Robert Fendrick, 78, of Pender NE


Robert “Bob” James Fendrick, 78, of Pender, Nebraska passed away Thursday, August 27, 2015 at the Pender Community Hospital in Pender. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 31, 2015 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Pender; with Pastor Miles Ruch officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 30, 2015 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church with a prayer service starting at 6:00 p.m. Burial with military honors will be in Rosehill Cemetery in Pender. Memorials are suggested to the family for future designation. Arrangements are under the direction of Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home.

Bob was born April 14, 1937 to Anton and Wavia (Twyford) Fendrick in rural Thurston, NE. He attended Thurston High School and entered the United States Navy where he served in the Korean War. On January 3, 1960, he married Patricia Lou Kai at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Pender, NE.

Bob was a member of the Pender Volunteer Fire Department from October 1960 until June 1984 and Fire Chief from 1971 until 1975. He worked for the City of Pender for 48 years, was a member of the NPPD Board, MEAN Board, and was the Weather Reporter for Pender to the National Weather Service. In his free time, Bob loved to play cards, garden, fish and hunt. He was a great pool player and handy man. Most of all, Bob loved his family and watching his grandchildren’s sporting events.

Bob is survived by his wife Patricia of Pender, NE; daughters, Pamela (Mark) Buchholz of Omaha, NE, Rhonda (Rodney) Heise of Pender, NE; son, Kevin (Michelle) Fendrick of Pender; sisters, Betty Meister of Pierson, IA, Marlene Abendroth of Bancroft, NE; brothers, Harold (Darlene) of Eureka, CA, and Anton (Pamela) Fendrick, III of Tallahassee, FL, and eight grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Frank; sister, Twila; and parent-in-laws, Art and Florence Kai.

Erna Backowies, 97, of Pender NE


Erna Kaethe Frieda (Stock) Backowies, 97, of Pender, Nebraska passed away Friday, August 28, 2015 at Legacy Garden Living Center in Pender. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Pender; Pastor Miles Ruch will be officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Monday, August 31, 2015 at Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home in Pender with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be in St. Mark’s Lutheran Church Cemetery in rural Pender. Erna was born March 23, 1918 in Freiburg, Germany to Johannes and Sofie (Lorenz) Stock. She attended and graduated from high school in 1936, in Lahr, Germany. From 1941-1945 Erna was a teacher in the Landjahr, a youth camp for young girls. She worked with her parents in their drug store on Markt Plaz in Lahr. In 1958, Erna worked as a stewardess on a ship to come visit a friend in Nebraska. She them met Robert Backowies, and was engaged after 10 days. On August 7, 1958 they were married in the Burgheimer Kirche in Lahr, Germany. To this union the couple had one daughter. They farmed outside of Pender until Roberts’ death in 2002. Erna then moved to Pender and resided at the Town Centre apartments, and later Legacy Garden Living Center.

Erna was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church and the WELCA. She enjoyed traveling, reading, sewing and playing the piano. Erna spent a lot of time outside in her garden and with her cats. She enjoyed being a farm wife raising cattle, sheep, and chickens. At Legacy Garden she spent her time playing bingo, writing letters on her typewriter, and playing solitaire on her laptop.

Erna is survived by her daughter, Katie (Scott) Darling of Pender; grandson, Jonathan Darling of Pender; granddaughter, Candice Darling of Pender; niece, Theresa (Wolfgang) Mueller of Flensburg, Germany.

Erna is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Hans and Albert.

Bill Greve, of Wayne, Nebraska, formerly of Wakefield died on Thursday, August 27, 2015 at University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska.

Funeral services for Bill will be held on Monday, August 31, 2015 at 2:00 pm at Salem Lutheran Church in Wakefield with Pastor Bill Kober officiating. Kenneth Marinus Pedersen, Sr., 82, of Emerson, NE passed away Monday, August 17, 2015 at the Pender Community Hospital in Pender. Funeral services will be Friday, August 21, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Emerson; Pastor Miles Ruch will be officiating. Kenneth was born March 4, 1933 to Walter R. and Helga (Dyer) Pedersen in Homer, NE. He attended elementary in Homer and graduated from Emerson High School. On April 9, 1954 he enlisted into the U.S. Army in Omaha, NE and was involved with the Korean War. On April 24, 1957 Kenneth married Alice Lundgren in Luverne, MN. To this union the couple had five children.

Kenneth worked for the Nebraska Public Power District in the Purchasing Department and retired in 1996 after 29 years of service. He was an active member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church and served on the council and a member of the American Legion Post 60 in Emerson and was the past Adjutant and Treasurer for the post. He also served on the Emerson Tri-View Apartments board for several years. In his spare time he enjoyed playing cards and golfing with friends. Most of all, Kenneth loved spending time with his family especially his grandchildren.

Kenneth is survived by his wife, Alice Pedersen of Emerson; son, Kenneth Jr. (Traci) Pedersen of Grand Island, NE; daughters, Brenda (Keith) Bice of Columbus, NE, Julie (Dan) Nielsen of Hornick, IA, Rhonda (Tim) Schademann of Columbus, NE and Susan (Lowell) Jepsen of Columbus, NE; sisters, Joyce, (Lee) Eggleston of Marshalltown, IA, Elaine (Don) Steinman of Emerson, NE, and Beverly Dawdy of Sioux City, IA; sisters-in-law Jackie Pedersen of Grand Lake, CO, and Pam Pedersen of Grandby, CO; eighteen grandchildren, two step grandchilren and twelve great grandchildren.

Kenneth is preceded in death by his parents, sister, Eleanor (Louis) Gutzmann, brothers Harlan Pedersen and Richard Pedersen, brother-in-law Chuck Dawdy.

Irma was born August 6, 1923 to Julius and Edna (Gunsolly) Tiege. In 1947, she married Darroll Powley in Lincoln, NE. The couple had one son. Irma was a member of the United Church of Pender and was a founding member of Twin Creeks Golf Course in Pender. In her free time, Irma enjoyed golfing, crocheting, and league bowling.

Irma is survived by her son, Raymond R. Powley of Celina, Ohio, three grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, daughter-in-law, Patricia Powley, two sisters, and one brother.

Donald F. Potter, 83, of Pender, Nebraska passed away Thursday, August 13, 2015 at Legacy Garden Living Center in Pender, Nebraska. Funeral services will be Monday, August 17, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Church of Pender; Pastor Steven Breazier is officiating. Visitation will be Sunday, August 16, 2015 at the United Church of Pender from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Walthill, NE. Donald was born August, 30, 1931 to Wilmer and Louisa (Novak) Potter near Pender, NE. He received his high school diploma while serving in the Army in Germany. On November 22, 1952, Donald married Glenda Nelsen in Winnebago, NE. The couple had three children.

Donald worked on the family farm until he retired. Donald was an amateur inventor and also enjoyed taking on projects, many with carpentry and electrical work. In his free time, he attended music festivals, played pool, and took pictures which were made into videos. Donald adored cherry pie and chocolate. Donald loved to tease people and spend time with his family.

He is survived by his wife; Glenda of Pender, NE, son; Ray (Pam) Potter of Thurston, NE, daughters; Julie Dunn of Omaha, NE, Wanda (Donovan) Kleinschmit of Crofton, NE, sister; Della Mahon of Sioux City, IA, five grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.
