Potential Scams Reported
During Medicare Open Enrollment several Burt County residents received calls or messages via telephone. These different messages offered from $1,000 to $3,000 in coupons which could be used for regular household items and they could receive a FREE Life Line.
The individuals did not respond in any way to the offers as they were aware it was probably a scam.
This is an additional tactic being used to get information from individuals. In order to protect yourself and others, remember “If it’s FREE, it’s TOO EXPENSIVE!”
Additional scam example sent from the Nebraska Department of Health & Human Services:
A retired Special Agent of the FBI was stung by this scam and related the following as a warning for the rest of us.
**********************************
Just when you thought you’d heard it all. This scam is actually very clever. Be very careful out there! This one could easily slip by most anyone – beware of people bearing gifts. The following is a recounting of the incident from the victim:
Wednesday a week ago, I had a phone call from someone saying that he was from some outfit called: “Express Couriers,”(The name could have been anything) he asked if I was going to be home because there was a package delivery for me that required a signature. The caller said that the delivery would arrive at my home in roughly an hour, and sure enough, about an hour later, a uniformed deliveryman turned up with a beautiful basket of flowers and wine. I was very surprised since it did not involve any special occasion or holiday, and I certainly didn’t expect anything like it. Intrigued about who had sent me such a gift, I inquired as to who the sender was. The deliveryman’s reply was, he was only delivering the gift package, but allegedly a card was being sent separately… (the card has never arrived!) There was also a consignment note with the gift.
He then went on to explain that because the gift contained alcohol, there was a $3.50 “delivery/ verification charge,” providing proof that he had actually delivered the package to an adult of legal drinking age, and not just left it on the doorstep where it could be stolen or taken by anyone, especially a minor.
This sounded logical and I offered to pay him cash. He then said that the delivery company required payment to be by credit or debit card only, so that everything is properly accounted for, and this would keep help in keeping a legal record of the transaction. He added couriers not needing to carry a bunch of cash, would make them less likely targets for robbery.
My husband, who by this time was standing beside me, pulled his wallet out of his pocket with the credit/debit card, and ‘John,’ the “delivery man,” asked my husband to swipe his card on a small mobile card machine. It had a small screen and keypad where Frank was also asked to enter the card’s PIN and security number. A receipt was printed out and given to us as our copy of the transaction. He then said everything was in order, and wished us good day.
To our horrible surprise, between Thursday and the following Monday, $4,000 had been charged/withdrawn from our credit/debit account at various ATM machines. It appeared that somehow the “mobile credit card machine,” which the deliveryman carried now had all the info necessary to create a “dummy” card with all our card details after my husband swiped our card and entered the requested PIN and security number.
Upon finding out about the illegal transactions on our card, we immediately notified the bank which issued us a new card, and our credit/debit account was closed.
We also personally went to the Police, where it was confirmed that it is definitely a scam because several households had been similarly hit.
WARNING: Be wary of accepting any “surprise gift or package,” which you neither expected nor personally ordered, especially if it involves any kind of payment as a condition of receiving the gift or package. Also, never accept anything if you do not personally know or there is no proper identification of who the sender is. Above all, the only time you should give out any personal credit/debit card information is when you yourself initiated the purchase or transaction!
Pass this on it may just prevent someone else from being swindled.

Lyons-Decatur Northeast went head to head with Scribner-Snyder last Thursday in a hard fought basketball game.
Seven Cougars hit the hoops for the Cougars. Dakota Riecken had 20 points and two rebounds. He also went six for ten at the line.
Henneman had six points, Brehmer 4, Simpson seven, Hegy five, Bishop five and Montana Riecken had two.
Despite all of their efforts, the Cougars lost 57-52. “Scribner-Snyder is a good team that is always improving. We must continue to learn and accept our roles,” stated Head Coach Derek Lahm.
Saturday night LDNE played Bancroft Rosalie. This game wasn’t quite the match-up as the Scribner-Snyder game was as the Cougars lost 84-60.
Despite the loss, the Cougars had four players hit double figures, with Dakota Riecken leading the way again this game with 21 points and eight rebounds.
Henneman and Brehmer each had ten points, Simpson had eight, and Hegy had ten.
Brehmer went five for seven at the line, D. Riecken went six for ten and Hegy hit four out of six.
The score is not a reflection of the effort the Cougars made. “The game was a 10-point game until the 6:30 mark of the 4th quarter. We need to eliminate silly mistakes and turnovers and make some adjustments in terms of our effort on defense and rebounding,” said Derek Lahm.
The Cougars next round of action is on Fri.. Dec. 20th at home against Howells-Dodge. Games begin with JV hitting the court at 4:30 p.m.

NEBRASKA LEGISLATURE NATURAL RESOURCES COMMITTEE TO HOLD PUBLIC HEARING ON FINANCING OPTIONS FOR GAME AND PARKS COMMISSION
Wednesday, December 11, 2013
District 16 State Senator Lydia Brasch, Vice-Chair of the Natural Resources Committee, wants to inform citizens of a public interim hearing scheduled tomorrow, Wednesday, December 11 addressing Legislative Resolution 205. LR 205 was introduced by Senator Bill Avery as an interim study to examine the mission and financing options of the Game and Parks Commission as authorized by current law. “This is an opportunity for citizens to express their views and suggest alternatives for State Park Funding. We have received calls, emails, letters and inquiries regarding future funding for our State Parks,” Senator Brasch states.
The resolution and hearing provides a means of gathering more information regarding Avery’s Legislative Bill 362, which, according to the committee statement, “would eliminate the permit that Nebraska residents are now required to purchase for entry into state parks and would place a $7 registration fee on certain motor vehicles to replace the revenue from the permit fees. The bill would provide open access to state parks for all Nebraska residents, and would provide a revenue stream to be used for repairs, updates and maintenance of state park facilities. Non-residents would still be required to purchase park entry permits.”
Citizens in Washington, Burt, and Cuming counties have expressed both opposition to and support of replacing a park entry fee with a vehicle registration fee. All those interested in the outcome of the issue are encouraged to attend the public hearing to be held:
