David W. Smith, age 44, of Uehling, Nebraska passed away on Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at the Fremont Area Medical Center.

Funeral services are pending at the Minnick Funeral Home in West Point.

Gerald F. Weeces, 87, of Tekamah NE


Gerald F. Weeces was born to Claude and Agnes (Pond) Weeces, October 6, 1927 on a farm south of Craig, Nebraska.  He passed away June 9, 2015 at CHI Health Immanuel Hospital in Omaha surrounded by loved ones.

Gerald attended country school and Craig High School, graduating in 1945, and enlisting in the Navy in September of the same year.  He had many great experiences while in the Navy with times being spent in San Francisco and Guam. He was honorably discharged in September of 1948.

1949 was the year that he met the love of his life, Yvonne Sass, at a dance in Uehling, Nebraska.  They married March 5, 1950 sharing their love of dancing, auctions, rental properties, a thrift store in Tekamah, Nebraska and their large family all during the 65 years of their marriage to one another.  The couple also embraced their life of farming, raising crops and livestock.  It was a wonderful place, this farm west and north of Tekamah, to raise their children Kathy, Mike, Carol, Tim, Annette and Mark.  The family was always happily busy.

Gerald and Yvonne eventually moved to Tekamah, and in the last couple of years, Gerald has resided at Carter Place in Blair, Nebraska, where he has been content to live his life, following a stroke many years ago. He and Yvonne made many friends there due to the loving care they received.

He is preceded in death by a son, Michael Gerald; son-in-law, Richard Drummond; parents, Claude and Agnes; in-laws, Claus and Calista Sass; sister, Elaine Weeces; brother-in-law, Arthur Sass.

Gerald is survived by his wife, Yvonne; three daughters and two sons along with their spouses, Kathy Drummond of Excelsior Springs, MO, Carol (Kent) Petersen of Blair, Annette (Lance) Bliss of Tekamah, Tim (Terri) Weeces of Minden, NE and Mark of Tekamah; grandchildren, Robin (Joe) Pond, Kristi (Kevin) Rhine, Holly (Aaron) Schleif, Gabe (Emily) Petersen, Luke (Sarah) Petersen, Hilary (Nick) Cemer, Nolan Weeces, Keith Weeces, Niles (Dawn) Bliss, Abigail Bliss, Parker Bliss, Ryan (Jilliane) Hansen, Preston Weeces.  Gerald also has 17 great grandchildren.

This man will be lovingly missed…

Henry “Hank” George Puls, Jr., 87, of Pender, NE, passed away Monday, June 8, 2015 at Pender Community Hospital in Pender, Nebraska. Funeral services will be Friday, June 12, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Pender, NE; with Pastor Miles Ruch officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, June 11, 2015 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Pender from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 p.m. Burial with military honors will be at St. Mark’s Lutheran Cemetery in Pender. Memorials may be directed to the family for future designation. Munderloh-Smith Funeral Home in Pender, NE are in charge of arrangements.

Henry was born September 29, 1927 to Henry and Margaret (DeGroat-Manning) Puls in rural Pender. He was baptized July 7, 1928 at St. Peter’s German Lutheran Church. He graduated from Pender in 1944. After graduating, Henry joined the Navy October 21, 1944 and was honorably discharged July 9, 1946. On June 19, 1949, Henry married Jeanette Schmeckpeper in Pender, NE. The couple had three children. Henry was the owner of Thurston Pool Hall and worked at Merry Grain and Lumber in Thurston, NE. He also was a farmer and a rural mail carrier. Henry loved fishing, gardening, and spending time with his family.

Henry is survived by his daughters, Patricia (Gary) Brehmer of Ponte Vedra, FL, Theresa (Andy) Anderson of Emerson, NE; daughter-in-law, Mary Kay Puls of Geneva, NY; grandchildren, Ryan Brehmer, Greta (Doug) Kraemer, Angie (Barry) Mathewson, Kimberly (Greg) Hasenkamp, Andrea Puls, Jill (Joe) Bisenius, Megan Puls, Gretchen Puls, and Alex Bottolfsen; and great grandchildren, Ashley, Garrett, and Logan Kraemer, Gabriella and Finnegan Hasenkamp, Daphne and Gwynn Mathewson, and Kensie Bisenius; sister-in-laws and brother-in-laws, Joyce Puls of Des Moines, IA, Arlene Manning of West Point, NE, Stella Puls of Pender, NE, Bev Fritz of Sioux City, IA, Lorna (Terry) Wingett of Thurston, NE, Linda (Warren) Burmester of Pender, NE, Carolyn Schmeckpeper of Pender, NE, Gail (Bill) Harrison of Wakefield, NE, Gordon (Margaret) Schmeckpeper of Sioux City, IA, and many nieces and nephews.

