Marjorie Hilliard, age 87, of Hooper, Nebraska passed away Saturday, December 30, 2017, at Nye Point in Fremont, NE. Marjorie was born February 24, 1930, on a farm in Humphrey, NE to Mary and Joseph Joerger. She grew up and attended school at St. Francis School in Humphrey and worked on the farm on the home place.

She married in Yankton, SD, took care of her family, and cleaned homes for the elderly. In 1973, she went to work for the Hooper Care Center where she was the Supervisor of Housekeeping and retired in 1996. She enjoyed reading and embroidery and visiting her children. She belonged to St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and the St. Rose Guild.

Survivors include her brother Don Joerger and wife Mary of Twin Falls, ID, children Judy Hall and late husband Ron of Spring Branch, TX, Jeanette Cordes and husband Phil of Scribner, NE, Earl Hilliard and wife Lori of Fremont, NE, Ernie Hilliard and wife Cherrie of Orange City, IA, Mary Knott and husband Rick of Berthoud, CO, Lyle Hilliard of Prague, NE, Larry Hilliard of North Bend, NE, and Rose Hilliard and husband Stacy Glascow of Berthoud, CO, 20 Grandchildren and 36 Great Grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by parents, Mary and Joseph Joerger, brothers, Gene, Harold, John and Gerald Joerger, sisters, Evelyn Hemmer and Sally Bender, son, Jim Hilliard, and great-granddaughter Trinity Dart.

Dale F. Dale was born June 20, 1930 at home in Hooper to William and Esther ‘Steunkel’ Pawling. He was raised in Hooper and graduated from Hooper High School in 1947. After high school he served in the Navy from 1950 to 1954. After returning from his military service he drove for his family trucking company, Pawling Transfer, then drove a bulk milk truck for Feller’s and Berkley Wolf. Dale married Marian Appel in 1957, with their family they began Prairie Angels Craft. The family made and sold their crafts at many fairs and even hosted special events at their house.

Dale was a member of VFW Post 10535 in Hooper and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Fremont.

Edward R. Mundil age 74, of Hooper passed away Wednesday August 9, 2017 at Dunklau Gardens.

The funeral mass will be 11am Saturday, August 12 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Hooper.  Rev. Damien Wee will officiate.  Lunch will follow the service with the committal in the Clarkson National Cemetery.  Visitation will be on Friday at Ludvigsen’s Hooper Funeral Chapel with the family from 5pm to 8pm.  Visitation will continue for one hour at the church in Hooper.  Memorials are suggested to the Logan View Education Foundation.

Ed was born January 19, 1943 on a farm near Dodge, Nebraska to Jerry and Ida ‘Karel’ Mundil.  The family moved to a farm near Clarkson, Nebraska where he attended country school and graduated from Clarkson High School in 1961.  He received his Bachelor Degree from Wayne State College in 1965 and Masters Degree in 1971 from Kearney State College (now University of Nebraska at Kearney).  Ed taught in Aurora, Nebraska for 6 years then began his career at Logan View Public Schools in the fall of 1971 where he remained until he retired.  Ed and his wife Joan owned and operated Happy Acres Greenery near Uehling.

Ed started the Science Fair at Logan View, he taught advanced Biology for college credit.  He was involved in the Logan View Education Association and the Logan View Education Foundation.  He was baptized, had first communion, and confirmed all at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Hooper.

Ed was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Nebraska Education Association, Hooper Commercial Club, Uehling Business Club, Uehling Lions Club, Uehling Famous Follies and Drama Association (UFFDA), Nebraska Florist Society, Omaha Magical Society and was an Admiral in the Great Navy of the State of Nebraska.  Ed taught Hunters Safety and he helped organize the ESU Science Fair.

Janice F. Nuzum, age 77, of Hooper, Nebraska passed away Monday October 31, 2016 at the Hooper Care Center.  Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at Elim Lutheran Church at Swaburg.  The Rev. Janice was born April 25, 1939 in Los Angeles, CA. to Willis and Ruth ‘Stewart’ Wheatley. The family moved back to Nebraska when she was 3 weeks old. She was raised in several different communities until settling down in Uehling. Janice graduated from Uehling High School in 1956 and enrolled in beauty school. She married Norman Petersen in 1958 and together they had 3 children. Janice operated a beauty salon for a few years, then was a stay at home mom until the early 1970’s when she went to work at Logan View High School. Janice married Hershel Nuzum on June 13, 1980. The coupled moved to western Nebraska for a short time, returning to live in Hooper. Janice worked at the Dodge County Courthouse as a custodian then for the Fremont Public Schools as a bus aid, retiring in 2014.

Janice had many hobbies, among them was collecting dolls and making clothes for them. She also loved crafts, antiques, quilting and was very involved with genealogy.

Erwin J. Hilliard, 89, of Hooper NE


Erwin J. Hilliard, age 89, of Hooper, Nebraska passed September 19, 2016 at the Hooper Care Center.

