There will be no open house for the Artist of the Month in December at the Swedish Heritage Center, 301 N Charde Ave in Oakland. However, there will be other activities through the holiday season.

Judith Shinkle is the featured Artist of the Month for October. Judy taught piano for nearly 50 years. In the meantime, she started to paint and later was a founding member of the PASSAGEWAY GALLERY. Besides painting in oils, she travels and volunteers.
Her painting, “Piano Bouquet” was featured on the cover of “Clavier” magazine. Come see her works of art at the Swedish Heritage Center, 301 N Charde Ave in Oakland, October 4, 2015, 11:00-1:00p.m. An Italian flair meal will be available. For more information, contact Julie Johnson at 402-685-5652.

The featured Artist of the Month for August is Natalie Dixon, a senior at Oakland-Craig high school.

The featured Artist of the Month for July is Roger Maller. Roger is a well known artist whose work is part of collections throughout the United States and many foreign countries. One of his painted eggs was chosen to represent the State of Nebraska at the White House and is now part of the Presidential private collection. Roger’s award-winning paintings will be on display and for sale.

The artist of the month of June is Dona Jean Nelson from Oakland. She is pictured here at the Swedish Heritage Center. A brunch will be held on Sunday, June 7th in her honor from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Dona will be present at this time.
Chicken salad, fresh fruit salad, croissant rolls and strawberry topped angel will be served to those attending the open house for Dona. A free will donation will be taken for the meal.
Come enjoy the festivities with good food and good company.

“I am happy to be the first artist to have a show at the Swedish Heritage Center,” stated Jan Cline-Zimmerman.
An open house will be held this Sunday from 11:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. honoring Jan and her artwork. “The paintings on display will be Nebraska landscapes in pastel,” Jan said. The event is sponsored by Nebraska Loess Hills RC&D.
Jan began pastel and landscape paintings after her family moved to Nebraska in 1998. One of her paintings, titled Abandon, was drawn from a 3×5 picture she took of a house while living in Verdigre Nebraska. “The picture was before digital photography, so it was much smaller to draw from,” Jan stated.
The Logan Valley Artists, which Jan is a member of, held a competition recently in which one of Jan’s paintings earned Best of Show. “Best of Show and first place entries go to the state show which will be held in Columbus in June,” Jan said.
Jan can also make prints of a painting or produce the painting on canvas or have it photographically reproduced in many shapes, sizes and styles.
She also owns a business in Oakland, Creative Connections, which has been on Oakland’s Main Street for eight years. She teaches music and art classes, sharing her joy and passion with many others in the area. “I am also currently working on an album,” Jan stated. Her album will focus on her spirituality, sharing songs she has written on scripture. She has also performed in the group, Troubadour, entertaining at many area local events.
Dala horse and T-shirt painting classes are being planned over the summer as well as a jewelry making class.
Jan’s shop features many handmade jewelry items made from beads, seeds and stones of all shapes, sizes and colors. “I appreciate the dedication these individuals have to their craft. What they make is unique and beautiful,” Jan said.
Everyone is invited to attend the open house in Jan’s honor Sunday at the Swedish Heritage Center. There is also a free will donation meal being served from 11:00-1:00 p.m.

The Nebraska Loess Hills RC&D Council has adopted the Traditional Corn Project as a new project and has brought back the Artist of the Month project.
The Culture Center students, in Macy, are learning to grow and process their sacred white corn in the traditional manner. In the fall, after the corn is harvested, a demonstration will be given to the RC&D Council.
After a hiatus, the Artist of the Month project has been resurrected. The Swedish Heritage Center in Oakland will take the lead scheduling the artists, writing news articles, and working with the artists. The Artist of the Month for May is Jan Cline-Zimmerman of Craig. Jan is a person of many talents. In addition to painting, she’s a song writer and is a member of the Troubadours, a popular music group that does Celtic and other genre of tunes. Jan’s award- winning paintings, done in several mediums, will be on display and for sale. The open house will be May 3, 2015, 11:00-3:00 at the Swedish Heritage Center, 301 N Charde Ave in Oakland. The RC&D has applied for funding for HHW collections in the fall of 2015. Information will be in future Little News.
