Montana Riecken had a 162 yard rushing night for the Cougars. He scored 2 touchdowns. For the season he has 1344 yards and 25 touchdowns. He completed 2 of 6 for 26 yards passes with 1 interception. Benny Estrada broke a sixty yard scoring run as he led the Cougars with 143 yards.

Lady Cougars Down Pender, Improve Record to 15-15

By Clare Wiltse, Sports Contributor

The Lady Cougars got an EHC win over Pender last week.  It was a big win because it raised their record to 15-15.  After starting out with a 2-9 record the Cougars have come on strong with thirteen wins their last nineteen matches.

Going into their final regular season match Tekamah-Herman Coach Hathaway stated,  “It is a good feeling going into a game against T-H with a .500 record. We are looking to advance that to a winning record as we head into subs.”

Hathaway commented about the sub-districts that,  ” (14-15)  Bergan is whom we will most likely be playing against 1st round. They are going to be a solid team with a heavy outside hitter. We are probably pretty evenly matched so it will be a good game either way.”

The sub-district matches will be held next week at Oakland-Craig.  Cedar Bluffs, Fremont Bergan, Omaha Christian Academy, Omaha Nation, and LDNE are schools that will be competing.

Northeast defeated the Pendragons in three sets.  Outside hitters Brianne Haskell and Kelly Wakeley had a big night with 12 and 10 kills respectively.  The team tallied 30 kills while hitting 0.195

“The guys really did a good job of coming out and taking care of business. We did a good job of staying focused and not playing sloppy,” stated OC Head Coach Joe Anderson. “I was very proud of our younger kids. They got to play more than two quarters and I thought they played very physical and really showed a lot of improvement.”

Tomorrow night, Oakland-Craig takes on Wisner-Pilger in Oakland. Be sure to cheer on the Knights to victory. Also, the members of the 1995 Oakland-Craig football team will be recognized at half-time!

Lady Cougars Earn Ninth Place in EHC Tournament

By Clare Wiltse, Sports Contributor

The Lady Cougars went on a roll at the EHC Conference Volleyball Tournament.  After losing the first match against West Point-Beemer Northeast went into the loser’s bracket.  In these consolation games LDNE picked up three straight wins and claim ninth place in the tournament.

The Cougars did all this without starting outside hitter Brianne Haskell.  Brianne was attending the Global World Food Prize Youth Institute in Des Moines.

“Our team is so amazing to work with,” said Coach Angela Hathaway. “The remaining 9 girls that we had for the Conference Tournament pulled together, adjusted, and did all that I asked of them. We had to move a few girls around and play a freshmen that didn’t have much experience, but the girls all play well together and that translated throughout the games. “

After dropping their match to the Cadets in straight sets Northeast came back with a 25-14, 25-13 conquest of Madison.  They were spurred on by Madie Ronnfeldt who hit 0.545 with 7 kills..  The team hit 0.316 for the match.

Kelly Wakeley gave the team a boost with 11 kills when they defeated Clarkson/Leigh in the consolation semi-finals on Saturday morning.  LDNE put up winning scores of 25-20 and 25-16.  Abby Peterson transitioned from her libero position to play in the front row.

The coach commented, “Kelly is a solid player for us. She stepped up her game with her hitting and her defense. Abby transitioned over to a right side to play in all six rotations. It was fun to watch the girls in some different roles.”

In he finals, the Cougars struggled on the attack against Bancroft-Rosalie as they hit only 0.071 and had 13 hitting errors.  Madie Ronnfeldt had another  outstanding game with 5 kills and 11 digs

“Madie stepped up her game for both games. Her defense and offense were on point. We did have some hitting errors but our defense backed us up.,” said the Coach.

Earlier in the week the Cougar had a home match against North Bend Central..  The C-1 rated Tigers overpowered Northeast in three straight  games, 25 too 10, 21, and 18.  The Cougars attack was led by Kelly Wakeley with 7 kills and Tessie Collins with 5.

Cougars Beat Winside, Raise Record to 4-2

By Clare Wiltse, Sports Contributor

Northeast’s Cougars raised their record to 4-2 with a 72-22 win over (1-5) Winside.  They are undefeated in district action with two games to play.  They will test their 3-0 district record against Emerson-Hubbard who is 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the district this week.

After a hard fought first quarter, the game became a rout in the second period.  Montana Riecken’s 1 yard run was the only score of the quarter, but Riecken’s interception on the last play of the period set up LDNE for a 15 yard scoring run by Marcus Hegy as the second quarter started.

Coach Maresh turned to his bag of tricks and pulled off an onside kick on the ensuing kickoff. After the successful attempt Northeast marched for a score by Riecken.  Northeast caught the Wildcats off guard a second time with another onside kick and built a 26-0 lead when Hegy scored from three yards out.