Morris was born September 1, 1924 in Pender, NE to John and Bernice (Smith) Kelly. Morris was baptized at the United Methodist Church in Thurston and attended Thurston School. On January 11, 1948 Morris married Cleone Carlsten at the Methodist Church in Lyons, NE. The couple had two children.

Morris was a member of the United Church of Pender, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Thurston Fire and Rescue, and Thurston Town Board. He was also a member of the Thurston School Board and the Nebraska Winnebago Club. Morris loved to dance and camp. Working was his favorite hobby.

He is survived by his wife, Cleone Kelly of Pender, NE; son, Ron (Wanda) Kelly of Thurston, NE; daughter, Maureen (Terry) Thompson of Clive, IA, brothers, William (Gladys) Kelly of Castle Rock, CO, Myron (Alice) Kelly of Thurston, NE; four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Morris is preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Gerald Kelly.

Ruby Ruth Hayes, 97, of Tekamah NE


Ruby Ruth Hayes was born to Lew and Stella (Mayberry) Tranmer April 30, 1918 in Decatur, Nebraska. She entered into eternal rest on June 6, 2015 at the Golden Living Center in Tekamah, Nebraska, where she had made her home for the last 5 years.

She graduated from Riverside High School in 1935. She then attended Dana College where she earned her teaching certificate.

She married Maurice Hayes October 3, 1938 in Logan, Iowa. They farmed in the Silver Creek and Bertha areas before retiring to Tekamah.

Ruby loved to cook, sew, and garden. She was also an avid reader, and would read multiple books at a time.

She was a past member of the Riverside Baptist Church and a current member of the First Baptist Church in Tekamah.

Ruby was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice Hayes; infant daughter; son, Rodney Hayes; sons-in-law, Harvey Barger and Ron Havelka; 3 brothers; two sisters.

Survivors include her daughters, Carol Barger of Tekamah, and Beth Havelka of Malmo, NE; grandchildren, Karolyn (Larry) McElroy of Lyons, NE, Robin (Steve) Cass, Lynn (Duane) Magill, Tami Miller all of Tekamah, Cassie (Kyle) Thelen of Lincoln, NE; step grandchildren, Mike Barger of Oakland, NE, and Leann (Mike) Hoeper of Tekamah; great grandchildren, Josh (Maggie) McElroy of Blair, NE, Darl (Sarah) Beck of Tekamah, Jarrod (Brandy) McElroy of Lyons, Amanda (Jake) Aronson of Tekamah, Sammy Miller of Tekamah, Emmi Thelen of Lincoln; step great grandchildren, Sachia Barger, Brittany Hoeper, Ryan Hoeper; 5 great great grandchildren; 2 step great great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

Dennis Daniel Gatzemeyer, 66, of Bancroft NE


Dennis Daniel Gatzemeyer, 66, of Bancroft, Nebraska passed away Friday, June 5, 2015 at Pender Community Hospital in Pender, NE. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at Holy Cross Catholic Church, with Father Paul Ortmeier celebrating Mass. Visitation will be held 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Monday, June 8, 2015 at Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home in Bancroft. Burial with military honors will be in the Bancroft Cemetery in Bancroft. Memorials may be directed to the family for future designation. Arrangements are under the direction of Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home in Bancroft, NE.

Dennis was born on September 27, 1948, in Pender Nebraska to Lawrence and Hazel (Castor) Gatzemeyer. He was baptized and confirmed at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Bancroft. He attended and graduated from Bancroft High School and soon after enlisted in the US Army serving for 2 years. After returning from war, he married Nancy Ann Kohl on July 10, 1971 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Beemer, NE. To this union they had 5 children, Matthew, Jason, Jeremy, Jessica, and Joshua.

In 1990, he attended Cheyenne Areo Tech where he received his diploma in Aviation Mechanics. Dennis loved working on tractors, tractor pulling and playing cards with family.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Nancy Gatzemeyer of Bancroft, NE; sons, Matthew Gatzemeyer, Joshua Gatzemeyer, and Jason (Jenny) Gatzemeyer all of Bancroft, NE, Jeremy Gatzemeyer of West Point, NE; daughter, Jessica (Justin) Brichacek of Bancroft, NE; 10 grandchildren; brothers, Jim Gatzemeyer of Bellevue, NE, and Gary Gatzemeyer of Bancroft, NE; sisters, Myra (Kent) Bunderson and Deloise (Delwyn) Pearson both of Oakland, NE; and sisters-in-law Erma Gatzemeyer of Bancroft, NE, and Janice Gatzemeyer of Omaha, NE.

He is proceeded in death by his parents Lawrence and Hazel, his brothers Loren “Shorty” Gatzemeyer, and Pat Gatzemeyer.
