Violet C. (Johnson) Robison, 95, of Pender


Violet C. (Johnson) Robison, 95, passed away on February 26, 2017 in Omaha, Nebraska.  Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 3, 2017 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Pender; with Pastor Beverly Rautenberg-Panko officiating.  Visitation will be held 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 2, 2017 at Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home in Pender. Burial will be in the Rosehill Cemetery in Pender.  In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church or the Pender Public Library.  Arrangements are under the direction of Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home in Pender.

Vi was born on September 2, 192l at home on a farm near Pender, Nebraska to William and Frances (Brandt) Weddingfeld.  She was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church and later became a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran church.

She graduated from Pender High School. She earned a teaching degree at Wayne State College and began teaching near Walthill, Nebraska.  During World War II, she worked at a defense plant in Omaha making crystals for walkie-talkie radios.  Vi married Harry Johnson, Jr. on February 2, 1946.

Vi returned to teaching in the 1960s.  She taught in several rural districts in the surrounding Pender area.  She was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church where she enjoyed quilting and bible study with her Circle group.  She was an active member of ESA for many years.  Vi loved to dance and loved to tell the story that her first husband Johns learned to dance so he could date her.  Vi loved to read and travel abroad.  Her other love was gardening.  Planting and weeding in her garden until she was 91 years old kept her young and active.
Vi is survived by her daughters, Melodye (Dale) Olson of Omaha, NE, Meridee (Alan) Richards of Chicago, IL, Marvalee (Art) Nakata of Thornton, CO; five grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; Cory (Catherine) Olson and their daughters, Sophia and Samantha; Ryan (Liza) Olson; Bret Olson and his daughters, Mackenzie and Josie; Kate (Mike) Wheeler and their daughters, Rose and Keira; Zachary Richards and his son Scott; and her only surviving sibling  William Weddingfeld, Jr.
Preceding Vi in death were her parents; her first husband Harry Johnson, Jr. and her second husband Harry Robison; brothers, Wilbur and  Merlyn Weddingfeld; sisters, Madeline Barker, Myra Watson, Betty Bressler, Genene Busch; an infant brother; grandson Bret Olson’s wife Sarah.

Walter Eugene Bolln, 75, of Decatur, NE died on Sunday, June 26, 2016 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, NE.

Bev (Behlers) Kai, 75, of Las Vegas, NV, formerly of Pender, NE, passed away Sunday, February 7, 2016 at Centennial Hills Hospital in Las Vegas, NV. Funeral services will be Friday, February 19, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church of Pender; Pastor Miles Ruch will be officiating. Bev was born October 16, 1940 in Walthill, NE to Irene and C. Dale Behlers. She graduated from Hubbard High School. Bev was united in marriage to Roy Kai on June 28, 1959 in Pender, NE. She was a homemaker, worked at Pender Community Hospital and First National Bankcard in Wayne, NE. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.

Bev is survived by her husband, Roy of 56 years; son, Michael of Stanton, NE; daughter and son-in-law Jill Kai Lysgaard and Kent Lysgaard; daughters Mary Kay Esser of Las Vegas, NV; sister, Marlene (Pat) Nelson of Lyons, NE; grandchildren Jake and Alyse Lysgaard, Dallas and Cole Esser, Ashley Kai Kauzlarich, Sarah and Tyler Kai; three great-grandchildren, Zachary, Alleana, and Andrew; two sisters-in-law, Joanne (Bill) Burling and Geraldine (Merlin) Behlers; one brother-in -law, Bob (Shirley) Oberg, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Bev was preceded in death by her beloved son, Jay; her parents, Dale and Irene Behlers; her parents-in-law, Rudy and Mildred Kai; brothers, Merlin, Charles, Warren, Dallas and Douglas; sisters-in-law, Jackie (Bill) Gilfert and Shirley (Bob) Oberg; brother-in-law, Bill Burling; niece, Jody Oberg Callahan; and nephew, Guy Burling.

Erna Backowies, 97, of Pender NE


Erna Kaethe Frieda (Stock) Backowies, 97, of Pender, Nebraska passed away Friday, August 28, 2015 at Legacy Garden Living Center in Pender. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Pender; Pastor Miles Ruch will be officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Monday, August 31, 2015 at Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home in Pender with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be in St. Mark’s Lutheran Church Cemetery in rural Pender. Erna was born March 23, 1918 in Freiburg, Germany to Johannes and Sofie (Lorenz) Stock. She attended and graduated from high school in 1936, in Lahr, Germany. From 1941-1945 Erna was a teacher in the Landjahr, a youth camp for young girls. She worked with her parents in their drug store on Markt Plaz in Lahr. In 1958, Erna worked as a stewardess on a ship to come visit a friend in Nebraska. She them met Robert Backowies, and was engaged after 10 days. On August 7, 1958 they were married in the Burgheimer Kirche in Lahr, Germany. To this union the couple had one daughter. They farmed outside of Pender until Roberts’ death in 2002. Erna then moved to Pender and resided at the Town Centre apartments, and later Legacy Garden Living Center.