Things got even worse for the visitors as they fumbled on their first play from scrimmage after the score.  Northeast got another score by Riecken to reach a 34-0 lead.  A 39 yard romp by Hegy and 5 yard dash by Benny Estrada put the running clock in effect for the second half.

The Cougars offense continued its explosive play as they gained 462 total yards.  According to MaxPreps, Northeast leads all eight man teams in Nebraska with 450.2 per game. They have an average of 352 yards rushing with 7.7 yards a carry.  They have 38 rushing and 6 passing TDs.

Montana Riecken was held to a season low of 85 yards rushing.  He scored three times to bring his total to 19.  The junior passes 7 times, completing 5 for 130 and a touchdown. For the year he has rushed for 1097 and passed for 588.

Riecken passed to Jon Christiansen four times for 100 yards.  Jon had a 35 yard TD reception in the third period.  Tyler Kroger made a 30 yard reception.

Marcus Hegy rushed for 141 yards and 3 TDs.  For the season he has gained 583 yards and scored 13 times.

Benny Estrada added 91 yards with three touchdowns and Jacob Whitaker rushed three times for 15 yards.

The defense was headed by Jon Christiansen who had 10 tackles 2 TFLs and an interception.  The Cougars limited the Wildcats to 156 yards rushing on 34 carries.  Winside gained 116 yards passing on 6 completions of 20 attempts.

Lady Cougars Make Clean Sweep with Two EHC Wins!

By Clare Wiltse, Sports Contributor

Lady Cougar volleyball made a clean sweep for the week with two EHC wins.   They had straight set wins over both (2-20) Logan View and ( 10-12) Bancroft-Rosalie.

LDNE will take an 11-13 record against (16-3) NBC in the last home match of the season on Tuesday.  Their number ten seed in the EHC tournament will put them up against (10-9) West Point-Beemer in the first round on Thursday in North Bend. A win over West Point-Beemer would probably mean a rematch against Tuesday’s foe, North Bend Central

The Cougars blew through Logan View with 25-6, 25-18, and 25-12 wins.   The team pounded out 30 kills with a .231 hitting average.   They had 8 ace serves.

Against Bancroft-Rosalie, found themselves trailing 7-2 in set one after the Lady Panthers came out with a flurry of kills and three ace blocks by Tess Nottleman.  After a time out the Cougars got a kill by Tessie Collins and after the side out Sophia Henneman served up a pair of aces to  narrow the gap to one point.   Northeast went onto to a 25-19 win.

“To be completely honest, our girls were overly excited to play B-R. We were hitting the ball right into the block and making some silly errors. So in the time out, we talked about playing our game and to stop making B-R’s middle look really good. We had to not just avoid the block but also use the block for our benefit,” said Coach Hathaway.  “The girls adjusted well and came out firing for the rest of the game!”

Northeast never trailed in the second game.  Lexie Bacon started off the set with an ace serve and finished off the Panthers with another.   Brianne Haskell had five of her game-high 14 kills and  Kelly Wakeley added three.

Ace serves book ended the  25-15 win  in game three. On the Cougars’ first service Brianne Haskell opened with an ace and Kelly Wakeley closed out the match with another.

Sophia Henneman led a Cougar serving attack that had 11 ace serves.  The sophomore had 5. The Coach commented, “Sophia is a very aggressive server. We have seen it all season, but during the B-R game she was able to eliminate some of the errors she has made in the past to keep the run going.”  Lexie Bacon and Madie Ronnfeldt added two aces each.

Brianne Haskell tied a season-high with 14 kills in the match.  Her kills at the end of the second set stopped a  B-R rally after they had closed to within  three points.  “Brianne has always been a consistent player,”  said Coach Hathaway.  “She was able to attack the ball aggressively throughout the entire game.  She showed great leadership on the court and is a player that we can always rely on. ”

The Coach reflected the EHC Tournament and said, “We are looking forward to our rematch against WP-B. We saw them first game out for the season and it was a close match up. It will be a great game. ”

Oakland-Craig Takes Down Stanton, no Game This Week

The Oakland-Craig Knights blew past Stanton last Friday night 33-14 in a thriller for the OC fans.

“This was a big win for our team. The guys really prepared well and came out ready to play.  We were able to jump on them early in the 1st quarter, which took them out of some of the things that they like to do.” stated OC Head Coach Joe Anderson. “I thought our line did a good job up front which allowed Hoss and Cole to have big nights on the ground.”

There won’t be a game this week, as Laurel-Concord forfeited this week’s game to the Knights.

