Come to the Fair

By Mary Loftis, Extension Associate

Come to the Fair!

Come one, come all and “Enjoy the Ride” to the “Best Show on Burt County Dirt!”

How’s that for combining a couple good county fair themes? The Burt County Fair is set to officially begin Friday, August 4th and will run until Tuesday, August 8th on the Burt County Fairgrounds in Oakland. Check out the event schedule on the Burt County Fair http://www.burtcountyfair.net website and take part in the local fun, food and friends at the fair!

4-H Scavenger Hunt

The Burt County 4-H Council is again sponsoring the very successful 4-H Scavenger Hunt they started last year. Youth ages 5-18 are invited to come to the 4-H Building on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, August 5-7 to sign in to get a 4-H Scavenger Hunt question sheet. Then explore the fairgrounds looking for answers to the questions with your family.

When you’ve completed the scavenger hunt come back to the 4-H Building and turn I your sheet. Each youth will receive 5 free carnival ride tickets and a chance to spin the big 4-H prize wheel! Additional prizes include gift certificates to the 4-H Kitchen, additional carnival tickets, and other 4-H and UNL promotional items. It’s free, it’s fun and it helps everyone learn a little more about the fair and 4-H! (Youth may only participate in the scavenger hunt once for prizes, but energetic participants can do a daily hunt just for the fun of it!) Spread the word – this activity is for all youth attending the fair!

Live-Streaming from the Fair

The Burt County Fair Foundation is trying something new this year…they are adding the technology and equipment to live-stream the livestock shows. All the technical details are being worked out on it at this moment. If you’re interested, or have family at a distance that would like to see some of the shows (especially in the arena) have them go to the Burt County Fair website at: www.burtcountyfair.net and look for a link.

4-H Rocket Launch

The 4-H Rocket Launch was a real BLAST last week with 14 4-H members participating. Comments during the event were entertaining at the least. One parent made the comment that “rocketry keeps you humble” …no matter how good your rocket looks or how often it’s launched without a hitch something can always spoil that “perfect launch”. It can also be very aerobic as a group search walked a quarter mile across the sod field and 22 rows deep into the corn field to help find a rocket! It’s also a religious experience as you’re praying the rocket will launch (and that it will be found!)

Yes, there were a few failed launches, but everyone did get their rocket into the air and all were recovered.

Results of the contest are as follows:

Purple Ribbons:

Champion: Brayden Anderson, Lyons

Reserve Champion: Colton Miller, Lyons

Caleb Schlichting, Lyons

Eli Schlichting, Lyons

Elise Anderson, Lyons

Brady Braniff, Tekamah

Linden Anderson, Lyons

Pie Day II & Fruit Cups

Don’t forget to come to the Vet’s Building in Oakland this Saturday, July 29 at 8:00 to help get the rest of the wonderful 4-H fruit pies made. Cherry, peach and apricot pies will be made since the apple, strawberry rhubarb and rhubarb pies were completed last week. Fruit Cups will be made after lunch at the 4-H Kitchen. All help is appreciated!

Fairgrounds Clean-up

Thanks to sixty-six 4-H members, leaders, families and friends, the Burt County Fairgrounds got a good cleaning Sunday afternoon. The group made quick work of all the projects on the list and then enjoyed a meal sponsored by the Burt County Fair Foundation as their thank you. You all make our county fair very special and it is much appreciated!

4-H Kitchen Photography Theme

If you’ve ever taken a photo you could qualify as a “4-H Blooper” search through your camera, your computer or your phone to find it! This is the photography theme the 4-H Council decided on this year to display in the 4-H Kitchen. Make a print of your photo, a 5”x7” size is easier to see and add any information that explains or makes the blooper funnier. Bring it to the Extension Office before the county fair, or just bring it to the fair and put it up along the food line wall in the 4-H Kitchen. Of course you may add who the photographer is, unless you’re safer if they don’t know!

Pie Day II:

If you missed helping make 101 apple and strawberry-rhubarb pies last week, you are in luck! Pie Day II is this Saturday, July 25 at the Vet’s Building in Oakland. We will start at 8:00 a.m. to make cherry, peach and apricot pies. If you like one of those types of pies, please come on over to Oakland and help. All volunteers are welcome and 4-H members and families are vital to make this big project happen. Hopefully we will be done about 2:00 p.m. (4-H Council will provide lunch for the pie makers) and we will move to the 4-H Kitchen to make the frozen fruit cups for the fair. If you are available for either or both of these pre-fair projects we would appreciate it very much. Hope to see you there!

