. The couple lived at Lyons until moving to Fremont in 1948. Mildred worked at the former Humpty Dumpty Nursery School in Fremont for 5 years. She was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary where she volunteered for many years. She was proud to receive the “Eagles Family of the Year” and “Mother of the Year” from the Fremont Eagles Club. She was also a member of the V.F.W. Post #854 Auxiliary in Fremont. Mildred moved to West Point, NE in 2007 and then moved to Pender, NE two years ago. She enjoyed dancing and won several dance contests.

Mildred is survived by 4 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren and 9 great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Virgil, who died May 2, 1992; daughter, Irene Olson; and numerous brothers and sisters.

Funeral service will be 1 PM, Thursday, August 27th, at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont, NE. Closed casket visitation on Thursday 1 hour prior to services. Burial will be at Memorial Cemetery in Fremont. Memorials may be given to the Fraternal Order of Eagles #200 and the V.F.W. Post #854 both of Fremont.