Services will be 10am Saturday September 24 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Hooper.  The Rev. Damien Wee will officiate.  Burial will follow in the Hooper Cemetery with Military Honors.  Visitation will be Friday from 3pm to 8pm with the family present from 6pm to 8pm at Ludvigsen’s Hooper Funeral Chapel.   Memorials may be given to the Hooper Care Center at 400 E. He was born February 10, 1927 on a farm outside of Neligh, NE to Frank and Magdalena Haake Hilliard. He grew up and attended school in Newman Grove, NE.  He enlisted in the US Navy on February 29, 1944 and was honorably discharged May 11, 1946.  Erwin returned to Nebraska as a farm hand.  He married Marjorie Joerger on April 4, 1949 in Yankton, SD and worked on various farms in Madison, Wisner, Stanton and Randolph, NE.

In 1959 he moved his family to Howells, NE and worked for Risch Implement for 3 years. In 1962 he and his family moved to Hooper, NE where he worked for Kassmeier Implement until he retired in 1989. During his retirement he enjoyed traveling to see his family in Oregon, Washington, Kansas, Texas, and Colorado. Gardening, yard work and reading the “Good Book” were his favorite pastimes.

Survivors include his sister, Marian Little of Port Angeles, WA, ex-wife Marjorie Hilliard of Hooper, his children Judy Hall and late husband Ron of Spring Branch, TX, Jeanette Cordes and husband Phil of Scribner, NE, Earl Hilliard and his wife Lori of Fremont, NE, Ernie Hilliard and wife Cherrie of Orange City, IA, Mary Knott and husband Rick of Berthoud, CO, Lyle Hilliard of Prague, NE, Larry Hilliard of North Bend, NE, and Rose Hilliard and husband Stacy Glasgow of Longmont, CO, 20 Grandchildren and 34 Great-Grandchildren.

Joanne K. Bowman age 68, of Arizona formerly of Uehling passed away Monday June 6th at Southlake Village in Lincoln.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday June 29th from 6pm to 8pm at Ludvigsen’s Hooper Funeral Chapel in Hooper.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 on Thursday June 30 at Elim Lutheran Church in Swaburg.

Joan was born to Melvin and Lois ‘Meyer’ Bowman on July 2, 1947.  She was baptized and confirmed at Elim Lutheran Church in Swaburg, and graduated from Uehling High School in 1965.  She attended Midland University in Fremont and graduated from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln with a degree in Fashion Merchandizing in 1969.

Joanne was a lifelong businesswoman, who was employed as a buyer, merchandizer, and later in realty.  Interests included travel (especially to Hawaii) and reading.  She was a steadfast friend with one terrific sense of humor.

Joanne is the sister of Ron (Anita) Bowman of Fremont and aunt of Elizabeth (Ken) Halvorsen, Erik (Crystal) Bowman of Lincoln and Alicia (Erich) Schafer of Cedar Springs, Michigan.  She is the great aunt of Jordan, Kaitlyn, Brigham, Ellianna, and Zahara.  She was a cousin to a multitude.

Mary Ann (Wollmer) Tonjes, 85, of Hooper NE

She was born January 18, 1931 in Pender to John and Olga (Heyne) Wollmer. When she was a year old, her family moved to Hooper. After graduating from Hooper High School in 1948, she attended Midland College for two years and graduated from the University of Nebraska School of Nursing in 1953. She married Eugene (Gene) Tonjes April 25, 1954.

Mary Ann and Gene were avid sports fans; holding season-tickets to Nebraska football and following all Husker and local sports teams. They enjoyed playing golf and traveling to attend the activities of their eight grandchildren. Mary Ann loved reading and playing bridge and was a member of several bridge clubs.

, Mary Ann worked at the Hooper Clinic with Dr. William G. Heusel for 17 years. She then joined the staff of Logan View Junior Senior High School where she worked as School Nurse for 15 years until her retirement in 1997.

She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Hooper, the Hooper Legion Auxiliary, the Nebraska Alumni Association and the Nebraska State Education Association.

Survivors include son and daughter-in-law Mark and Kendall Tonjes of Lincoln; daughters and sons-in-law Jane and Joe Camenzind of Wichita, Kansas and Susie and Steve Hultgren of Fremont; grandchildren Matt and Megan Tonjes, John, Ryan, Mark and Jacob Camenzind, Josh and Taylor Dahl, sister-in-law Marlene Moeller and special cousins Carolyn Von Seggern, Beverly Peterson and Sheila Larson. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and sister.

Scott A. Larsen, 54, of Hooper NE


Scott A. Larsen age 54, of Hooper
Died Friday March 18, 2016 at his home.

Scott was born August 7, 1961 in Fremont to Darrel and Carolyn ‘Moore’ Larsen. He was raised in Fremont through junior high then moved with his family to a farm just outside of Hooper. He graduated from Logan View High School in 1979. After school he worked construction for Ehler’s Construction and Dale Reynolds before going to work for Excel in Schuyler for several years.

Scott liked to hunt, fish, and bowl and was a member of several bowling leagues in Fremont. He was a big Kansas City Royals and Denver Bronco’s fan. He was confirmed at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Hooper, where he was still a member.