Erna was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church and the WELCA. She enjoyed traveling, reading, sewing and playing the piano. Erna spent a lot of time outside in her garden and with her cats. She enjoyed being a farm wife raising cattle, sheep, and chickens. At Legacy Garden she spent her time playing bingo, writing letters on her typewriter, and playing solitaire on her laptop.

Erna is survived by her daughter, Katie (Scott) Darling of Pender; grandson, Jonathan Darling of Pender; granddaughter, Candice Darling of Pender; niece, Theresa (Wolfgang) Mueller of Flensburg, Germany.

Erna is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Hans and Albert.

Roger D. Ross, 75, of Pender NE


Roger D. Ross, 75, Pender, passed away December 16, 2014 at the Pender Community Hospital in Pender, NE. A memorial service will be held Friday, December 19, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Pender, NE; Pastor Miles Ruch will be officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, December 18, 2014 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Pender, NE from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. with a Masonic and prayer service starting at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church Cemetery. Roger was born April 3, 1939 to Don and Iva Mae (Huffman) Ross in Homer, NE. He graduated from Dakota City High school in 1957. Roger married Faye Christiansen on May 23, 1959 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Pender, NE. To this union, the couple had three children.

Roger was a member of the Abu Bekr Shrine and a Mason in the Omadi Lodge #5 in South Sioux City, NE, and St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. He enjoyed doing carpentry work and being outside gardening, fishing and camping. Roger loved spending time with his family and riding his scooter.

Roger is survived by his wife, Faye; sons, Roger Scott Ross of Pender, NE, Colin Ross of South Sioux City, NE; daughter, Shawn (Alan) Doht of Pender, NE, sister, Charlotte Doenhoefer of Dakota City, NE; sister-in-laws, Faye Christiansen of Pender, NE, Elaine Christiansen of Pender, NE, Jill Christiansen of Pender, NE, Sharon Buchholz of Pender, NE; brother-in-laws, Joel Christiansen of Lincoln, NE, Myron “Butch” Christiansen of Columbus, NE, Mert (Debbie) Christiansen of Pender, NE, many nieces and nephews; and two grandchildren, Alex Doht of Omaha, NE, and Eric Doht of Wisner, NE.

Robert Leonard, 91 of Pender, NE


Robert Leonard, 91, of Pender, Nebraska died on Saturday, March 15, 2014 at the Pender Community Hospital in Pender. Funeral services for Bob will be held on Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church; Pastor Miles Ruch will be officiating. The visitation will be held on Monday from 3:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the Munderloh-Smith Funeral Home of Pender. The family will be present to greet friends from 4:30 until 7:00 p.m. Burial with military honors will be in the Rosehill Cemetery of Pender. Robert (Bob) Leonard was born in Wayne County, Nebraska on December 20, 1922, the son of Carl and Anna (Bressler) Leonard. He attended Pleasant Valley Church until 1956, when he became a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Pender. Bob attended District #1 Country School (also known as “Bloody One”) in Wayne County, graduating from Wakefield High School in 1941. Bob farmed with his family until entering the United States Navy in 1944. He proudly served his country on a minesweeper as a Fireman 1st Class during WW II. After being discharged in 1946, Bob returned home, where he farmed with his family. It was during this time he met Marilyn Kai of Pender. Bob and Marilyn were married in Walthill, Nebraska on April 2, 1950. They lived on the farmstead they built until 2000, when they retired and moved to Pender. Bob and Marilyn were blessed with four children: Logene, Kris, Roger and Mike.

During his lifetime, he enjoyed many things. Some of his accomplishments include, serving on District #15 School board, a longtime member of the Thurston American Legion, where he served as commander for a time, and as a member of the Pender VFW. Bob was an award winning wine connoisseur, which brought happiness to many people. For a time, he shared his passion for woodworking with his son Mike, operating the “Slack-Time Shoppe”. You could often find him in the Sandhills of Nebraska doing his part in the day to day operations of a cattle herd. Many lambs were nurtured by his caring hands. He will be missed by anyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Robert is survived by his wife Marilyn of Pender, NE, daughters Logene (Chuck) Bach of Thurston, NE, Kris (Brad) Stewart of Wayne, NE, sons Roger (Deb) Leonard of Pender, Mike (Becky) Leonard of Wayne, NE, eleven grandchildren sixteen great grandchildren, a brother Samuel Leonard of Wayne, NE and numerous nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law.

He was preceded in death by his parents Carl and Anna and in-laws Art and Florence Kai, a sister Marge Hyde and three brothers Cornelius “Bub”, Jim and Jeff Leonard, and sisters-in-law Frances Leonard and Ruth Leonard, brothers-in-law Webb Hyde, LeRoy Giese, and Norman Surber, three nieces Barb Leonard, Tina Prokop, Shelley Prokop, and a great granddaughter Maria Leonard.
