Amazing Individuals!

Today I decided to take a break from my usual process of reporting on a topic related to the State Board of Education’s agenda and to write about an area important to me, for a totally different set of reasons. October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month, so it seemed timely to focus on the topic of individuals with disabilities. I must preface this article by sharing with you that I was once a special education teacher and administrator, and I have a passion for all students, including students with disabilities. It is important to bring public awareness to all types of syndromes, disabilities and health issues, but sometimes we focus on the syndrome or issue and we overlook the individual, this article is dedicated to some amazing individuals.

Federal and state laws have created an opportunity for all students with disabilities to receive a free, appropriate and individualized education. Nebraska Department of Education (NDE) sets the rules and provides a variety of supports and services to children with disabilities from birth through age 21. Other NDE services include Nebraska Vocational Rehabilitation, which helps adults and older students with disabilities prepare for employment, and Disability Determinations Service, which determines if an individual with a disability qualifies for Social Security disability benefits.

I first want to give a shout out for the community in which I live. The Oakland Independent newspaper recently ran a wonderful article about the crowning of the 2013 homecoming king. The Oakland-Craig student body voted for Kyle Johnson, their friend and their classmate who happens to have been born with Down Syndrome to serve as their homecoming king. This community support goes a step deeper, with  Jagger Benne, also born with Down Syndrome, serving as a crown bearer.

Next, I would like to share with you the story of a young lady I am honored to call a friend.  Brandis was also born with a syndrome, Vaters Syndrome. This syndrome is not as well known or recognized as many syndromes, but it has created a host of life-long medical challenges for Brandis, challenges that include more than 80 surgeries beginning with heart surgery when she was just days old. I am not writing about the health issues, but about the young lady who still has contact with high school classmates and teachers. She is an amazing nanny and babysitter, providing excellent care for other’s children. She can clean and organize better than anyone I know and is the best baker of banana bread ever!!

I would like to pay tribute to the parents, teachers, classmates, friends, extended family and communities that focus on the individual, not the syndrome. Thinking of Kyle, Jagger and Brandis reminds me, and I hope informs all of you, about the importance of focusing on the individual and the remarkable young people in our world today.

Social Speaks: Bullying

After the most recent suicide of a young teen in Florida due to bullying via Facebook, many are taking a harder look at bullying. What are your thoughts on bullying? With social media being used by the younger generation today, as well as everyone else, what should be done to prevent bullying on Facebook, or any other means, starting now?

Editorial Opinion

Let us never forget, we are only human. Judging others when not walking in their shoes is the same as gossiping. Those that judge and speak out of turn, no more wear a halo than those they are speaking so poorly of. We are the makers of our own destruction and success. Caring people will opt for success, hoping to leave a better world for their loved ones. Where do you stand?

I had the pleasure of visiting with Willmer and Millie Moseman of Oakland today in a local establishment.

I have adored them for many years. I rented a house from them approximately 28 years ago for Justin and I to live in. The house was on north Oakland Avenue, where Willmer and Millie live now. Not the same house though. After Justin and I moved out, they tore that house down and built a new house that they have lived in ever since.

The house I lived in was very nice, just older. We loved it. It was also in an ideal location. Being on Main Street has its’ advantages, as it does now. I seem to like living on Main Street.

I remember how I came to know Willmer and Millie. My Grandma Sundquist knew them and had suggested I rent the house from them.

I didn’t know then that they would become good friends of mine for years to come. I am very honored to know them. They are very kind and caring people. Oakland is blessed to have such good individuals in the community!

Speaking of Grandma Sundquist, I was out on one of my many walks I enjoy during the warm summer days, when I walked by Grandma’s former residence. Now, Michael Nissen lives there. He is taking great care of the house.

He has painted it, and is having what I believe to be a garage, built on the property. Grandma’s other garage was very small, but so was her car!

I am glad to see the property and house are so well maintained. Every summer, I, along with all of the other grandchildren, looked forward to a week at grandma’s house.

We couldn’t all be there at the same time, of course, but every moment there was precious.

I didn’t even mind being sick because grandma would take me to her house so the other three kids wouldn’t get sick.

I felt like I was on a holiday!

I would like to close my column with a few subjects that concern me. Bullying and any forms of abuse, sexual, verbal or physical.

The fact that innocent children are committing suicide due to bullying appalls me. With technology being what it is, where are the parents? Please monitor your children’s computers. Maybe it would be better for children not to have smart phones?