Bicycle Rodeo:

The 4-H Bicycle Rodeo will be held this Thursday evening, July 23 at the Lutheran Church parking lot in Oakland beginning at 6:30 p.m. Spectators are always welcome, just bring your own lawn chair. The event is comprised of a safety quiz and four riding events. 4-H Clover Kids ages 5-7 are encouraged to take part as well. Bicycle helmets are encouraged for this activity to help emphasize the safety element of bicycle riding. Riders are encouraged to call the Nebraska Extension Office in Burt County at 402-374-2929 by noon the day of the contest so we know how many plan to attend.

Rocket Launch Results

The Burt County 4-H Rocket Launch was held both Tuesday and Thursday evenings, July 14 & 16 at Rogers Sod Farm south of Decatur. Because I printed both dates in previous newsletters, and our judge, George Weiland only lived a short distance away and was available, we decided to offer it both nights. It may have been a good decision as we had eleven young rocketeers participate!

We had varying degrees of success from perfect launches, to an aerobic jog retrieving a rocket, to an arced launch that ended up looking like a lawn dart toss as it plunged into the sod, then “burped” as the parachute recovery system activated. The

4-H rocket launch contest is never boring!

Champion and Reserve Champion ribbons will be awarded during the awards presentation after the fashion show, Friday, August 7th. Results of the contest are as follows:

Brent Miller, Lyons                      Purple – Champion

Brayden Anderson, Lyons            Purple – Reserve Champion

Caleb Schlichting, Lyons              Purple

Michael Bracht, West Point          Purple

Colten Miller, Lyons                     Blue

Elise Anderson, Lyons                 Blue

Andrew Schlichting, Lyons           Blue

Layne Miller, Lyons                     Blue

Clover Kids:

Linden Anderson, Lyons              Clover Kid

Eli Schlichting, Lyons                   Clover Kid

Gavin Johnson, Oakland              Clover Kid

Fremont 4-H Fair, 4-H Pie Day 1 and More

Fremont 4-H Fair

It was a busy week last week for many of our county 4-H members as they took part in the Fremont 4-H Fair held at Christensen Field in Fremont. Results of all their activities can be found in a separate article. Details on the results of the static exhibits will be shared next week.

However, I do want to congratulate Brent Miller of Lyons on being crowned King of the Fremont 4-H Fair. This honor comes after a long, varied and successful 4-H career and he is very deserving.

The Burt County Fair is coming right up August 7-11, but we’ve got some pre-fair activities to tend to before then.

4-H Pie Day I

The first 4-H pie making day will be held this Thursday, July 16 in Tekamah in the Methodist Church basement beginning at 8:00 a.m. All help is appreciated to make short work of assembling these homemade pies. If you don’t know HOW to make a pie, this is a GREAT place to learn! You don’t have to be a 4-H family to help out, all help is appreciated, so stop by to help out.

4-H Rocket Launch

The 4-H Rocket Launch is set for 6:30 p.m. this Thursday, July 16th at Roger’s Sod Farm just south of Decatur. This is a fun evening of excitement and comradery as everyone wants everyone else to have a successful launch and do what they can to make that happen. 4-H members planning to participate are encouraged to call the Extension office at 402-374-2929 by noon the day of the contest to pre-enter. Spectators are always welcome, just bring a lawn chair.

Clothing and Fashion Show Pre-entries:

All Burt County clothing and fashion show entries are due Monday, July 20th so please get them in the Extension Office so the modeling schedule can be made up and sent out.

Ice Cream Buckets & Sweet Corn Requests:

We are asking all our faithful supporters to donate Ice Cream Buckets with Lids for 4-H Kitchen. The 4-H Kitchen needs of ice cream buckets to store left overs, chopped veggies, etc. during the fair. If you have more buckets (with lids) than you need, please bring them to the Burt County Extension Office and we’ll be happy to get them to the fairgrounds in time for the fair.

We are also looking for donations of sweet corn on Thursday evening or Friday of the fair as a new veggie offered for one day only. If you have extra sweet corn on August 6 or 7th we’d appreciate any donations and we’re always looking for cucumbers, so please keep the 4-H Kitchen in mind! Thank you!

4-H Rocket Launch

If you’ve ever attended a 4-H Rocket Launch Contest, you probably never experienced a perfect night for it like it was Wednesday, July 16. Calm, comfortably cool and partly cloudy a perfect evening for a rocket launch. And perfect it was. Every 4-H member had their rocket take off on the first attempt! No second or third launch attempts and the stress that goes with them.  Of course the ribbon placing’s also put them in the perfect category and the judges, Dorothy and Caleb Schmidt had to be very picky to select the top two for Champion and Reserve Champion.
