Shirley E. Wagner, age 94, of Uehling, Nebraska passed away Monday December 21, 2015 at the Hooper Care Center. Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Hooper, NE. The Rev. Joel Schroeder will officiate. Burial will follow in the Hooper Cemetery. Visitation with family present will be Friday, Jan. 1, 2016, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Ludvigsen’s Hooper Funeral Chapel, Hooper, NE. Memorials are suggested to Redeemer Lutheran Church. Shirley Elaine Stenvers was born on March 2, 1921 to Mauritz and Mathilda ‘Claasen’ Stenvers on their farm northwest of Uehling. She married Clarence Wagner on June 22, 1941. They lived on a farm on the Scribner-Herman road and raised three children there, Lynne, Dean and Carol. Her husband preceded her in death on October 29, 1975. After his death Shirley moved to Uehling in 1979, where she resided until her death. She was confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church north of Hooper on September 2, 1934. She enjoyed going to the Confirmation jubilees every year. She went to Wayne State College after she graduated from Uehling High School on May 20, 1938. She received her teaching certificate to teach in rural schools. When she married, she was a housewife until 1956 when she went back to teaching in rural schools in Dodge County. She attended Midland College night classes and summer classes and graduated in 1969 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education.
She also was involved in volunteer work at Redeemer Lutheran Church which included Sunday school teacher, Altar Guild and library committee. She also was involved in reading to residents at the Hooper Care Center, Blood Mobile in Uehling, Election Board for many years, active in the American Legion Auxiliary in which she held several positions, Dodge county Feeders Auxiliary President, Chairman of the Nebraska Cattle Women’s Association, Uehling Senior Citizen Center and entertainment committee and 4-H leader. Her hobbies included collecting Fiestaware, recipe book collection and trying new recipes, Antiques and refinishing old furniture. She also loved to read even up to a couple of days before her death.
Besides her husband, Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, sister Eileen Behrendsen and brother Dennis Stenvers.
Shirley is survived by her children: Lynne (Butch) Vaughn, Dean (Kay) Wagner, and Carol Christensen. She is survived by 6 grandchildren, Mary Jackson, Christopher (Alisa) Vaughn, Louis Vaughn, Natalie (Tracey) Kozak, Kara (Chaunce) King, and Casey Christensen. She is also survived by 10 great grandchildren.

Bernetta Katherine Von Seggern Schroeder, child of God, entered the Church Triumphant on Christmas Day 2015. Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the St. John’s Lutheran Church on the Cuming County Line. Burial will follow in the St. John Lutheran Cemetery. She was born on June 20, 1922 to Bernard and Bertha Von Seggern, on the family farm in Dodge County. Bernetta was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church on the Cuming County Line, Scribner, Nebraska. In September of 2015, Bernetta attended the 80thJubilee of her confirmation at St. John Lutheran Church, where she was a member at the time of her death. Bernetta graduated from Scribner High School in 1939 and attended Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska, where she earned a teaching certificate. Bernetta taught in rural Dodge County Schools for five years. On December 30, 1945, Bernetta was united in marriage to Norman E. Schroeder. Three daughters and two sons were born to them.
Norman and Bernetta’s first home was in Chicago where Norman attended Chicago Lutheran Theological Seminary, Maywood, Illinois. Bernetta found employment as a bookkeeper at a bank, a seamstress in an exclusive dress shop, and a typist for a seminary professor.
Pastor Norman and Bernetta served Gloria Dei Lutheran Church (Lodgepole, Nebraska) and Grace Lutheran Church (Chappell, Nebraska) from 1948 to 1962; and St. John Lutheran Church (Bennington, Nebraska) from 1962 to 1987. Bernetta was a life-long servant of Christ through a myriad of church ministries. She shared her faith by guiding and nurturing children, youth, adults, and the elderly. She opened the Word of God by leading Bible studies and teaching. She elevated faith formation through liturgical arts and care for the sacred details of corporate worship. She carried the light of Jesus to everyone she met. People who knew Bernetta might have seen and experienced her ministry gifts through her teaching of5th Grade Sunday School and 7th Grade Catechism; Bible camp, Women of the ELCA; Vacation Church School; Luther League; Altar Guild; visitation; church dinners and generous gifts of food; parade floats; senior ministries; music leadership; friendship; banners, altar hangings, and handmade stoles; quilts; and wedding coordination. Bernetta was humble and giving, and she served tirelessly in faithful devotion to Christ, giving God the glory for shared blessings.
Bernetta and Norman retired from active congregational ministry in November of 1987 and moved from Bennington to rural Washington County. Bernetta was a loving and gentle caregiver to Norman until his death in 1990. In 2001 Bernetta moved to Immanuel Village in Omaha, Nebraska, where she continued her quiet ministries through a bell choir, fellowship activities, book club, Bible studies, as well as in the Over-Sixty Center and Keenagers in Bennington.
In 2005, Bernetta received the President’s Call to Service Award. She served on the Bennington Planning Commission and was active in community life. Bernetta was a lifetime member of Midland Women. In 1997 Norman and Bernetta received the Midland Lutheran College Distinguished Family Award. Bernetta was a Girl Scout leader, a Cub Scout Den Mother, and a 4-H leader. Bernetta was honored by the Bennington Women’s Club as Woman of the Year in 1979.
Bernetta’s hobbies included crossword puzzles, sewing, quilting, cooking, gardening, leading sing-alongs, birding, learning to play the violin, and flying kites. Bernetta was a loving wife/mother/Oma to her family, delighting in sharing God’s Word, music, games, meals, and conversations with her entire family. Norman and Bernetta often used live potted trees in their home for Christmas. Most of the evergreen trees at the St. John parsonage and their acreage were Christmas trees planted to point to the Lord in whose Name they lived – and served – and loved. At the time of her death, Bernetta was living at the Hooper Care Center.
Bernetta was preceded in death by her parents, loving husband Norman, infant son Karl, brothers Melvin (Doris), Clinton (Mildred), Myron Von Seggern, and Helmut Martin. She is survived by four children Miriam (Ken) Sukraw of Bennington, Nebraska; Jannene (Lyle) Sass of Blair, Nebraska; the Rev. Joel (Nancy)Schroeder of Hooper, Nebraska; and Loretta (the Rev. David) Schafer of Waukon, Iowa; eight grandsons, Mark (Angela) Sukraw; Christopher, Philip, and Andrew (Corie) Sass; Benjamin, Jacob, and Seth (Kylie) Schroeder; and Paul Schafer; five great-grandchildren Katherine, Elijah, and Hanna Sukraw, and Jacob and Elliott Sass; three sisters-in-law Lois Von Seggern, Evelyn Briza, and Hanna Martin; many nieces and nephews, other relatives, and a host of friends.