“Unfortunately, we don’t get to get back out there and play this week. We will try to use this week to heal up some of our injuries and work a lot on some fundamental things that we are doing wrong,” Anderson said.

The Northeast Cougars raised their record to 3-2 with 72-6 win over  (2-3) Allen.  They are undefeated in district play with a 2-0 record.  Next up for the Maroon is (1-4) Winside in a home contest.

“We jumped on them early,” said Coach Maresh.  The Cougars scored on their first three possessions and a pick six by Montana Riecken gave them a 28-0 lead.  “It was his pure athletic ability to make a one-hand snag and return it for a TD; you cannot coach that into a player.” stated the Coach.

The junior quarterback continued to lead the offensive attack with 208 yards on the ground and passed for 106.  Riecken scored five touchdowns.

“It was a team effort.  With the big lead we got to sub a lot.  Seven players scored and everyone had a defensive tackle.”

The Cougars piled up 491 total yards.  They rushed for 374 and passed for 117. Northeast had 38 rushes for a 9.8 average.  They went 6 for 7 in passing.

Riecken carried  13 times for 208 yards.  Benny Estrada carried 10 times for 104 yards.  Marcus Hegy added 57 yards and Jacob Whitaker carried for 10 yards.

Riecken passes found Jayden Vetick twice for 36 yards and Jon Christiansen twice for 36 yards and a TD.  Tyler Kroger had a 38 yard reception.   Jacob Whitaker and Dustin Burgett teamed up for an 11 yard TD pass.

The Eagles were limited to 135 yards on the ground and 18 yards passing.  The Cougar defense held them to as meager 2.8 yards for carry and had five takeaways.  Allen completed only four of nine passes with two interceptions.

Maresh added that Marcus Hegy had a standout night.  The senior linebacker had a team-high 13 tackles, 3 being solos.  He caused and recovered a fumble.

Lady Cougars Improve on Record

By Clare Wiltse, Sports Contributor

It was a busy week for the Northeast  Lady Cougars.  LDNE had seven matches and were able to win four of them.  They have a record of 9-13

Tuesday they journeyed to Wisner for a double triangular competition which put them up against Howells-Dodge and Madison.  The Lady Jaguars are a top ten team in D-1 with a 12-5 record and the Cougars took them to a third game before falling, 2-1.  Northeast out hit Howells-Dodge 38 to 31 in kills and had 7 ace serves to three for H-D.  Brianne Haskell had a match high 14 kills.

Madison with a 2-14 record was a tune up game before they  took on Howells-Dodge.  Northeast swept them 2-0.  Both setters,  Lexie and Mickayla had 11 set assists.

Thursday took the girls to Boys Town  where they beat the hosts in straight sets, 25-7 and 25-12.  They had 13 ace serves against the (6-12) Cowgirls.  Lexie Bacon had 5.

The main event was the contest against (15-4) Cedar Bluffs.  The Wildcats were rated in the top ten in D-1 and lead the Cougars’ sub-district in power points.  After losing the first set, the Cougars came back with a 25-17 win and finished them off 25-22.

“It was a great match up for us. We have had a lot of close games that have not ended in our favor. Cedar Bluffs is a good team and it was a great win for our girls,” said Coach Hathaway.  “We have a possibility to meet up again with Cedar Bluffs. We know we have the capabilities to win that game and it will be a battle. “

Saturday was the Clarkson Tournament.  The Cougars started the brackets against Clarkson/Leigh.  The second match of the season the (7-10)  Patriots took the Cougars to a five set match.  This time the Cougars won easily taking 25-9 and 25-22 wins.

In the semi-finals Northeast took on David City Aquinas.  The (7-7) Monarchs lost four of their first five matches.  They are six and three since then with two losses to rated teams. LDNE took the first game 25-21, but lost 25-18 and 25-19 in the next two.  Both Brianne Haskell and Kelly Wakeley had 9 kills.

Northeast finished in fourth place after losing to Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family 2-0.  The (13-6) Bulldogs have beaten Northeast twice this season with their tall front line.

Northeast has a road match at (2-19) Logan View and will host (10-10) Bancroft-Rosalie this  week.

“B-R is a good team. We are excited to play B-R because we are a fairly evenly matched team. It will be a good match for sure and I believe that defense will be the key to winning that game,” said the Coach.

Next week they will have their last home match when (15-3) North Bend Central come to Lyons.  The Tigers are rated in C-1.  It will be another tough match for the girls.  Coach Hathaway commented,  “I think our schedule helps us out quite a bit. We don’t play “easy” teams by any means. Our schedule is challenging which is what our program need in order to move forward. ”

The EHC tournament starts October 15 with the Cougars being seeded tenth in the sixteen team league.
