Hassebrook and Ricketts Have Second Debate

Gubernatorial candidates Chuck Hassebrook and Pete Ricketts met in Lincoln for their second debate, and the differences between the two couldn’t be clearer.

“Pete continues to throw out typical partisan attacks and push the same old recycled ideas that we’ve heard from him and every other extremist, out of touch politician for years. Middle class Nebraskans can’t trust Pete to work for them when his track record works against them,” said Hassebrook.

“Governor of Nebraska isn’t an entry-level or a part-time job. We need a proven leader who can effectively manage government and oversee state agencies – and that’s Chuck Hassebrook,” said Hassebrook Communications Director Meg Mandy.

Main Street Coffee in Oakland for Byway of Art Project

Many Oakland citizens, business owners, members of the Oakland-Craig High School Art Club, and others interested in the Byway of Art project, attended the Main Street Coffee on Monday.

The coffee took place next to the Masonic Lodge in Oakland. The setting resembled a cozy living room, furnished with a couch, chairs and a coffee table in the middle.

The Center for Rural Affairs has received a grant to create an art project, not only in Oakland, but also in Lyons, Decatur and Macy as well. Artist Matthew Mazzotta will lead the way in creating an art project to be on display in each community, based on each towns own identity, qualities and history. Matthew will have many other artists to assist him, such as local artists and art students from the schools in each area.

There were questions handed out to each person at the coffee to help in formulating the type of art project by way of discussion during the afternoon.

One of the most prominent questions asked was “What do you thing about your town’s identity?” Everyone there agreed Oakland is known as being Swedish. There were those voicing concerns over the Swedish Festival and how it has dwindled in previous years. Everyone agreed more people need to step up and help with it, as there are those that do so much, and others helping would be appreciated, and hopefully, boost the festival back to what it use to be. Karl Lundquist is in charge of the next festival. If interested in assisted Karl, please call him.

Former Oaklander Tom Wallerstedt has moved back to Oakland. He is the new curator at the Swedish Heritage Center. “He is doing a wonderful job. We are glad to have him as curator. More and more people are now visiting the center,” Joanne Peterson said.

Another question involved keeping the town alive, and how to do so. Many consider the school as a factor in the town’s livelihood. It isn’t just the school that keeps the town alive though. “The town thrives based on population base and businesses. There are also many commuters that choose to live here,” stated Rachel Wise, also the State Board of Education President.

The conversation took on a life of it’s own after that. “People feel safe here. We don’t have to worry about being shot at,” stated Joanne Peterson.

Where the project will be located in Oakland is still a mystery. “We will be doing the art project next summer. We don’t know where yet, but it will be designed specifically to Oakland,” Matthew said.

For those who missed the coffee, Matthew will be back in about three weeks. When and where hasn’t been decided yet, but when the decision is made, Kat Country Hub will let everyone know.

Debbie Anderson of Oakland was one of the organizers for this event. For further information, or if you would like to answer the questions pertaining to the art project, contact her. They are also available on the Byway of Art Facebook page.

Sunset by Uehling NE

As we were driving to Fremont, we saw a breath taking sunset. I love nature pictures! We didn't have time to stop, so this was taken while going down the road. I wasn't driving. Not too bad for my smartphone! Photo Credit/Denise Gilliland, Editor and Chief, Kat Country Hub.

Author Bruce Hopkins Coming to John G. Neihardt State Historic Site

The John G. Neihardt State Historic Site invites the public to a reading and book discussion at this month’s “Sunday Afternoon at the Museum.”  At 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 12, 2014, author Bruce Hopkins, a noted environmentalist, teacher, and writer from the Loess Hills region of Iowa, will read from his collection of essays and poetry Truth in the Rivers.

This work is illustrated with watercolors by Howard Horii, an artist and architect from the New York City/New Jersey area. Broken into three sections, the first follows Horii’s life from his time as a young Japanese American student in the 1940s in California, to relocation and internment in Arizona after the attack on Pearl Harbor, to Horii as a successful artist and architect.

The second section addresses the author’s experiences as a Black Studies teacher during the 1960s and his travels with African American colleagues to the East Coast and the Deep South during that time.  The third section explores ways to understand and learn from this difficult past.  Hopkins considers the necessity of education as a means to provide children with the means to face the civic and moral issues they will face.  This is a story of human resilience, determination in the light of adversity, and the human ability to sustain the creative voice in the face of difficulty.  We look forward to an afternoon of introspection, reflection, and mindful storytelling.

Several of Horii’s watercolors will be on display. Books—including Truth in the River and his other notable work When Foxes Wore Red Vests—will be available for purchase and signing.  Reception will follow the program.  We also invite you to peruse our selection of books and CDs as well as local beadwork.  The Neihardt State Historic Site is located at 306 W. Elm St., Bancroft, NE.  Both the program and reception are free and open to the public.  For more information, call 1-888-777-4667 or contact us through email at Neihardt @gpcom.net.  “Like” us on Facebook at John G Neihardt State Historic Site to stay informed about programming.

Darcey Simonsen

How does if feel to be starting your senior year of high school?

I’m excited to start but, disappointed it’s going to be over soon.

What activities do you participate in at school?

I am in volleyball, basketball, track, dance, drama, FFA, FBLA.

What is your favorite class in school?

My favorite class would have to be welding because it is something different that I have never done before.

Who, among all of your teachers through the years, have been your biggest influencers? What did you learn from them that has made you who you are?

Mr. Cronin was our principal, just left last year. He taught me to push myself to be great. He sees the potential I have and has told me over and over and over, I can do great things. I will never forget our conversations or the skills he has taught me. Of course you can’t forget the fun times too.

What have been some of your favorite moments in school?

My favorite moments in school have been the sports of course. But, I couldn’t ask for better people to be with. Homecoming week and all the things we do as a school wouldn’t happen if it weren’t for the people we have at our school.

Are you planning for college? Getting ready by filling out scholarship applications?

I plan on going to college. I have started filling out applications and such.

Where are you going to college? Do you know what you want to be?

I don’t know where I am going but, I plan on playing sports while in college. So far I am set on majoring in Criminal Justice.

  1. I am sure you want to enjoy every moment of high school, what do you look forward to the most?

I can’t say I look forward to anything because I don’t know if I want it to end just yet. I am looking forward to track season definitely though. It’s because it’s what I love to do.
