Lady Cougars End Season Tying School Win Record

Northeast went into the sub-districts with a number two seed and a tough team to take out in round one.  Bancroft-Rosalie despite their 10-13 record were going to be a tough draw.  The game went into overtime with Northeast on top 51-48.

The Lady Cougars started the game in a rare attempt of zone defense  to combat the double post offense of the Panthers.  “We did a good job of stopping their offense with the zone,” said Coach Rex Haskell.  “We did not do a good job of rebounding though. The ball kept going to them as they had a 33 to 8 led at half time.  The second half we went back to man and out rebounded them by three rebounds.”

After a tie at 10 in the first period, the Panthers gained a 22-17 lead at half.
The third period was a defensive period with Northeast gaining back one point.  Northeast took the lead in the fourth quarter and looked to have game won before misfortune hit in the closing seconds.

“Our full court press got us back into the game and we had a three point lead with seconds to play. B-R was in a forced to foul situation, but the foul was not called,” stated Coach Haskell.  The Panthers got as steal and a three and the game went into over time.

“It was a game of free throws,” commented the coach.  We made ours in the overtime and they didn’t.  Lexie and Abby came through with some big shots.  We needed them because Brianne and Darcey had fouled out.”

During the game LDNE shot 39 free shots and made 23 for 59% accuracy.  The Panthers had 22 tries and converted just 9 for 41%.

The Cougar had three in double figures. Darcey Simonsen topped the team with 14 point,; Lexie Bacon had 12, and Brianne Haskell had 11. Vicki Gatzemeyer had a game-high 26 points for B-R.

Perennial basketball power Wynot took on the Cougars in the sub-districts finals.  The (18-5) Blue Devils have been the State D-2 Champions for the last four years after taking runner-up in 2010.

“They pressed us the whole game full court.   It  took us a while to adapt to it and we did get some easy points.  You had to attack their press because if you ever picked the ball up they would trap you,” stated Coach Haskell.

Wynot jumped to a 17-8 first quarter lead.  Northeast cut the lead to five in the second quarter, but scores in the late period gave the Blue Devils a double digit lead at half.  Wynot came out with an 8-0 to start the second half and it was now a twenty point game,  Northeast was not able to mount any comeback until Wynot subbed out.   LDNE lost 65-49.

The Lady Cougars end their season with a school record tying fifteen wins.  They  lost nine times.

Cougars Down Logan View in Overtime, End Losing Streak

By Clare Wiltse, Sports Contributor

The Northeast boys ended a five game losing streak with a 42-37 overtime win over Logan View in an EHC consolation bracket game.  They have a 7-10 record while Logan View falls to 3-16.

“It wasn’t pretty, but still was a win,” joked the coaches after the game.  Turnovers and missed free throws marred the offensive efforts by the team.  The defense adapted after the first period and held the Raiders to twenty-four points the rest of the game.

Dylan Hardeman got the Cougars off to a fast start with a trey and deuce as they moved to a 5-2 lead.  The Raiders’ zone trap defense limited Northeast to just one point while they rolled up eleven for a 13-6 first quarter lead. Eight turnovers limed the Northeast team to just four shots during the period.

“Their height advantage made it tough to run our offense,”  said Coach Lahm.  “Our guards are short and they could not see over the Logan View defenders.  We could not get the ball into the posts.”

The Cougars cut the deficit to just one point during the second quarter.  They got the ball into Alec Anderson, who made five of six free shots and added a goal, and Cole Christoffersen .  The Maroon turned the ball over just once.  The defense turned up the heat and LV made only two of eight shots.  A Raider basket at the buzzer gave them a three pint, 20-17 half time lead.

Logan View got the first four points of the second half.  Northeast turned to its backcourt to close in on the Raiders.  Chevy Henneman started the rally with a three pointer.  Dylan Hardeman  connected on a two pointer and followed with a shot from behind the arc.   Henneman second three of the period gave Northeast the lead with 3:50 left in the period.  The Raiders used a 6-2 run for 32-30 advantage at the quarter.

Alec Anderson tied the score in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter.  Logan View responded with three pointer.  Cole Christoffersen made it a one point game.  Northeast went back on top with an Anderson bucket with 4:40 to play.