I think there should be a law stating only people of legal age can have any smart phone. I know that would be impossible to enforce. Maybe the parents should be punished too.

The forms of abuse I referred to are also getting out of hand. I have someone researching this, and I will be too. Hopefully, and article will be forthcoming.

In the mean time, please, keep your children safe.

Parents, be parents. The responsibility lies with you, but not you along. All adults are responsible.

It takes a village. Don’t forget that.

Thought for the Day: It is cold outside! Bundle up and keep warm!

Have a blessed time until we meet again.

Editorial: Sportsmanship

Full Definition of SPORTSMANSHIP as defined in the Webster Dictionary

Conduct (as fairness, respect for one’s opponent, and graciousness in winning or losing) becoming to one participating in a sport.

The owners and editor of this publication wish to remind those participating in sporting events of the definition of sportsmanship, as seen above.

It is our stance that this also applies to life in general. Participation in sports, or other activities, is a life-learning tool. To learn how to lose gracefully and congratulate the winners is an admirable quality, which will also assist when those individuals are on their own, dealing with the day-to-day challenges life has to offer.

As adults, and role models of the future leaders of this country, responsibility lies with you. People learn by example. If they are witness to a bad example, negative consequences will result.

Demonstrating a good example is of the upmost importance.

Children learn what they live, and if allowed to mistreat people, this will continue throughout their lives.

“It takes a village to raise a child,” is a quote used by many, such as Hillary Rodham Clinton.

A village failing is not acceptable.

Social Speaks: Government Shutdown

The government shutdown is beginning to have an impact on many, but who would expect it would affect those serving in the military? At this time, if a soldier dies while serving their country, the death benefits normally paid to the family to help with expenses are put on hold during the shutdown. What do you think of this?

Helpful Hints

I have found some more helpful hints. Please feel free to post your helpful hints. There are many of them and I am sure everyone has their own hints. Many household items are useful!

SUPER GLUE REMOVER
Use acetone nail polish remover on a cotton ball and let it saturate the super glue to remove it.

REVIVE OLD MARKER PENS
Acetone nail polish remover will revive an old marker pen when it gets dried up. Just dip the tip part in the acetone. Recap. Can use it again to write, draw, or color with in a couple hours.

MAKE YOUR OWN ADHESIVES
Mix 3 pkgs. unflavored gelatin with 1 Tbsp. cold water and 3 Tbsp. boiling water. Stir until dissolved. Add 1/2 tsp. peppermint oil. Store it in a small covered tub. It will congeal so to use it, microwave for 10 seconds on high.Unknown

I am sitting at my office, wondering if the government is going to shut down in the next 10 hours.

I am not an expert on how a government works and what the effect of it shutting down will have, but I do know this is not good.

I am very disappointed in our elected leaders. I am to the point that whomever I voted for will not get my vote again. I am so ashamed of all of them. They seem to be willing to sacrifice people, this country, because they have an agenda.

October 17 is also a critical day. If things don’t change, we won’t be able to borrow money after that day.

I don’t believe anyone in the congress, senate, or the president, should receive a paycheck since they are going to be hurting others. They don’t deserve to be paid for doing a lousy job.

I hope the next president can fix this mess. I hope we also have many new congressmen and senators next election.

I had the flu, combination cold, last week. I couldn’t sleep at night and was tired all day.

What a miserable week. Now I am fighting allergies. That is normal for me though. I don’t like having a cold.

I didn’t lose my appetite though. I ate soup and drank lots of water and juice. I ate plenty of fruit too.

I am just glad that is over. I hear there is a lot going around. Please be cautious, wash you hands often and get the flu shot!

There is a nice place in Oakland that I have enjoyed many times over the years. It is the Troll Stroll on the east end of town.

When my kids and my sister, Angie’s kids were little, we use to take them through it quite often.

Lawrence Faudel was quite a gifted artist. He painted many of the trolls over the years. Unfortunately, there are always those who have to do harm to something beautiful. The park was vandalized many times over the years, causing damage to the trolls.

Things are improving now, thanks to the city of Oakland employees and past Oakland seniors who would do community service one day towards the end of the school year all over Oakland and Craig, including the Troll Stroll. Many dead trees were cut down and taken out of the park. New bridges have been replaced old ones. Other new items have been placed in the park too.

My husband proposed to me on one of the bridges nearly 18 years ago. It has since been replaced, but is in the same location.

It is a nice place to walk through and visit. It is very beautiful!

Thought for the Day: Fall is here. Let’s enjoy the changing colors of the season!

Have a great week, until we meet again!
