Lady Cougars Have Up and Down Weekend

It was a weekend of lows and highs as the Lady Cougars were broadsided by the defending C-2 State Champions, Pender, on Friday, but put in their best game of the season on Saturday as they defeated another C-2 team in Wakefield.

The (13-1) Pendragons coasted a 63-20 win as 10 players put in points for C-2’s power points leader.  (8-6) Wakefield had to play catch up after the Cougars took an eight point lead at half .  The Trojans came up short 49-47.

Pender had a 14 point lead after one quarter and by  half the Cougars faced a 28 point deficit.  The offense never got going as the teams scored a season-low 20 points. Vanessa Peterson was a team leader with 8 points and 8 rebounds.

Back on the home court the Cougars played some their best ball on both ends of the court to take a well earned win.  Three players scored in double figures and the team had a decisive advantage in rebounds and steals as Northeast picked up its fourth win of the season .

on Saturday

“Mead was a nice win for us,” said Coach Cronin. “But this was a huge win for us.  We are learning how to win.  The lead slipped away from us ,but we regrouped, came back, and rebuilt out lead.:”

Sophomore Brianne Haskell had her hands full on defense as she guarded Wakefield’s Lauren Lehmkuhl who is averaging over 20 points a game.  Lehmkuhl got 25 points, 15 coming in the fourth quarter rally by the Trojans.  Haskell sank six free throws in a row in the fourth quarter to help keep an eight point lead.  She finished with 13 points.

Coach  Cronin gave a tip of the hat top Haskell.   “Brianne did an outstanding job of defending tonight against  a senior who is one of the best girl players in the state.  She put a lot of effort into that and stilled scored in double figures.”

After the first period ended in tie, Darcey Simonsen put the Cougars on top as she started the quarter with as basket.  The Cougars gained as much a ten point advantage as Simonsen scored 8 of her team-high 17 points.  Northeast lead 22-14 at the half.

Lady Cougars Lose in Overtime

By Clare Wiltse

Sports Contributor

“We played eight and a half quarters of hard all out basketball this weekend” was how Coach Cronin evaluated his girls play this past weekend.  The Lady Cougars came away with a heart breaking overtime loss to Tekamah-Herman and a well earned road win at Mead.

Northeast got the jump on (7-5) Tekamah-Herman as they opened with a 9-0 run.  With Vanessa Peterson leading the way with two baskets the Cougars had a comfortable lead until the Tiger offense kicked in.  T-H scored the next ten points and took a 10-9 lead into the second quarter.

The Tigers would score six from the line and six from the field as they took a 22-15 lead at half time.  The Cougars struggled through the quarter with 3 for 13 shooting and missed all three of the free shots.

After being out scored by two in the third quarter, the Cougars were down by 13 early in the fourth quarter when  T-H knocked down their first two shots of the period.  With T-H leading 34-21 Haley Bacon got the ball rolling with a trey with 6:20 to play.  With two minutes to play the score stood at 34-30 after Bacon added two free throws and Darcey Simonsen and Vanessa Peterson made baskets.

With  Tekamah Herman missing their last nine shots of the quarter, the Cougars were poised to take the game.  Haley Bacon got the lead down to two, 34-32, on a score with 1:29 to play.  Brianne Haskell knotted the game up with a drive of the lane at the 52 second mark.

Both teams failed to score in the fading seconds of the game.  The Cougars had the best shot a win when Darcey  Simonsen  was fouled hard while driving the lane.  Simonsen had to leave the game as she came  up gimpy.  Coach Cronin inserted Haley Bacon to take her free shots on a one and one situation.  Bacon’s first shot rimmed off and T-H rebounded.

In over time the Cougars put up six shots , but none of them found the mark.  The Tigers got a free shot early in the overtime and later added a basket for as three point lead.  The game was not decided until Hannah Tobin’s free shot made it a two possession game with 7 seconds to play.

Haley Bacon was the Max Prep player of the game.  She scored 11 points while dishing 3 assists and grabbing 5 rebounds.