The Cougars had chance to put the game away, but suffered six turnovers during the period.  Their free throw shooting was also suspect during crunch time.  Henneman  missed the front end of one-and-one and Christoffersen failed on a three-point play while going 0-4 during the period. Alec Anderson missed the first of two with 2:22 to play.  He made the second for a 37-35 lead.

“We have tried all sorts of  pressure free throw tactics in  practice,” stated Coach Lahm.  “They just are not converting over well to game time situations.  Luckily it did not hurt us tonight.”

The Cougar defense did rise to the occasion.  They kept the Raiders from scoring as they missed nine straight shots.  Logan View tried to pound the ball inside, but Christoffersen stood tall and denied them a good shot in the paint as he blocked a shot and got four defensive rebounds during the period.

Logan View managed to tie the score with 25 seconds left when Jacob Polk made a short jumper to send the game to overtime.

The overtime saw Northeast out score Logan View 5-0.  All the points came from the free throw line.  Montana Riecken gave the Cougars a 39-37 lead with two free shots.  Andersonadded one and Cole Christoffersen closed the scoring with a pair of makes.

The defense kept up their play as the Raiders went 0-6 from the field.  For the game Logan View made thirteen of forty-four shots.

Alec Anderson Led the Cougars with 14 points.  Dylan Hardeman  had 10n points before fouling out.  Cole Christoffersen had eight points and twelve rebounds and drew praise from the coach for stepping up his play.

The Cougars have home games against Wisner-Pilger and Logan View this week.

By Clare Wiltse, Sports Contributor

After the games Coach Lahm commented, “I have been extremely proud of the way our kids have responded to adversity in each and every game. The kids are still excited to be around each other, and they are working to get better every day. We must continue to learn and play the game the way it is meant to be played and part of that is learning how to maximize every possession on the offensive and defensive ends.”

Lady Cougars Down Lady Knights in First Round of East Husker Conference

By Clare Wiltse, Sports Contributor

There was a lot of whooping going on in the locker room after the Lady Cougars picked up a first round win in the East Husker Conference Tournament over Oakland-Craig.  It was a different story the previous night  when the Lady Knights claimed a sixteen point win in a regular season game.

The (9-11) Lady Knights won 51-35 on their home court.  On a neutral court at Howells the Lady Cougars raised their record to 12-6 with a 48-43 win.

“The girls really wanted this game,” said Coach Haskell.  “After the way we played last night, we were determined to do a better job.  We couldn’t make a shot on Thursday while O-C was hot.  We shot so much better tonight and our defense denied their jump shots tonight.”

On Thursday the Knight made seven of ten shots in the first quarter.  Brianne Haskell provided all the Cougar points during the period. Her three pointer gave Northeast their only lead at 5-4.  O-C got the jump on LDNE with a 13-2 run when they made five shots in a row and tacked on two free shots.

Mariah Jessen scored early in the second period, but it would be the only basket of the period for Northeast.  Northeast made only one of six shots in the quarter.  They made no trips to the free throw line.  Oakland-Craig took a 27-12 half time lead.

Northeast got off to a 8-2 start after half with a trey by Lexie Bacon followed by a deuce and trey from Brianne Haskell.  The Cougars were back to a single digit deficit, 29-20, but their shooting cooled as the managed only a single free shot in the remaining of the period. Seven shots and three tries drew iron as O-C moved to a 39-21 lead at the end of three periods.

Northeast managed to outscore O-C by two points in the final stanza.   Two threes by Haskell  and a pair of baskets by Jessen plus an bucket by Abby Peterson  made for 5 for 11 shooting.

Brianne Haskell had a game-high 18 points.  Oakland -Craig had three in double figures with Brynn Charling leading with 13 and Shannon Pille adding 11 and Emma Reinert 10.

Northeast had one bright spot on defense.  Mariah Jessen had 8  shot blocks.  This places her at number five on the Northeast Top Ten.

It was a different story the next night.  Darcey Simonsen was back in the lineup after a precautionary decision kept her out the night before.  Darcey cleared concussion tests and her defense and rebounding made a big difference in the final results.

Northeast bolted to a 7-0 lead with Peterson, Haskell, and Jessen scoring.  In the mean time, the defense forced the Knight to the parameter where they missed four shots and turned the ball over four times.  It took them five minutes to score on a free throw.

A bucket by Jessen followed by a trey by Wakeley got a 12-4 lead for Northeast.  A pair of baskets by Bures  made it 12-8 at the quarter.

