New Correction on Hassebrook/Ricketts Debate

Chuck Hassebrook has released the following statement to clarify his statement in last night’s debate.

In the debate, Hassebrook said that he had the endorsements of the “Presidents and Board chairs of commodity organizations for every one of the five major Nebraska commodities: beef, pork, corn, soy beans, and wheat.”

Hassebrook meant to say that he had the endorsements of past Presidents and Board Chairs. The mistake was unintentional and he apologizes for accidentally dropping the word “past” from his remark.

Hassebrook has been endorsed by the Nebraska Farmers Union as well as the following past Presidents and Board Chairs from major commodity boards or associations. Each served in the past as either state or national positions with organizations or boards representing the following commodities.

  • Frank Johannsen (Bayard, NE), Wheat
  • Phil Hardenberger (Crete, NE), Pork
  • John Klosterman (David City, NE), Cattle
  • Chuck Myers (Lyons, NE), Soybean
  • Ron Woollen (Wilcox, NE), Corn
  • Lemoine Smith (Minden, NE), Corn
  • Rod Hassebrook (Platte Center, NE),  Corn
  • Matt Connealy (Decatur, NE),  Corn
  • Roy Smith (Plattsmouth, NE),  Soybean
  • Cheryl Burkhard-Kriesel (Gurley, NE), Wheat

Turnovers Decide Cougar Win

Turnovers proved to be the deciding factor as the Northeast Cougars took a 46-40 win over Bancroft-Rosalie, last Friday. The teams traded scores during the first half, but a fumble recovery and pass interception by LDNE sent the Cougars to the lockers with a 40-24 half time lead.

The Cougars stretched their lead to 46-24 in the third period.  Henneman and Christiansen had a pass and catch that covered 21 yards.

Bancroft-Rosalie did get two scores in the third period.  After a 20 yard run and Tietz’s third TD pass the Panthers closed to a 46-20 deficit.

Coach Maresh said that the defenses played really well in the fourth quarter.  Neither team scored. The coach added that defense rose to the occasion and played their assignment as well they have all season.

Social Speaks: California Bans Plastic Bags

California is the first state to ban plastic bags in stores, such as Walmart. The ban goes into effect next year. What do you think of this? Should more states do the same?

  • Kay Desh Steinmeyer I use reusable bags most of the time. I think they are easier to carry in from the car. HyVee gives you 5 cents for every bag you bring and use. I think it would be a great idea.
  • Jeannene Schutt The fact that they don’t even give you the paper option is not good. Whole Foods uses all recycled paper bags. With handles…I forget how nice it is to have your groceries not just thrown in a bag…that you hope doesn’t break before you get in the house.
  • Nickie Robinson Go back to paper! I hate when they give me plastic bags!
  • Tami Friedl Hovendick Absolutely!!! Before paper and plastic they had cloth bags that the people carried for their groceries and wares.. There is NO reason we can’t go back to that.. This poor county has so my trash and little because people are just plain lazy.. I congratulate them and hope more states follow.. I am sure in other countries they don’t have as much trash as the US.
