New to Medicare Workshop

Celebrate your upcoming 65th birthday by attending a “New to Medicare!” class.

If you or a family member will be turning 65 in the near future, it’s a milestone birthday and a cause for celebration. It can also be a cause for concern and confusion.

Once you know the basics you can handle the rest, or at least will know who to call for help.

 

Join the Medicare Basics informational meeting on Tuesday, September 26 at the Dodge County Extension Office at 1206 West 23rd Street, Fremont NE.

 

The meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. and absolutely nothing will be marketed or sold at this event. It’s a free informational meeting presented by Mary Loftis, a trained Senior Health Insurance Information Program counselor. Anyone from any county or community is welcome to take part in this program. Family members are encouraged to also attend.

 

Please call Nebraska Extension in Dodge County at 402-727-2775 or in Burt County at 402-374-2929 to register so enough materials will be available for the meeting.

This week on Thursday September 7th we will be having a 30-year Staff Anniversary party for Judy Schernikau at 2:30 pm.  On Saturday September 9th, it’s another Nebraska game at 3:30 pm. Then on Sunday is Grandparents Day and we will be having a Grandparents Day Potluck at noon, Family members are invited to come and have dinner with their loved ones. It is a potluck so please bring a potluck dish if you are planning on coming. Next week on Monday September 11th is our monthly Volunteer Executive Meeting at 2:30pm. Thursday September 14th Charlie Davis will be here to play his Harmonica at 2:30 pm. and on Friday September 15th is Happy Hour starting at 2:30. We have two residents celebrating Birthday’s Violet McCartney on September 12th and Jene Hightree on September 16th.

There will be no Church service next Sunday due to the Grandparents Day Potluck Dinner. On Tuesday September 12th is Catholic Mass given by Father Paul at 9:30 am.

Activities for the week of September 11th to September 16th   are as follows, reading with Suzanne, Manicures, Sing A Long, Game Day, Bingo the w/Evang. Free, Mike Barger, Show n Share, Bible Fellowship, Let’s Play Ball, Crafty Cooking, Saturday Video, Nebraska Football, and Lawrence Walk.

Volunteers signing in last week were; Suzanne Sanderson, Cover McCauley, Bonnie Fleischman, Nadine Anderson, Kristin and Monroe Johnson,  Sue Beckner, Judy Nelson, Dani Moseman, Betty Hanna, Anne Anderson, Patty Miller, Marge Maller, Mary Donavon, and Makayla Johnson.

Joel “Joe” Bernard Penny, 65, of Decatur NE

Joel “Joe” Bernard Penny was born to Forrest and Lucille (Gatewood) Penny on March 15, 1952 in Oakland, Nebraska. He passed away Thursday, August 31, 2017 in Pierre, South Dakota.

Joe grew up on a farm south of Decatur, Nebraska. He worked for the railroad for a couple of years before he started farming. At the time of his death he was raising cattle and farming land around Burt County, including the original Penny family farm.

Joe loved to ride his motorcycle, hunt, and ride horses. He was an animated storyteller and would stop to visit friends spontaneously. No matter where Joe went or who he met, they wouldn’t forget meeting him. He was one of a kind.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Colt; brother-in-law, Bob Mussack.

Joe is survived by his wife, Brenda (Weston) of Decatur, daughters: Jennifer Penny of Decatur, Molly (David) Dickinson of Milford, NE, Fawn Barger of Scottsdale, AZ, Tyler Rambeau of Flandreau, SD; sons: Sage and Hawk Penny of Decatur; grandchildren: Brady, Jacqulyn and Colt Barger, Hunter, Cash and Penny Dickinson, and Jacob Fisherman; brother, Phil Penny of Decatur; sisters: Cindy Mussack of Omaha, NE, Sandy (Greg) Brummond of Craig, NE; step-sisters: Mary (Scott) Christ, Jean Wiersman; step-brother, Dan (Heidi) Mussack; his first wife Deborah Connealy; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and thousands of friends!

Visitation is Monday, September 4th from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at Pelan Funeral Services in Tekamah, NE.

Funeral services will be held at the Decatur Firehall on Tuesday, September 5th at 10:30 a.m.

Burial is in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Decatur Ne.

Memorials suggested to the family for future designation.

Decatur Bridge to Open to Two-Lane Traffic Today

According to the Nebraska Department of Transportation, the  Decatur bridge will be open to two-lane traffic today, September 1.

 

Motorists should be aware of intermittent flagging operations to allow for minor work and seeding.

Joel B. Penny of Decatur, Nebraska, passed away Thursday, August 31, 2017.

Visitation is Monday, September 4th from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at Pelan Funeral Services in Tekamah. Family will be receiving friends.

The Funeral Service is Tuesday, September 5th at 10:30 a.m. at the Decatur Fire Hall.

Burial is in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Decatur, NE.

The Devastation of Hurricane Harvey

As I watched the news earlier this morning, catching up on Hurricane Harvey, my heart was broken. 

Hurricane Harvey is causing massive destruction, to say the least. The flooding it has caused due to the huge amount of rainfall, currently over 50 inches in Houston, is a record in the United States. This isn’t the kind of record people want to see broken at all. I can’t imagine how long it will take for people to recover from the hurricane, if they ever do. Many, many people have lost their home, all of their belongings and don’t have a job to support their families, much less the means to get to their job if they could go.

There are people that need medications. How will they get them? What about people on oxygen? There are pregnant women giving birth during this and the hospitals are low on supplies. I saw a report of a woman whom gave birth while waiting for emergency responders to arrive. Luckily, they arrived right after she gave birth.

What about those expecting their social security checks? For many, that is their only means of support. We all know the saying about mail being delivered no matter what the weather conditions. I doubt whoever made up the saying counted on a record breaking hurricane to stop the mail from being delivered.

There are many blessings to consider as well. People are going to Texas, not just from all over the state, but from all over the country, to help rescue those stranded in their homes, on roofs or floating in the water and take them to safety. They are showing the entire country that people need to come together, unify as one, to help and do what true Americans do, help those in time of need. There is one local gal in Texas doing all she can to help. Susan Seery is on the scene. She is on the Oakland Fire Department. She is also a member of the Red Cross, serving as a supervisor and in part of the DAT-Disaster Action Team. God Bless her for all she is doing, helping those that are displaced by Harvey. 

This country is not a country full of hate, as some media sights claim. Take a look at Texas and you will see, this country is full of love for one another.