The defense contested every shot by the Knights in the second period.  They made only two of ten shots.  Free throws kept them in the game with six makes out of ten tries.  Mariah Jessen was the target of their attack as she drew her third foul during the period.

Northeast extended the lead to five points at the half.  Simonsen scored twice.  Haskell made four free shots.  Peterson had the last three points of the half as LDNE went the lockers leading 23-18.

Northeast moved to a nine point lead after intermission, but O-C was going to make a game of it.  They closed on an 8-2 run to make it a three point game, 33-30.

Darcey Simonsen started the scoring in the fourth period, but the Knights came back with a lay-in by Bures and a trey by Pille with 4:46 left which tied the game at 35.

Brianne Haskell worked her magic in the lane and  put the Cougars back into the lead, but Oakland got a goal from Charling and free throw from Pille to take 38-37 lead with 3:06 to play. Darcey Simonsen was good for two from the stripe as Northeast regained the lead.

With 2:37 left Haskell made one of two free shots.  Twenty seconds later Pille popped in a deuce to tie the game, 40-40.  Haskell answered with dagger of a three pointer with 1:54 to play.  The Cougars would never trail after that.

The Cougars rebounded a missed free shot on  O-C’s next offensive possession and worked the clock down to under a minute before missing a shot.  Snader connected on a long two point shot ‘and the Knights hoped to cash in by  fouling.  Abby Peterson made two free tries for 45-42 score with 44 seconds to play.  Simonsen and Pille traded points before Lexie Bacon sealed the win  with two free shots with 3 seconds left.

It was a team win for the Cougars as they got three players in double figures and six players who scored.  Brianne Haskell led the way with 14while assisting 7 times.  Darcey Simonsen had 11 and Abby Peterson put in a career-best 10 points.

On the defensive side Brianne Haskell and Darcy Simonsen  combined to keep the Knights’ top scorer, Brynn Charling six point below her average on 3 for 13 shooting.  O-C made 15 of 45 shots while Northeast made 16 of 39.

The Cougars move on to face Howells-Dodge in a quarter final game at Stanton.  The Lady Jaguars took a one point win over Northeast in December.

By Clare Wiltse, Sports Contributor

Darcey Simonsen led the way with 5 steals as the team had a total of 12.  Top scorers were Lexie Bacon with 14 and Kelly Wakeley with 11.

The (16-1) Stanton team had too much speed for the Cougars to slow down.  “It seemed like they beat us to every loose ball and turned it into a lay-up,” said Coach Haskell.

“We played hard he whole game, but just could not cash in when we had the chances.  When we were down by fifteen, we missed three straight lay-ups that could have cut the lead to single digits.”

Brianne Haskell was the lone Cougars in double figures with 12 points.  The Fillies were led by Hilary Huss with 30.

Coach Haskell lamented poor shooting after the loss to Tekamah-Herman on Friday.  “If  some of our shots would have dropped in the first period this would have been a different game.  We had to play catch up the rest of the way.  One thing I admire about these girls is that that don’t give up.  They fought to the end.”

After trailing by twelve, 39-27,  the Cougars had a big fourth period and pulled to within five at the buzzer.

Brianne Haskell put in 20 points for the Cougars.  Lexie Bacon added 11. Darcey Simonsen also scored 11 before fouling out in the fourth quarter.

The Cougars suffered as tough loss in ther finals against Emerson-Hubbard.  The Pirates got the victory on a last second shot in overtime.  After regulation time ended with the score tied at 59,  Emerson-Hubbrd rode the momentum of their fourth quarter comeback to out score Alyons-Decatur 8 to 6 for 67-65 win.

“We controlled most of the game, but costly turnovers and missed free throws in regulation cost us. More significantly was our inability to get stops on the defensive end, but give Emerson-Hubbard credit for their offensive execution as well,” stated Coach Lahm.

Alec Anderson was the leading Cougar with 17 points. Montana Riecken had one his best offensive games with 14 points.  He had four three pointers.

Lahm priassd hias sophomore point guard.  “Montana Riecken has done an excellent job running the offense. He continues to get more aggressive offensively, and he sees the floor so well. He is one of the best defenders on the team. He is a special player, and with continued work this season and this off-season, he will be one of the top point guards in the conference the next couple years.”
