Domestic violence encompasses many forms of abuse: emotional, verbal, isolation, threats, intimidation, and physical violence.  In an abusive relationship, the abuser may use a number of tactics other than physical violence to maintain power and control over their partner.  Abuse can occur within a number of relationships between marriages, roommates, dating couples, even in later life by family members.

The Crisis Center promotes healthy relationships.  We focus on the safety of victims when working with them.  Every situation and individual we work with is different, and so are the outcomes.  We are committed to the prevention and elimination of domestic violence and sexual assault.

Everyone deserves to live a life without violence, please help make that a reality for someone in your community.  During this month please be aware of those around you; offer your support and give them our 24 hour crisis line number (1.888.721.4340). Help us make a difference in the lives of women and children in Burt, Cuming, Dodge, Saunders, and Washington counties.

Schlichting attends historical car auction in Pierce

Lyons resident, Steve Schlichting, was among the estimated 15,000 people who attended the Lambrecht Auto Auction in Pierce, NE this past weekend.

“It was insanity in Pierce,” Schlichting stated. “It was wall to wall people in a field. It was so crowded by the auctioneer’s table, I couldn’t even move.”

Parking at the auction was also quite a challenge, and could be costly. “There was parking all over a nearby golf course. Somebody said it was $50 to park there. I don’t know if that was for campers or what,” Schlichting said. “We paid $20 and parked in a field that a church group had. At least the money went to a good cause.”

The car collection began some 50 years ago. Ray and Mildred Lambrecht, owners of the vehicles, had a car dealership. The cars that didn’t sell, they kept and parked them in this field. They accumulated 500 cars that were sold this past weekend. Some had very few miles on the odometer. Others weren’t in that great of shape.

“A 1958 Chevy pickup went for $140,000. It had 1.3 miles on it. It looked like something had been dropped on it,” Schlichting stated. “The passenger side was dented down about two inches and the glass was cracked.”

Steve’s sister Jean also attended the event. “I told here I wanted to see the cars being sold. It took me half an hour to get through the crowd. I saw the Corvette sell,” Schlichting said. “It was a 1978 Corvette with 4.4 miles on the odometer. It sold for $80,000. Some of the prices people paid were insane.” It was estimated, at the close of the auction on Sunday, that over four million dollars was paid for the vehicles.

Steve didn’t go to bid on anything. “I left my wallet at home,” Schlichting stated.

Many people watched the historical event from their computers or viewed it on the history channel. “I watched it later. I saw myself on TV. That is my 15 minutes of fame,” Schlichting said.

Kats’ Korner

I am sitting at my office, wondering if the government is going to shut down in the next 10 hours.

I am not an expert on how a government works and what the effect of it shutting down will have, but I do know this is not good.

I am very disappointed in our elected leaders. I am to the point that whomever I voted for will not get my vote again. I am so ashamed of all of them. They seem to be willing to sacrifice people, this country, because they have an agenda.

October 17 is also a critical day. If things don’t change, we won’t be able to borrow money after that day.

I don’t believe anyone in the congress, senate, or the president, should receive a paycheck since they are going to be hurting others. They don’t deserve to be paid for doing a lousy job.

I hope the next president can fix this mess. I hope we also have many new congressmen and senators next election.

I had the flu, combination cold, last week. I couldn’t sleep at night and was tired all day.

What a miserable week. Now I am fighting allergies. That is normal for me though. I don’t like having a cold.

I didn’t lose my appetite though. I ate soup and drank lots of water and juice. I ate plenty of fruit too.

I am just glad that is over. I hear there is a lot going around. Please be cautious, wash you hands often and get the flu shot!

There is a nice place in Oakland that I have enjoyed many times over the years. It is the Troll Stroll on the east end of town.

When my kids and my sister, Angie’s kids were little, we use to take them through it quite often.

Lawrence Faudel was quite a gifted artist. He painted many of the trolls over the years. Unfortunately, there are always those who have to do harm to something beautiful. The park was vandalized many times over the years, causing damage to the trolls.

Things are improving now, thanks to the city of Oakland employees and past Oakland seniors who would do community service one day towards the end of the school year all over Oakland and Craig, including the Troll Stroll. Many dead trees were cut down and taken out of the park. New bridges have been replaced old ones. Other new items have been placed in the park too.

My husband proposed to me on one of the bridges nearly 18 years ago. It has since been replaced, but is in the same location.

It is a nice place to walk through and visit. It is very beautiful!

Thought for the Day: Fall is here. Let’s enjoy the changing colors of the season!

Have a great week, until we meet again!
