Zack Townsend, age 28, formerly of Tekamah, Nebraska passed away Monday January 15, 2018 in Columbia, South Carolina.

Memorial services will be on Wednesday, January 24, 2018, at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Tekamah with Military Honors follow services at the church.

Memorial visitation will be held Wednesday morning one hour prior to service, at the church.   Memorials to the family for later designation.

Gary Garland Townsend, 73, of Tekamah NE


Gary Garland Townsend 73 of Tekamah, Nebraska, passed away at his home surrounded by his family October 13, 2017. Gary was born February 25, 1944 in Sioux City, Iowa.

Gary lived most of his childhood in Sioux City. In 1961, he enlisted in the Army. While serving 6 years in the army he spent three years of that in Germany before returning to the states. While stationed in Fort Knox, Kentucky, he met his future wife and on June 15, 1966, Gary married Alta Carman. Together the couple raised seven children.

Gary worked as a diesel mechanic most of his life which brought the family to Tekamah in 1974. He also worked as a farm hand for many years after he retired. He also had a bait shop business that he enjoyed for many years at summit lake. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards and eating candy. Gary never met a stranger. He could always be found with friends or family telling a good story or joke. Gary also enjoyed gambling.

Gary was preceded in death by parents, Richard and Udith; brothers: William, Kurt and Marvin; sister, Roxanne; sons: Norman and George; daughter, Theanna; and three grandchildren.

He is survived by his sons: Robert (Kelly) Camron of Omaha, NE, Leroy Townsend of Tekamah; daughters: Linda Sergio of Texas, Udith (Art) Johnson of Craig, NE; brothers: Kevin Dickerson of Sioux City, Dick Dickerson and Kruse Dickerson both of Kentucky; sisters: Deb Mead and Delores (Jim) Browne both of Sioux City; twenty grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and his partner, Vineta Knudsen.

John J. Hovendick, 79, of Tekamah, NE


John J. Hovendick, age 79, of Tekamah, Nebraska passed away February 3, 2017, at the Tekamah Care and Rehabilitation Center in Tekamah, after calling it his home for seven years, at the age of 79 years.Funeral services will be on Wednesday, February 8, 2016, 10:30 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Tekamah.  Burial with Military Honors will be in the Tekamah Cemetery, Tekamah.  Visitation will be held Tuesday, 5-7 p.m. with family receiving friends at Pelan Funeral Services Tekamah.  Visitation will also be held at the church one hour prior to service.  Memorials are suggested to the family to be designated at a later date.  Pelan Funeral Services in Tekamah in charge of arrangements.

John Howard Hovendick was born April 4, 1937 to Howard and Fae (Roth) Hovendick in Tekamah, Nebraska, at his grandparents’ home.  He attended Pleasant Hill School through the 8th grade. He graduated from Tekamah High School in 1954. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in the spring of 1959. After his service, he returned to the farm until 1969, when he moved to Papillion and worked as a draftsman for the Corps of Engineers.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Fae Hovendick.

He is survived by his son, Robert (Ginger) Hovendick of Gretna, NE; grandchildren, Bree and Fletcher of Gretna; brother, Jack (Linda) Hovendick of Tekamah; nephews, Jay (Tami) Hovendick of Herman, NE, Kevin (Jill) Hovendick of Blair, NE, Kim (Kimberly) Hovendick of Milford, NE; many more grandnieces and grandnephews.

Philip W. McVeigh, 81, of Tekamah NE


Philip W. McVeigh, 81 years, of Tekamah, Nebraska passed away Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Community in Blair, NE.

Visitation will be held on Sun., Feb. 21st from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at Pelan Funeral Services in Tekamah. Family will also be receiving friends during this time. Visitation will also be held at the church one hour prior to service.

The Funeral Service will be held Mon., Feb. 22nd at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Tekamah.

Burial, with military honors, is in the Tekamah Cemetery.

Memorials suggested to the family for designation at a later time.

Ruby Ruth Hayes, 97, of Tekamah NE


Ruby Ruth Hayes was born to Lew and Stella (Mayberry) Tranmer April 30, 1918 in Decatur, Nebraska. She entered into eternal rest on June 6, 2015 at the Golden Living Center in Tekamah, Nebraska, where she had made her home for the last 5 years.

She graduated from Riverside High School in 1935. She then attended Dana College where she earned her teaching certificate.

She married Maurice Hayes October 3, 1938 in Logan, Iowa. They farmed in the Silver Creek and Bertha areas before retiring to Tekamah.

Ruby loved to cook, sew, and garden. She was also an avid reader, and would read multiple books at a time.

She was a past member of the Riverside Baptist Church and a current member of the First Baptist Church in Tekamah.

Ruby was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice Hayes; infant daughter; son, Rodney Hayes; sons-in-law, Harvey Barger and Ron Havelka; 3 brothers; two sisters.

Survivors include her daughters, Carol Barger of Tekamah, and Beth Havelka of Malmo, NE; grandchildren, Karolyn (Larry) McElroy of Lyons, NE, Robin (Steve) Cass, Lynn (Duane) Magill, Tami Miller all of Tekamah, Cassie (Kyle) Thelen of Lincoln, NE; step grandchildren, Mike Barger of Oakland, NE, and Leann (Mike) Hoeper of Tekamah; great grandchildren, Josh (Maggie) McElroy of Blair, NE, Darl (Sarah) Beck of Tekamah, Jarrod (Brandy) McElroy of Lyons, Amanda (Jake) Aronson of Tekamah, Sammy Miller of Tekamah, Emmi Thelen of Lincoln; step great grandchildren, Sachia Barger, Brittany Hoeper, Ryan Hoeper; 5 great great grandchildren; 2 step great great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

MEMORIAL SERVICE: Wednesday, June 10, 2015, 10:30 am at the First Baptist Church in Tekamah.

MEMORIAL VISITATION: Tuesday 6-8 pm with family receiving friends at Pelan Funeral Services Tekamah.

BURIAL: Hillcrest Cemetery, Decatur, Nebraska

PATRICIA PICKELL, 39 years, of Tekamah, Nebraska, passed away Sunday, March 1, 2015, at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska.