Peg J. Moeller, age 54, of Hooper, Nebraska passed away Friday, December 25, 2015, at her home. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Hooper. The Rev. Peg was born October 4, 1961 in Lincoln, Nebraska to Marvin and Elsie ‘Sienknecht’ Carlson. She grew up on a farm near Overton, Nebraska. She graduated from Overton High School in 1979 then attended Midland Lutheran College for two years. After college she worked in Fremont. She married Sid Moeller On April 2, 1988. They lived on farms in the Hooper area and started their family. Peg worked at various places but most recently she was employed at Duane Svec Advertising in Hooper.

Kathleen L. Swift age 63 of Arlington, NE passed away Friday Dec. 25, 2015 at her home near Telbasta, NE. She was born Aug. 30, 1952 at Council Bluffs, IA to Donald and Lucille Ahart. Kathleen was raised in Council Bluffs and lived at Neola, IA for a few years after high school. She married Scott Swift on September 13, 1987 in Springfield, NE. In 1987 she moved to Arlington, NE. She worked as a Home Health Care Specialist for Northstar Services retiring in Sept. of 2014.
Kathleen and Scott were former 4-H Leaders and Cub Scout Leaders in the Arlington Area.
Survivors include, her husband, Scott Swift of Arlington, NE; sons, Zachary Swift and wife Emily of Arlington, NE and Jeremy Swift and special friend Sarah Leibert of Fremont; daughter, Megan Von Seggern and husband Chris of Oakland, NE; mother, Lucille Ahart of Neola. IA; sister Lori Ahart and 3 grandchildren.
Preceded in death by, her father, Donald and 1 brother.
Memorial Service 11 AM Thursday, Dec. 31, 2015 at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. Family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service on Thursday.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is inviting the public to ring in the New Year by enjoying a guided hike through one of the state’s scenic state park lands.
First Day Hikes are scheduled at six Nebraska parks on New Year’s Day, part of a larger effort of the America’s State Parks alliance.
Bob Hanover, assistant parks division administrator, said the hikes are a great way to get outside, enjoy nature, exercise and enjoy time with friends and family. The hikes are 1-3 miles with varying degrees of difficulty.
Participants are encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather and bring drinking water and snacks. Pets are welcome on most of the hikes, but must be on a leash no more than six feet long. The hikes are designed to be family-friendly, but some may be challenging especially for small children and people pushing strollers.
More information about each of the hikes is available by visiting the “calendar” link at OutdoorNebraska.org. Vehicles entering the parks must have a 2016 park entry permit, available online at outdoornebraska.org, or from vendors across the state.

Ash Hollow State Historical Park, Lewellen, 10 a.m., Picnic Grounds, 3 miles, easy. Informative hike about area history.
Chadron State Park, Chadron, 10 a.m., Sawmill Shelter, 2 miles, moderate. Agate Fossil Beds National Monument staff will join in leading an informative nature hike.
Fremont State Recreation Area, Fremont, 10 a.m., Tow Line Concession, 2.5 miles, easy. Nature hike will feature hot chocolate and a look at new facilities and trails.
Mahoney State Park, Ashland, 3 p.m., Kountze Memorial Theater, 1 mile, moderate. Bonfire will commemorate park’s 25th anniversary following the hike. Hot chocolate and popcorn available for 25 cents each.
Platte River State Park, Louisville, 9 a.m., Walter Scott Lodge, 1.5 miles, easy. Hot chocolate served after a hike through the woods.
Ponca State Park, Ponca, 2 p.m., The Riverfront, 1.4 miles, moderate/difficult. First installment of the Ponca State Park Hiking Marathon Challenge series.