The Saturday night game at Mead took some of the sour taste from the teams’ mouth as defeat the (5-5) Mead Raiders.  A solid team effort game them a 41-38 victory.

The Cougars shot 42% on two points shots to overcome a 7 for 17 night at the free throw line.  They had two three pointers.

Senior Vanessa Peterson took player of the game honors with double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds.  Brianne Haskell led the team with 16 points.

Coach Cronin was elated to claim a 2-1 mark against D-2 schools.  “When we play against schools our size we are very competitive.  It’s tough to go against larger school with a bigger player pool.  I wouldn’t trade these girls, though.  They are a pleasure to work with and are giving it their all.”

For the year the girls have a 3-8 record.  They are 0-5 against EHC opponents.

The Cougars boys had an easy warm-up for 2014 with a 62-26 drubbing of winless Allen on January 3.  The Eagles fall to 0-8 while the Cougars stand at 3-4.

The coach took little pleasure in the easy win as the heart of the season starts in January.

“The next six games will be key for our season,” said Coach Lahm.  We could be 9-4 or we could be 3-13.  They are all winnable, but we have to play our best.  They are all going to be well contested.”

The opponents for the Cougars in the next three weeks are (3-6) Tekamah-Herman, (6-2) Mead, (4-5) Wakefield, (6-3) Cedar Bluffs, and (4-6) Humphrey Lindsay/Holy Family.

The Cougars never trailed against Allen.  Five different Players put in points as Northeast opened a 15-4 first quarter lead.  Bobby Simpson led the way with two treys.

By half time the lead grew to 39-10.  In the second half Coach Lahm turned the game   over to the underclassmen.  They outscored Allen 23-16.  “It was nice to give them a chance to play.  We are hoping that some of the other players will be inspired to work for a varsity uniform.”

Northeast connected on 24 of 43 shots while holding Allen to 8 of  26 shooting.  Dakota Riecken, Bobby Simpson and Chevy Henneman scored in double figures.  LDNE  had a 28-11 advantage in rebounding with David Bishop leading the way with 8.

Northeast hosts Tekamah-Herman next Friday.  On Saturday,  they travel to Mead for a 2:00 PM contest.

New School Record Set by Lady Cougar Lexie Bacon

By Clare Wiltse

Sports Contributor

The Lady Cougars started the 2014 year with a loss to (4-5) 58-45.  They head into a busy January with contests against seven teams with winning records.  Included in the schedule are two C-2 power houses (8-1) Pender and (10-0) Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family.

The Cougars got off to a great start as they got points from five players in the first period.

Darcey Simonsen, Brianne Haskell, Abby Peterson, and Kelly Wakeley all scored goals.  With Vanessa Peterson free shot they tied the Eagles at eleven.

The wheels slowed in the second period.  Allen stepped up the pressure with their zone defense.  After an early score by Haley Bacon the team went to the four minute mark before Brianne Haskell added a free throw.  Allen had gained a three point advantage.  Another Haskell basket brought it back to 17-16.  Allen had a 12 to 3 run  to close out the half.

Allen moved out to a 33 to 19 lead in the third period as they scored the first six points of the half. The Bacons scored all the points for the Cougars as  freshman Lexie scored five points and senior Haley closed scoring with a basket.  Northeast trailed 39-26.

Allen rattled off seven straight points to start the fourth period as they build a twenty point lead.  The Cougars turned to the long ball to try and reel in the high flying Eagles.

.Northeast  made four three pointers in the last two minutes to cut a twenty two point deficit down to the final score of 58-45.  Lexie Bacon hit on five of eight attempts from behind the arc in the fourth period.  Classmate Kelly Wakeley closed the scoring with a three pointer.

Lexie Bacon had a game-high 20 points to lead the Cougars.  She had six three pointers along with a deuce.  Her six threes is a new school record.  It erased the mark of five set by Brandi Bovee in 1998 against Dodge and matched by Ashley Bacon against Logan View in 2010.

Northeast will take on  (5-4)Tekamah-Herman and (5-2) Mead this weekend.
