It is time for the annual county reunion, better known as the Burt County Fair. The fun begins on Fri., Aug. 1st through Tues., Aug. 5th.
There are many animal shows throughout the fair. The 4-H’ers have been working hard in preparation of the fair to show their animals. There will be a dog show, cattle and hog show and a sheep show, to name a few. Those not in 4-H can bring rabbits, ducks, geese, etc. to display and be judged also.
One of the newer events has turned into quite a hit at the fair. “Bull riding will be on Sunday night again this year. It has been drawing a huge crowd each year, and will sure to be the same this year,” stated David Pearson, member of the Burt County Fair Board.
The price to attend the bull riding event is the same as last year: $10 for adults, ten years of age and under are admitted for free. “Last year there were 350 kids that got in free,” Pearson said.
The parade is also a big hit during the parade. Many entries from throughout the county and beyond participate in the fair parade each year. The parade begins at 4:00 p.m. on Sun., Aug. 3rd. It begins at Holmquist Lumber in Oakland, heading west, walking by the fairgrounds and ending in the Oakland Park.
There will also be a beer garden, what is called left field, this year. “There have been some additional drinking selections added to the list this year,” Pearson stated.
There will also be a one-man band on Tuesday evening. “Shawn Cole will be providing some great entertainment for the crowd,” Pearson said.
A complete listing of events is listed below on both poster displays. “This will be another great Burt County Fair! Come and have a great time,” Pearson stated.

Static Exhibit Pre-entry deadline for County Fair
If you haven’t turned in your list of exhibits for the 4-H Building at the fair as well as rabbits, poultry and companion animal entries, please due NOW! They are due Monday, July 21 and Sharon needs time to enter each one of them in the computer so an entry tag is ready when you bring your exhibits to the fair. If you have any questions please call the UNL Extension Office at 402-374-2929.
County Fair Club Livestock Entry Forms & Horse Entries Due July 25
Burt County Horse exhibitors need to have their county fair horse entries in the Extension Office by July 25. ALSO this is the deadline for all 4-H Livestock Clubs to submit their club entries. 4-H members MUST enter through their 4-H Club, so make sure you call your leader if they don’t have a meeting planned to collect this information. All livestock entry fees are also due at that time and one check from the club is preferred. Call 402-374-2929 if you have questions.
PIE DAY II – Saturday, July 26
96 apple, rhubarb and strawberry rhubarb pies were made at Pie Day I, but if you like cherry, peach or apricot pie or the frozen fruit cups, please plan to help at Pie Day II
on Saturday, July 26. Pie Day II will be held in Oakland at the Vet’s Building on Main Street starting at 8:00 a.m. Help of all ages including 4-H members, parents, grandparents, other relatives, friends and curious passer-bys are welcome to help. Whether you’ve ever made a pie or just like visiting with old friends or making new ones, this is the place to be.
“4-H Flashback at the Fair”
The Burt County 4-H Council is again challenging you to dig through your old photos to display in the 4-H Kitchen during the county fair. Last year the topic was you with your tractor…this year we’re calling it “4-H Flashback!” We want pictures of you, your 4-H Club and/or your family members as 4-H members.
It doesn’t just have to be Burt County 4-H either as many of us are transplants! Make a copy of the picture (5×7 or 8×10 are great to look at) label it with who, what, when and where the photo was taken and bring it to the fair, or to the Extension Office before the fair.
This fits well with the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Smith Lever Act which established Cooperative Extension across the nation. Be part of the “4-H Flashback” at the fair.

“I really want to express the foundations sincere appreciation for all those who attended and supported the event,” stated David Pearson, Burt County Fair Foundation President.
The 3rd annual Burt County Fair Kick-Off was held on Sat., Feb. 8th at the Tekamah auditorium. 380 people attended from all over Burt County. “The foundation loves the fair, and I can’t express the gratitude the foundation feels by having so many people help us,” Pearson said.
Each year, the event is held to raise money to make the annual Burt County Fair bigger and better. “This year we want to finish the pavilion we built last year. We need gutters and more concrete around the building,” Pearson stated. “We continue to staff and support the Kids Zone by the 4-H Kitchen, all the decorations, toys, trikes and wagons were paid for by the foundation. We support the free entertainment under the pavilion and moved the existing Kohlmeier Pavilion to the new location.”
The foundation also purchased four new bleachers for those attending to be able to watch all of the entertainment at the fair. “The money is also used to keep the price down for the Bull O Rama, and allow all kids under 10 in free,” Pearson said.
There are buildings in need of repair and the grandstand needs some work Pearson indicated. “We would like to find a working windmill to put on the fair grounds,” Pearson stated.
One of the many items auctioned at this year’s event were flags from each school district in the county. “Mick and Judy Anderson bought Tekamah-Herman’s flag, Tony and Nancy Bromm bought Oakland-Craig’s and Dale and Paula Miller bought Lyons-Decatur Northeast’s flag,” Pearson said.
There are many people involved in making this annual event a success. “We really appreciate the City of Tekamah, it’s council, and Mayor for allowing us to use the facility,” Pearson stated. “I also want to thank Ronnie’s Bar for serving refreshments, they did a great job. A big thanks goes to Donna Preston for serving the meal. There are not enough words to express how much we appreciate all the help. From the spouses , brothers and sisters of the foundation, to a group of young adults, to Ag Society members, and their spouses and the auctioneers. It was a great event.”
The foundation has enormous gratitude for all of those involved in helping them with the annual event. “We live in a county that has been blessed not to have to charge to come to the fair. When you really think about our fair, it is the one time a year the entire county comes to celebrate the achievements of it’s members, Everyone you talk to still has friends that they met at the Burt County Fair,” Pearson said.
Donations are still being accepted. Mail to: The Burt County Fair Foundation, 1675 CR K Oakland, NE 68045.

Approximately 375 people attended the third annual Burt County Fair Kick-Off in Tekamah last night. Here is the first of many pictures Kat Country Hub took at the event. Congratulations to all of the people that took time out of their busy lives to put on such a wonderful event to make the Burt County Fair bigger and better. Job well done!

Tonight is the 3rd annual Burt County Fair Kick-Off. The evening begins with social hour, followed by a delicious prime rib meal. After the meal, an auction takes place. There are many wonderful items to bid on throughout the evening. There is also a silent auction. The money goes to making the Burt County Fair bigger and better each and every year.
The band, Rough Cut, performs at 9:00. Tickets are necessary for the meal and auction. The public can come to the band for the minimal fee of $5. I have gone the past two times and will be in attendance tonight. It is always fun. It is a Burt County Reunion! People from every community in the county are there! I enjoy seeing people that I don’t see very often.
Some of them I only see at the fair! David Pearson is one of the many ringleaders of the event. All of those that have organized it in the past have done an amazing job. I am sure tonight will be even better! Stay tuned to Kat Country Hub for more pictures and information on tonight’s event.
