Cougar Basketball Wrap-Up

Four years ago a new coach took over at Northeast. He inherited at team that had graduated seven seniors. There were only two players with extended varsity playing time. It was a definite rebuilding job and meant using four freshmen. The team struggled and finished with a 6-17 record.

The next season the four sophomores were joined by two more classmates and helped propel the Cougars to an 11-12 record.

The last two season the team has been a .500 team in spite of playing in one of the toughest conferences in Nebraska. The EHC Elkhorn Division has had a State Champion team in 2013 and 2014. The team did not have the physical attributes, mainly height, but made up for that with true grit. They had a 12-12 record in 2013 and finished this season with an 11-11 mark.

“We had a chance to post the first winning record since 2004,” said Coach Derek Lahm. “In the last two games we were just not ourselves. It should not take away from our season and the great effort the team gave each game.”

The seniors have put their mark on the Cougar Top Ten List. Alex Brehmer eclipsed All-Stater Bret Kroger’s records in games played and steals. He is second to Kroger in career assists with 216. His 78 assists in 2014 is tied for fourth. His 50 steals in ninth best for a season.

Dakota Riecken, an undersized post player, did not let size deter him. His 62.4% shooting is second to 6′ 7″ Brett Sailors’s 67%. For his career he converted 57.9%, again second to Sailors. His 78 and 173 free throws is fourth best for season and fifth best for career at NHS. He is tied for third in career offensive rebounds (173) and ninth in total rebounds (395).

Bobby Simpson put his name on the list as a three point shooter. He had 42 which places him in sixth place. His career total of 101 is fourth best. He is eighth in free throw percentage for a season at 78.1%.

Junior Chevy Henneman broke into the top ten with 35 three pointers this season. He is tied with Derek Haskell.

The class of 2014 has three 500 career point players. Dakota Riecken finished with 571 points. Bobby Simpson score 519 points and Alex Brehmer had 510.

Taylor Fuston had career marks of 43 points, 42 rebound and 19 steals to go with 16 assists. He was on varsity for three seasons.

David Bishop scored 77 points and grabbed 77 rebounds in this three seasons. He also had 26 steals and 12 assists.

The 2014th season saw the Cougars finish in a tie for fourth in the Elkhorn Division with a 3-4 record. The co-champions Bancroft-Rosalie won State and Dodge-Howells took third in Lincoln.

Despite their .500record the Cougars won all the statistical categories exception rebounding. Their tough man-to-man defense held opponents to 49.2 point per contest and forced 356 turnovers. They had 213 steals. The opposition had a 35 rebound advantage in rebound.

Northeast will have four returning players with experience on the varsity level. Chevy Henneman will be the top returning scorer with an 8.7 average. Sophomore Marcus Hegy averaged 7.2 ppg and was third best in rebounding with 92. Sophomore Alec Anderson was a valuable reserve with a 1.6 ppg average. His season was cut short by a hand injury.

Freshman Montana Riecken gained varsity experience in 2014. He will have the tough job of replacing Alex Brehmer at point guard next year.

Dakota Riecken earned 3rd team All-East Husker Conference honors in boy’s basketball this season. He was a major part of the Cougar team which finished with an 11-11 record and tied for 4th in the Elkhorn Division of the EHC.

“It is a really significant accomplishment as there were only 18 kids who made these teams out of a total of 16 teams (12 of them were Class C schools,.” pointed out Head Boys’ Basketball Coach Derek Lahm.

Dakota Riecken earned honors on the 3rd Team All-East East Husker Conference team for the 2013-2014 season after leading the Lyons-Decatur Cougars in scoring at 12.8 points per game and 6.0 rebounds per game. He finished the season 13th in the entire state (Classes A through D2) in field goal (FG%) percentage at 61%.

Head coach Lahm said of Dakota: “Dakota is well-deserving of this award as he was very coachable and one of the hardest workers in the school. He spent a lot of time improving his jump shot with the assistance of Coach Steve Hosch, and it really paid off this year as he was able to get his shot off against much taller players.” Lahm also added “We will really miss Dakota and our entire senior class of boys. They were a tight knit group of guys who set the tone for our younger kids. Their example should really inspire and drive our younger kids in the weight room and in the upcoming off-season workouts.”

Dakota is the son of Bill and Lori Riecken.

Bluejays Handle Cougars

By Clare Wiltse

Sports Contributor

The Cougar’s old nemesis got the best of them in the opening round of the D-3  Sub-districts  held at Pender on February 25.  The Walthill Blujays used a zone defense to shut down the Maroon as they defeated Northeast 56-46.

“We’ve had trouble with zone defenses all season,” said Coach Lahm.  “If we just had a little more size inside it could make a big difference on how we could be able to attack.”

Riecken got the team off to a great start by scoring the first 3 points of the game.  He opened with a free-throw and added a field goal on the team’s fourth possession to make it 3-0 for the Cougars.

The Blujays were stymied by three straight turnovers.  They finally scored with a lob to Sheldon Sheridan.  Once they scored Walthill was able to set up a full court press and the Cougars were rattled into nine first quarter turnovers.  Walthill continued to  attack the paint as Sheridan scored ten of his team-high 14 points in the first quarter.   Northeast only got off three more shots in the period and trailed  11-3.

In the second period the Blujays continued scoring as they completed a 22-0 run to take a 22-3 lead.  Northeast finally broke out the offense after Chevy Henneman scored with 3:28 to play in he half.  They closed out the half by out scoring Walthill 11-7.  Dakota Riecken got two goals and two free throws and Henneman closed out the half with a trey.  Walthill led 29-14.

The Cougars chopped into the fifteen point deficit several times in the third period.  They opened with a deuce by Riecken and trey by Simpson to pull within ten points.

Turnovers continued to hurt the Northeast cause as Walthill got eight points off of errant  Cougar passes.  Northeast found themselves down 37-23.  A three-pointer by Simpson made it an eleven point game.  Riecken scored twice to match the Blujays,  but they pulled away with two late scores to have a 46-30 advantage after three quarters.

Walthill went one for five at the start of the fourth quarter.  Northeast made a move as Simpson, Henneman and Bishop scored to make it a 48-36 game.  A trey by Simpson and basket by Hegy cut the lead to nine with three minutes to play.   Walthill scored on their next two trips down the court.  Hegy drew a shooting foul with 1:25 to play. His free shots made it 54-43.  The Cougars still had hope after Walthill missed on the front end of two one-and-ones, but all they could add is a basket by Bobby Simpson and one free throw by Dakota Riecken.

Dakota Riecken led the Cougars with 16 points and 10 rebounds.  This was his sixth double-double of the season. , Bobby Simpson had 13 points.   The Cougars finished the season with an 11-11 record.  Walthill went 11-9.

Through the years Cougar fans have come to recognize that Emerson-Hubbard seems to have a home court advantage when the two teams meet for the season’s final game. Coach Lahm expressed a concern about this road game and it proved to be true as Emerson-Hubbard took the contest by a score of 66-52.

If there ever is a snake pit for the Cougar boys to play basketball at, it has to be Emerson-Hubbard.  For the last two decades the Northeast boy have had trouble winning on the E-H court.  There have been buzzer beater shots, missed free throws, and over time games.  Northeast went ten years without a win in the Pirate gym before the Cougars claimed one in 2012.  That game was decided  by free shot as 51 fouls were called and 71 tries shot.  On 13 double bonus situations only one Cougar made both shots.

“That was really a bizarre game in 2012,” said Lahm.  “There were hot and cold streaks for both teams and in the fourth quarter nobody could make a pressure free throw.  It was really one of the weirdest games I have ever coached in.”

Coming into the game the (11-10) Cougars should have been a heavy favorite over the (6-15) Pirates.  Northeast scored on four of five possessions and took an 8-4 led.  All their points came from the paint as Riecken scored twice and Brehmer and Simpson each put in a runner.

Things changed after the Pirates went to a zone defense.  They out scored the Cougars 12 to 3 as they closed out the period with six straight points after a trifecta by Bobby Simpson had given Northeast an 11-10 lead.

Lyons-Decatur spent the next two quarters struggling to penetrated the Pirate’s defense.
They had five passes intercepted in the second period.  At the half, Northeast trailed by  score of 29-20.  In the third period the Cougars cut the lead to five with an 8-4 run.  After Alex Brehmer’s second basket of the period, the Pirate lead stood at 35-30 with 3:20 left in the period.   E-H heated up and scored on their final four shots and took a 44-30 lead.

The Pirates’ fourteen point margin stood up in the fourth period as the teams traded points.  Chevy Henneman got the hot hand and scored 11 of his team-high 16 points for the Cougars.

It was a tough shooting night for the Cougars who made only 22 of 48 shots and went 2 of 9 from the line.  This was compounded by the Pirates 34 to 20 advantage on the boards.  E-H made 28 of 49 from the field.

The Cougar head into a sub-district game against Walthill on February 25.  The (10-8) Blujays had beaten Emerson-Hubbard 74-51 the previous week.
